oLast bottle. Muted golden yellow. The nose again leans towards the yellower fruits peach, ripe pear ad ripe pineapple - with a leesy smoke tinged note. Again, ripe and rich on the palate with fleshy fruit- bitter pear, ginger and lots of butter. Ample and persistent. Again doing well with age. I am going to keep buying Hansel. All I have now is 2015. The soring prices of Burgundy make this even more pleasent.

This was fantastic. In an absolutely perfect place. The balance it struck in the body, aromas and flavor (WITH the presence of the oak which is a significant challenge on my palate) probably could not have been better. Really can't say anything bad about this wine. It was my last bottle and I would wait a day to drink others if I had them.

Really firing on all cylinders. Beautiful and bold in its golden color, it looked like a kind of homage to summer light. There was a viscosity to it that did not result in a syrupy taste. On the palate, it was just rich and fulfilling with honeysuckle and lemon zest. Wish I had more—the acidity in the glass tells me that there are several years of evolution left with this.

Pale yellow to green in the glass. Nose of straw, honeysuckle, faint peat smokiness. Rapturous on the palate. Expands in the mouth with wet stone, black pepper, butter and creamy lemon drops. A mature Chardonnay. I am not sure it gets better from here with more age. I plan to finish mine up by the end of the holidays.

Greenish yellow in color. Initially a little woodsy on the palate, but that sense diminished rather quickly. Mineral tones predominant over fruit but the warmer it got the smoother it tasted. It may be nearing the end of its window.

More than 4 years since I have cracked a bottle of this. Now a more muted golden yellow. The nose again leans towards the yellower fruits peach, ripe pear ad ripe pineapple - with a very leesy smoke tinged note. Again, ripe and opulent on the palate with fleshy rich fruit- bitter pear, ginger and iodine with lots of butter. Ample and persistent. Doesn't get to what I love in great white Burgundy but I really like it for what it is. And it is doing very well with age. I am going to keep buying Hansel.

Consistent with prior notes — rich and chewy with lots of honeysuckle. Mineral notes are much less pronounced in this bottle. Easily will make it to 2020. 92 / 93.

Aromas of hazelnut, marshmallow, lemon meringue and pineapple. Flavors of hazelnut, lemon meringue, papaya and mango. Lot of wood and tropical fruit on this. Ends with a 25+ second finish with nut notes. Liked previous bottles of this a bit better.

Wow this wine is drinking at peak. Just delicious CA Chardonnay. Hansel is probably my favorite CA producer of Chardonnay and Pinot at fair prices. Amazing wines year in and year out. I have one of these left that I will hold for a few years to check additional development.

Tropical fruit, honeysuckle and vanilla hold hands here like a Meursault premier cru. The smokiness that was there the last time I visited this wine has dissipated. Great weight, structure and length. It is hard to beat Hansel's wines for the money.

I opened this along with the 2011 vintage to compare them. They were nearly identical in color (golden) and had very similar nose, but I found the aromatics stronger in the 2011 vintage. I think in a blind tasting of six or eight California chards, one could easily pick out these two as from the same producer/vineyard. The fruit notes reflected pear and tart apple and some spices probably derived from the oak barrels. I gave the 2011 vintage one additional point over my rating of the 2012.

deep yellow in the glass with a very distinct flavor of ginger, I think. If not ginger then some similar herb. Not my favorite flavor to pick up in a wine. Otherwise, it was rich and buttery.

Served with sole/stuffed mushrooms braised in white wine w/ tarragon cream sauce. Deep yellow in glass. Rich immediate nose of aged citrus, caramel, subtle floral, pineapple, softer yellow fruit. Very rich in mouth with long finish of same. The subtle smokey quality others have noted is interesting tone too. Subdued acid, but balanced and not unctuous at all. Good companion for sole & sauce, but a bit less creme brulee might have been optimal. Wish I had more, alas, to try in a year or two.

