91 Points

Friday, July 27, 2018 - IPNC Weekend 2018; 7/26/2018-8/2/2018 (Linfield College, McMinnville, OR): Small glass over 30 minutes. Never had this cuvee before. Silky, great feel, spices, verve, a bit bigger in density, vanilla, dark fruits.

11/3/2018 12:33:00 PM - Thanks for the review. What was the reason for thenlower score vs what seemed like a really good review? Preference, needs more time? Thanks for your help.

11/3/2018 1:02:00 PM - Thanks for the question. For me, 91 reflects an awfully good wine - one that generally I would be quite happy to own and drink (relative to the price point of course in terms of overall value). I try to put the wine into as much perspective as I can based on many other wines in comparison. There is always that risk that a score doesn't truly reflect the character of the wine, but I try to give a snapshot of where it is at that moment, at least for me. I do feel like this is a little on the younger side and not as giving on the nose yet. I could see this being better in a couple years, although it may just be a more mature version of its current self. That would not be bad either. I very much like Bethel Heights as a producer too. Cheers!, Kevin

11/3/2018 1:19:00 PM - Thanks Kevin- the context is extremely helpful. I tend to put 90 as enjoyable but not exciting for me, and one I would not recommend or buy again- only because there are so many at a similar price point or so little time and too many wines to try.

My break of amazing is 95- very hard to achieve and a marvel to behold.

Thanks for your reviews and help. Ryan

11/3/2018 3:09:00 PM - It always helps to have that perspective. In my mind, 90 points is a benchmark and must be earned. It needs to meet the threshold of pleasure, complexity, and deliver an experience worthy of my attention. I should want to drink that wine again. I agree that at 95 points, it has to be extremely memorable, a classic wine. The system is flawed, but it helps to follow people and understand their palate, what they drink, and their experiences.
