Friday, December 20, 2019 - Querciabella has a good thing going, and have hit a sweet spot that is hard to find elsewhere. They are able to make a delicious Chianti Classico normale that drinks very well upon release but that will also age beautifully for ten years or so; that has classic Sangiovese structure, aromatics, body and tannins (that don't show up until two hours after opening, perfect timing so as not to be obtrusive at a typical restaurant meal) but that requires almost no decanting to enjoy; that appeals to New Worlders who like oak and immediacy but that also appeals to Old Worlders who favor aromatics, structure, sappy acidity and the complexity that gracious aging provides. Yes, that's what this wine has. Even if it is too expensive at $25 a bottle because we can find better classic Chianti Classico at half the price, or better New World Chianti Classico at 2/3 the price, we cannot find this unique combination at this price. If we can find it at all it is usually the purview of more expensive CCRs or Gran Selezione wines. Well done!
