90 Points

Sunday, January 9, 2011 - Sunday Funday #Syrahvaganza (D-Rod's): Decanted short time. Golden color with a fair amount of crystallized sediment. Gorgeous nose of honey, spice and candied peaches with a little botrytis character coming through. Much drier than anticipated based on the nose, with classic Gewurz character. "Varietally correct" and complex with stone fruits and white pepper spice persistent from beginning to end. There's a little bit of heat that creeps in at the end (served at room temp) but a very good wine nonetheless.

1/11/2011 5:36:00 PM - I'm curious about the crystallized sediment. At what temperature did you store this wine? I've noticed a crystalline sediment in some sauternes-like dessert wines I've had, but not if they are stored strictly at cellar temperature. They need to get much colder - without experimental controls, perhaps 40 degrees or so - to throw the sediment. Once thrown, though, the sediment remains. Perhaps the wine was shipped in winter? For my dessert wines, in addition to making the very last bit of the bottle unconsumable, it does also seem to have a VERY minor negative effect on the depth of the aromas and flavors. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on an unsedimented bottle.
