Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - Opened one hour ahead of time. Faint leather, cassis, cedar notes in the aroma. Licorice and black pepper on the palate, with berries, licorice and a fair amount of heat on the finish. Firm backbone, but the balance is a little out of whack. Too much heat, and what I assume is the oak is not well integrated. Lacks the class, style and flavor profile of a good Rioja, but is much better than some of the ungainly specimens coming out of the region these days.
Also, not a great value at $22. Better to trade up a couple of bucks for Lopez de Heredia Cubillo.
