Friday, May 8, 2015 - The wine is popped and aired for 3 hours, as the initial whiff yields a very closed and one-dimensional nose. The wine pours a golden straw color with long legs. As the wine warms up, the concentration of the bouquet starts picking up, giving off a melange of marzipan, orange blossoms, coconut oil, toasty oak and caramel. On the palate, the alcohol definitely flexes its strength with the high ABV content. Nevertheless, the wine is voluptuous without any harsh edges - quite a well-rounded experience with a mineral backbone to support the flavors of more oak, pot de creme, roasted pineapples, spice (star anise and cinnamon?) and sugarcane. Acidity is very minimal here, but the finish is quite long nonetheless. Three hours after the wine is in the glass, it is still evolving with more tertiary notes of hay and mint coming out. Fabulous experience - bargain wine indeed.
