2006 Château Pontet-Canet

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

92 Points

Sunday, August 13, 2023 - (Opened on my son's 10th bday.) Despite decanting for 5 hours, it was still fairly primary in its high acidity, strong tannins, and plenty of somewhat integrated wood. Years away from its peak.

8/21/2023 1:30:00 PM - These have been slow to come around, so I've been holding my 2 bottles. The last time I had an '06 was in '17 and from a 6L it had a rather short ending. I wondered at the time if the 750s would age and drop off more quickly but so far that does not appear to be the case?

8/21/2023 5:35:00 PM - These 06’s seem very slow to come around - do you feel there’s enough stuffing there to outlast the time it will take for them to open up?

8/21/2023 6:15:00 PM - @ Hendmo: Good question! I think there is plenty of acidity and tannins to last for years to come (given that it's 17 years out already). What I am less certain about is how much complexity and tertiary notes this will yield in 10+ years, i.e., it has to be more than currently, but what exactly is to be seen! I just wished I had multiple lives to experience these evolutions LOL

8/21/2023 7:13:00 PM - Slaz, I have doubts with either issue, decant now or wait 10 years?

8/21/2023 7:15:00 PM - Hendmo....the '05s and '06s seem slow to come around. Clearly, the '06 was not like '05 in Bdx. Yet, I gotta believe they will both yield good wines. The question is, at what time?

8/22/2023 4:55:00 AM - I have the same situation as Mark. I have been tracking this wine for a while, as a 17 year old BDX should be approaching its drinking window. But the notes on this wine are consistent that it is still young and tannic. Like Mark, I have two bottles and am hesitant to open one in the name of science. While I am confident that the 2005s have the fruit and stuffing to hold up to more age, I am not as confident in the 06's.....

8/22/2023 7:13:00 AM - jjlgd......I suspect it all has to do with expectations with this one. Mine are tempered a bit as I fully realize it isn't a banner year for Bdx, just pretty solid. I'm realistically hoping for a 93? I will probably open one of my 2 bottles soon, over the next few weeks and see how it does with a healthy amount of air. On weekends I'll open a Bdx at noon and follow it all afternoon, then proceed with dinner as I see it rounding into form. Sometimes we eat at 4, sometimes at 7pm. If it ends up being a 92, I won't be disappointed in the least. If it ends up being a 94 with dinner, I'll be pretty happy. Based on the results, I'll figure out what to do with the other bottle, I guess.
