20 years old and still showing it's glory! Leather, wood, dried cherry and red fruits, balsamic flavor, acidity still alive with soft, nearly velvet-like tannins. Having it with overn-roasted lamb in herbs in a little bit. Excited!

Showing it's age with some bricking near the edge of the glass. Dust on the nose. Plenty of fruit, though especially plum and tobacco. Balanced 14% abv with subtle oak. Decanted with less sediment than expected. Had with a variety of Spanish tapas prepared by Chef Robbie Meltzer at Jaleo - Bethesda, MD

Good structure and length. Love the pure sweet cherry, pipe cleaner, leather and vanillan notes on the nose. Tannin are well integrated now but this can still go a few years. 5-10 i suppose. Nice acidity on the back end holding it all together. Tobacco on the finish. Nice wine that can still age conciderably.

The oak is ever-present but not so overpowering as to distract and further, works to make the stunning aromatics that much more compelling. A nice (though not stellar) example of an old world Rioja/Tempranillo, with muted, dusty fruit and although devoid of any notable acidity, has ample tannins remaining; of the round and smooth variety. Might have made a good candidate for an "old bones" tasting. Not yet fortunate enough to have tasted it, I can only imagine that this is made in a style more similar to Muga's benchmark Prado Enea.

This is a magnificent wine. Nothing has changed and I think the bottles are at their peak as they open during 2-3 hours of air. However this wine will last a few more years. I've had it with chicken, pasta, lamb, chocolate (right now it's incredible with dark and almonds). It's been to parties and dinners and everyone is impressed. So am I, especially for $22 or so.

Fully developed, oxidative nose -- toasted coconut and a bit of sandalwood over sour & morello cherry sauce aromatics. Replays on the palate, with terroir (sandalwood, cedar) and oak (coconut) coming through. Softish tannins and largely dried fruit character. Overall, tastes fully developed; suggest now to 2014, for peak enjoyment.

Nose of anise, jammy blueberries, and cinnamon. Blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of bacon on the palate. Additional berries carry through to the finish, along with graphite and clove. Chewy tannins. Medium bodied, with nice acidity. It did fade about an hour into drinking, so it might be a little past its prime. Drink now if you have any left.

Ready to drink as soon as the cork came out, but did improve over several hours. Still has gobs of bright fruit, with some berry notes complimenting the dark cherry flavors. Oak profile is prominent but still well integrated. A fantastic Gran Reserva.

Lovely, classic Rioja scents on the nose, with a distinctive orange peel note and deep earthy aromas undergirding the fruit. On the palate, it's very light on its feet, with subdued oak and fresh, food-friendly acidity. Went great with oxtail salad and shortribs.

I had high expectations after discussing with GregT, and the bottle seemed a little thin when I opened it, but it just blossomed over the evening. A little aggressive with the oak, I think, but the grapes could carry it and it never overwhelmed the brightness of the tempranillo. No oak would have left it a little sharp, I think, although the acid was not the first feature. We both could not stop refilling the glasses and the bottle emptied in no time. The bottle showed why buying Spanish Gran Riserva is a bargain: Great flavors, ready to drink, they cellar it for you. Oh, yeah, it's a little raisiny, but that seeming sweetness balances the bright acids of tempranillo.

Brought to Alegrias, pop and poured into a decanter. A bit tight as expected from a Gran Riserva but not undrinkable, however last glass was the best. Notes of dried red fruit, soy, with hints of wet earth and saline. Was a bit more fruit forward than expected but still had enough old world nuances to make it interesting. Palate had loads of red fruit, cherry, strawberry and cranberry coupled with some funky sauvage.

Still deep in colour for an eleven year old. Nose of strawberry, vanilla, tar. Flavours follow through with the nose. Medium acidity and soft, unobtrusive tannins. Finishes medium. A very nice wine, but had high expectations because I've really enjoyed Beronia's reservas. Could use some more time on its side for some complexity.
Popped and poured, probably should have decanted this for it to open up, but was sharing over dinner.

Intense vanilla, oak, black cherry noe. The sominess an drich fruit deliver on the palate. A hefty Rioja with clasic flavors in a farly modern, concentrated style. Will drink well for years to come.

To fully appreciate this wine, it needs an hour to 90 minutes in the decanter. Dark garnet in color with a nice sheen (not a trace of cloudiness),subdued nose, it opens into a very elegant palate of cherry/raspberry fruit. Not the longest or deepest wine out there, but as a complement to a nice meal, a steal at $20USD.

Opened one hour ahead of time. Faint leather, cassis, cedar notes in the aroma. Licorice and black pepper on the palate, with berries, licorice and a fair amount of heat on the finish. Firm backbone, but the balance is a little out of whack. Too much heat, and what I assume is the oak is not well integrated. Lacks the class, style and flavor profile of a good Rioja, but is much better than some of the ungainly specimens coming out of the region these days.
Also, not a great value at $22. Better to trade up a couple of bucks for Lopez de Heredia Cubillo.

Popped and poured - no sediment, quite clear, still red. Powerful nose, with lots of black fruit, sweet oak and a bit of earthy funk. On the palate, ripe but not heavy, fruit-forward, very integrated and balanced. The oak is there, but is sweet and creamy. Maybe a little on the simple side, but a high delicious factor. Medium-light structure. Ready to drink, might improve a little bit over the next few years. Definitely more in the modern style than the 1996, with a tiny bit of heat on the backend, but still quite good and a bargain at $20.

Maybe it's because the wine was served in little claret goblets, but we could not denote an easily discernable nose on this wine, so judgement on the nose is reserved for a future tasting. I thoroughly enjoyed the developed rioja flavours which remained dominant in the mouth for a good length of time - I figure this is due to its age. This wine can stand up to food like seasoned roast beef, but I would still keep the food a bit toned down, just to allow for a full enjoyment of the wine. So, hold the seasoning. This wine is definitely worth the price and is good to drink now.

nose: well balanced and elegant nose of dried roses, dark red cherries, oak tones, vanilla, leather tones, smoke and a touch of tobacco
taste: medium bodied with good supporting tannins as well as medium+ acidity with elegant tones of oak, vanilla, dark red cherries and some bits of tobacco and leather
overall: Still showing a bit of youth with good acidity and tannins. The flavors are very well balanced with good weight on the palate as well. This has a nice dark red color to it and the nose has really come alive with about a 90 minute decant.

Cherry, smoke, tobacco, and leather on the nose. There's a good dose of acidity here, which I like, and a lingering earthy finish. The fruit does have a presence, but not in a way that obscures the wine's Rioja characteristics or makes the wine too heavy. For $20, a complex and satisfying wine.

Decanter for 1-2 hours. Very nice fruit and acidity. Moderately long finish. Very nice mid palate. Began to lose some steam approximately four hours after opening.

RUSSK Nice full Rioja nose: leather; oak; tobacco. Some smoke too. Med-Full bodied with very lively acidity (almost too much) and fruit. Ribera-like in this regard. Smooth tanins with a little bit of grip. Long finish. A lot going on. Doesn't all come together perfectly, but very nice and satisfying for $22. Would buy more. 90 -91pts.

Slightly darker than the Bosconia GR. Bit of muddy earth on nose. Combination oak and smells that way. Round and smooth, not hugely deep. Lecturer extolled 01 as an excellent vintage. Forgot to score it at the time; from memory, 91ish?