I enjoyed this. Its color is a rich creamy yellow shading over to green and the taste is very buttery with hints of chamomile flowers. Worked wonderfully on two different nights - one with cod and the other with chicken. There is a nice richness to it that some may find overly oaky. I did not. A friend turned me on to Cuvee Alyce a few years back and it seems consistent vintage to vintage at a relatively reasonable price. Recommended. I do notice that my points rating has gone from 93 to 91. My explanation is that for me it is in that 91-93 range depending on my mood and also I have been drinking a lot more white Burgundy the last six months and I am becoming more partial to that style. This is still quite lovely.

Aromas of lemon oil, smoke, mineral and a hint of tropical fruit. This is a much bigger wine in the mouth, with flavored of vanilla, butterscotch, tropical fruit and smoke. This really needs some time to calm down to really reach it's potential but it is a wonderful wine. Needs at least 2-3 years.

The wine is popped and aired for 3 hours, as the initial whiff yields a very closed and one-dimensional nose. The wine pours a golden straw color with long legs. As the wine warms up, the concentration of the bouquet starts picking up, giving off a melange of marzipan, orange blossoms, coconut oil, toasty oak and caramel. On the palate, the alcohol definitely flexes its strength with the high ABV content. Nevertheless, the wine is voluptuous without any harsh edges - quite a well-rounded experience with a mineral backbone to support the flavors of more oak, pot de creme, roasted pineapples, spice (star anise and cinnamon?) and sugarcane. Acidity is very minimal here, but the finish is quite long nonetheless. Three hours after the wine is in the glass, it is still evolving with more tertiary notes of hay and mint coming out. Fabulous experience - bargain wine indeed.

Very hard to stay away from this fantastic wine. Right off there are aromas of a toasty butterfingered oak. This subsides to the same aromas and flavors of lemon, baked apple, mango, cigar box, nicely toasted oak and creamy butter. Exceptional balance. A nice structure too. Quite soft and drinkable now. Again, a long 30+ second finish. I should have purchased 2 cases.

Spectacular wine. I can't keep my hands off of it. Same as prior ea/valuation on 12/20/2014: "aromas of lemon, baked apple, mango, cigar box and nicely toasted oak (the most overwhelming part of the nose). Similar flavors with the addition of some buttery feeling. Big rich and very intense fruit. Nice structure and excellent balance. A long finish of 30+ seconds".
Well this is amazing Chardonnay. Has the smokey character on the nose and then an amazingly long finish. Funny, I agree with Parker. Pretty darn special Chardonnay.
Kitty notes much red berry fruit and canned strawberry. Needs some time to fully flesh I believe.

Big rich and very intense fruit. Nice structure and excellent balance. A long finish of 30+ seconds. Quite open and drinkable, given its youth. A tremendous wine. A good pairing with broiled salmon, but this is a wine that shows better by itself.

Drank with 2010 Rombauer chardonnay, at dinner at home. All four of us preferred Rombauer but also liked this wine. The color not as deep as Rombauer. Pronounced aromas of chardonnay fruit with minerals and much more subtle oak. Slightly fuller-bodied, but the fruit a bit more austere. Nice long aftertaste, moderate heat from the alcohol on the finish. Excellent wine, which should become more complex with a couple more years but is perfectly enjoyable now. Rombauer remains our gold standard chardonnay, though. Ric

First Walter Hansel chardonnay we've had. Excellent, medium-full body, fairly pronounced varietal aroma, with some complexity. Excellent, but we still prefer Rombauer, which is $28 compared with $42 for this. Ric

Tasty. Pear, apple. It has a mid weight pallet. Long finish. Great value.

Already a nice golden color. Aromas of lemon, baked apple, mango, cigar box and nicely toasted oak (the most overwhelming part of the nose). Similar flavors with the addition of some buttery feeling. Big rich and very intense fruit. Nice structure and excellent balance.

First Walter Hansel chardonnay we've had. Excellent, medium-full body, fairly pronounced varietal aroma, with some complexity. Excellent, but we still prefer Rombauer, which is $28 compared with $42 for this.
