Introduction

There is no theme. Every participant brings one or two bottles fully blind. The wines are split up in whites, reds and sweet wines (if those are brought). No other information. The idea is to go from light bodied and/or old to full bodied and/or young. So randomly someone tells he/she wants to start with the first wine. Then the rest follows when he/she thinks it is a proper moment to pour a wine you brought. And surprisingly enough this system works quite well in most cases. There are no flights. We taste the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (21 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Françoise Bedel Champagne Dis, "Vin Secret" Extra Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Some yeast in the bouquet. On the palate chalky minerals, mild acidity and not really bone dry. Clean wine.
White
2012 St. Jodern Kellerei Heida Barrique Switzerland, Valais, Visperterminen
90 points
Most high altitude vineyards in Europe I am told. In the bouquet yellow and white fruits. Same on the palate with a good concentration and not so very much acidity. A touch of sweetness and a slight touch of pleasant oak. Beautiful and clean wine.
White
2007 Strappelli Nubile Colli Aprutini IGT Italy, Abruzzi, Colli Aprutini IGT
90 points
The bouquet is not very expressive and has some nutty flavors. On the palate a firm and special wine with impressions of honey, almonds, some sweetness and a firm amount of alcohol, also in the taste. This is a late harvest Pecorino.

1996 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
In the bouquet mainly ripe red berry fruits and cherries. On the palate the same, beautiful oak, ok acidity, still slightly sticky tannin and pleasant bitterness in the finish. Elegant style. Ready now and the next few years. 89 – 90
Red
2004 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
In the bouquet ripe red berry fruits and some vanilla from the oak. Same on the palate, a touch of sweetness and ok acidity. Soft tannin. Nicely balanced, elegant and fresh. Ready now and no real hurry.

The bouquet is still a bit locked. On the palate a slightly sweet start with ripe red fruits and cassis, some earthiness and beautiful oak. A really pleasant wine, ready now and the next few years. Give it some air before drinking.

2003 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Grandi Annate Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Not so many notes; very ripe fruits, a lot of sweetness, some acidity and slightly drying tannin. Ok wine, but did not really impress.

2003 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
90 points
This bottle showed a bit different than the previous one (see my note written in 2013). The bouquet showed ripe fruits and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate ripe red, sweet fruits, some chocolate, some sweetness, soft acidity and tannin. Very tasty and completely ready, but no real hurry. This was a completely blind note. After revealing the sweetness of the hot 2003 vintage was clear.
Red
1998 Braida (Giacomo Bologna) Barbera d'Asti Bricco dell'Uccellone Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti
In the bouquet quite reductive with tea and celery. On the palate chocolate, some sweetness and some juicy acidity. Overall the wine is very mature and I don’t score it.
Red
2001 Schiavenza Barolo Vigneto Broglio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Beautiful bouquet with earth and autumn impressions. On the palate beautiful fruits, some chocolate, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and overall a delicious wine in its young maturity stage. Will be a pleasure between now and 2020+.

1994 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
flawed
Red and dark fruits as well as some barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate slightly corked, but the structure of the wine is certainly ok with a good balance between acidity and sweetness and evident oaky flavors.

2000 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Lush bouquet with ripe fruits, some spiciness and bell pepper and at first some barnyard impressions which bow off. On the palate a slightly sweet start, ripe fruits, some chocolate, a firm dose of good oak and slightly sticky tannin which is a bit drying. Puberty stage now. Will improve with a few more years of ageing. Would like to taste again between 2020 and 2022 to see if it has real ageing potential. (until 2100 as it is in CT now seems just a bit optimistic ;-))

Beautiful and creamy bouquet with good cassis, cedar and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate a beautifully concentrated wine with good cassis, a beautiful balance between acidity, sweetness and bitterness. Young maturity stage now and really delicious. Will definitely be a great pleasure to drink until 2018 - 2020 and possibly even a bit later.

Beautiful bouquet with luxurious oak and cedar beside the black berry fruits. On the palate a lot of dark berries, chocolate, very rich, a good balance between acidity and sweetness. Beautifully round tannin, some sweetness and still youthful. Very beautiful wine.

Beautiful bouquet with good ripe fruits and pleasant oak. On the palate a concentrated, very clean wine with good dark forest fruits, a beautiful balance between firm sweetness and acidity and beautifully round and soft tannin. Very modern made, but a really nice wine in maturity stage now and it will stay on this level until at least 2018.

Served completely blind and although this wine came to mind, I did not say it out loud, so that doesn’t count ;-). In the bouquet dark forest fruits and a firm dose of luxurious oak. Same on the palate. Some sweetness, good acidity and tannin. The oak is starting to integrate and this is a great and still powerful wine.

Beautiful bouquet with red and dark berries and some pleasant oak. On the palate red berries, chocolate, a touch of sweetness and mild tannin. Well balanced wine and drinking beautifully now. No hurry.

2001 Cims de Porrera Priorat Classic Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Beautifully mature bouquet with chocolate and ripe dark and red forest fruits, some herbs and spices and just a light pleasant dose of oak. On the palate dark berry fruits and chocolate again. A beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness, silky soft tannin and beautifully integrated oak. It was good I brought my last bottle to the tasting of tonight because the wine is at its ultimate peak, but it is a pity I don’t have another six bottles to drink one every month until May 2015.

Very ripe fruits in the bouquet. On the palate very ripe fruits, slightly oxidized flavors, soft acidity and tannin. Chocolate. Lush wine. Some of the participants thought this wine is too old, but I thought it is completely ready now and still a great pleasure.
