Saturday, October 10, 2009 - Lovely, as usual. Plenty of berry, cherry and dark plum fruit, with impressive purity and clarity, underlined by terrific, bright acidity. There is an inner core that I can only describe as "sweet meat". Since my last bottle (in February, 09, when I hosted my monthly wine group with a Piedmont theme), this wine has condensed somewhat and is less lush. No degradation over three nights of being opened. Adding more and more of these to my cellar at $25 was a good move. Roberto Conterno makes the best Barbera I have tasted. ADDENDUM: I am sipping the last of this wine some five nights after it's been opened - - no degradation in terms of oxidation; only in texture, which seems soup-y. But the berry and plum palate still shows brightness and sweet fruit. Impressive fortitude here.
