94 Points

Sunday, April 6, 2014 - [43%, matured 14yrs in American White Oak + 4yrs in Matusalem Oloroso Sherry Casks; L'1E2 11/06/13 23:49 13/01655 ] Rich bronze amber in glass, with a curious fishy funk, followed by soft apple wood, wet gravel, biscuit, almonds, cocoa dusting, soft blue smoke and orange oil. Suitably oily and viscous on the palate, with more orange peel, cinnamon and toasted almond. A good noticeable burn/edge, revealing toasted cereal, black pepper and oak on the finish, late stone-fruits, and some vanilla/coconut shavings. Watering reveals some orange blossoms, seaspray, green wood, and the obvious disappearance of said fishy funk (thankful!), while palate now noticeably lighter, gentler, even enjoyable, revealing a lacy texture, light tingling, soft christmas spices, red apple skin, dark cocoa, ground ginger, and even hints of a lingering sweetness. Suitably complex, best enoyed w a nibble of dark choc. Well made but the ostentatious bottling and price tag deserves deducting a point or two!
