A really nice chianti. Drinking well, still feels quite young without much age showing despite 9 years since vintage. Sweet and sour cherry fruit, a light touch of spice, a hint of winegums. Good acidity, ligt to medium structure, good lenght.

The nose is not too expressive at the moment, nevertheless it reveals red berries wrapped in vanilla, with a floral twist. On the palate, it is highly concentrated for a Chianti Classico, displaying a velvet texture. Not really my kind of Sangiovese (I prefer the tart, transparent wines made in a Burgundian style to the Bordelais take on the grape), but it is undeniably well made and very enjoyable. Anyway, it is very "international", sacrificing perhaps some character for polish. Drinks well now, will be better from 2025 and keep well until 2030.

Medium ruby w/garnet edges. Nose is of medium intensity with leather, mushroom soil, red cherry, vanilla, dried oregano, dried cherry, toast. On the palate the wine is dry with medium plus acidity, medium plus fine tannins, medium plus body, high alcohol and medium plus flavor intensity with flavors of leather, mushroom soil, red cherry, dried oregano, dried cherry, toast. Finish lingers w/red cherry, vanilla, dried herbs. Drinking wonderfully now although could still go some more years.

In a sweet spot currently: still loads of bright red fruit but with the first signs of maturity; tobacco, balsamic notes and a touch of leather. Well-dosed acidity and just perfectly balanced. Did not come across as overly modern and was gone in no time. Very nice!

IWS Tuscany, Campania, Basilicata, Marche, Umbria; 1/29/2022-1/30/2022 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of cedar, meaty, slightly sour cherry. With agitation the cedar oak note gains weight on the nose, cherry becomes less sour and is joined by some biscuit. Medium plus intensity acidity on the palate, juicy, fleshy, savoury cherry, fruit persists, tannins are present but in a support role, meaty notes join on the finish. Balanced. Nice

Medium ruby red in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, herbs & a hint of minerals. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, plums & strawberries with herbs & minerals. Lingering finish. Quite accessible at present with decanting & extended airing but even at 7 years of age, it has the structure & fruit to continue with further development with additional aging.

Tasted blind. This seems like a young wine with lots of unintegrated oak. The oak makes it hard to smell the varietal aromas, but I think this is nebbiolo due to the structure (gritty tannins yet light, juicy body) and the tarry aromas. Perhaps it is (presumed) varietal characteristics leading my tasting notes as opposed to the other way around, but I will add sweet roses too. One thing I’m certain of: this wine would benefit from more bottle aging. My guess is it is Barbaresco, about five years old. Rating: 90

Cork slightly stained about 1/3 inch up, so changed to NR. Tried to give it benefit of doubt but recent critiques appear on point, a bit too disjointed, awkward, and rough-hewn tannins make this come up short of expectations and feel very middle of the road. Drunk over 3 days with different levels of air, just never showed up to the party like a good sexy CC should.

Sweet vanilla and white flowers, candley spice (allspice or clove, having trouble pinning it down), red to purple berry fruit, this has M to M- tannin and M to M+ acid but also a soft and thin/watery body. I generally prefer lighter and higher acid reds but this comes off weak, not fresh, and while it isn’t woody per se the French oak character is just distracting more than integrated...and there isn’t a lot else going on. This isn’t terrible by any means but there’s a lot of good Chianti available in this price range; for like $15 I’d say sure it’s fine, for $28 this is pretty awful qpr. ~4.5-5/10

Good+. Nicely balanced, modernly styled wine that sees a combination of barrique (10% new) and tonneau. Med/Med+ body, very easy drinking with avg complexity and length. 100% Sangiovese; 14,0% abv. For fans of the style, it's easily recommended
Fresh and bright with high acidity, lovely spiciness and morello cherries. Light tannins and hints of clove. The oak that was a bit too obvious a cople of years ago has integrated well. Good stuff. Could perhaps wish for som extra ripeness to the cherries. Went very well with tagliatelle al pomodore e olive.

above average Chianti, let breath for a good hour to open it up, probably couldn't have benefited from another 2-3 years in the bottle but overall good mouthfeel and consistent notes for a Sangiovese. Had with spaghetti (lemon, caper, onion, tomato sauce) and crispy chicken livers reduced in a raisin/port sauce. Was able to hold up nicely to the flavors of the liver

NEEDS 2, maybe 3 yrs, then EASILY making its 10th. My VG+/EXC-, trending towards the higher (or even more?), but will need... TIME. 97 pts/Platinum @ Decanter’s ’18 World Wine Awards [+ 95 (Hulme) & 92 (Morris), both in 2/’18], 92 ea Vinous (Galloni, 1/18/18), WS (10/15/18), Suckling, & winealign.com (2/’18), and 90 WA (Larner, 10/31/17)! Querciabella has a good thing going, and have hit a sweet spot that is hard to find elsewhere. They are able to make a delicious Chianti Classico normale that drinks very well upon release but that will also age beautifully for ten years or so; that has classic Sangiovese structure, aromatics, body and tannins (that don't show up until two hours after opening, perfect timing so as not to be obtrusive at a typical restaurant meal) but that requires almost no decanting to enjoy; that appeals to New Worlders who like oak and immediacy but that also appeals to Old Worlders who favor aromatics, structure, sappy acidity and the complexity that gracious aging provides. Yes, that's what this wine has. Even if it is too expensive at $25 a bottle because we can find better classic Chianti Classico at half the price, or better New World Chianti Classico at 2/3 the price, we cannot find this unique combination at this price. If we can find it at all it is usually the purview of more expensive CCRs or Gran Selezione wines. Well done!

Australia day 2019 (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Rich, concentrated cherry, tobacco leaf, very slight cedar, smells 'dese'. And so it proves on the palate, juicy acidity married to drying, firm tannic grip are both the big bothers of the smaller and less impression making fruit. All travel long. Balanced in time I would suspect as it all settles. Lovely

Cumulative impressions from three bottles:
A: M+ garnet w/ elegant, gradual rim variation. Tearing is wide, thin, and fast-flowing.
N: High alcohol w/cherry. Nose is concealed but opens quickly w/ some oak/cedar, earth.
P: Medium body, M+ acid, firm tannin. Tart cherry and pepper and clove. Long finish w. tobacco and lingerning tannin.
Good wine, but maybe a little overblown at full price. Fine for about $20.

Better than I remember with good fruit, a bit darker than your standard chianti but not too much. Plenty of structure. Serious. Will inprove with cellaring.

Blackberry, black truffle, cremini mushroom, maraschino cherry, grass, bay leaf. Palate is silky & modern, dusty tannin, more mushroom, roasted espresso & dark chocolate.

Nice fruit and profile but a bit too much oak at this point. Needs time. Will be better in 5 years. Score is for now.
