Community Tasting Note

Friday, January 1, 2021 - A big and full bouquet of black fruits, tobacco, undergrowth, dark chocolate and smoked cedar. This needs at least 3 hours of decanting. The palate is still rather closed, a structured full-bodied mid-palate with velvety tannins to ensure longevity. Texture is rounded though. Compared to the best vintage, it lacks the ultimate complexity and depth. Transitions to finish is seamless and deep. Keep for another 3 years before opening one. 92-93 pts.

1/2/2021 2:14:00 PM - Thanks for your notes on this one. My last taste of it was 3 years ago and it was devoid of any finish. Sounds like it may be better now. Appreciate the decant info, too. Cheers, Mark

1/2/2021 5:45:00 PM - When first opened, all the elements were hiding behind the huge structure. Decanted for 2 hrs in a small decanter and then poured back into the bottle and drank slowly over 4 hours. The wine opens up more after an hour in the bottle and it was at its peak. By the 3rd hour in the bottle, the finish was fading quickly. My sense is that if we are going to drink it over a period of 3-4 hrs slowly, it is better not to decant at all, just drink from the bottle and let the decanting happens in the bottle. This would probably sustain the finish of the wine better.

1/3/2021 5:56:00 AM - I think your suggestion may be the way to go with this one. I usually have BDX only on the weekends so I can monitor the process over 3,4,5 hours til dinner. I only have a couple of these left and will try that approach the next time Thanks!
