Friday, June 4, 2010 - Golden straw colour. Nose of caramel, ripe bananas and Manuka honey with a bit of beeswax furniture polish on the back end as it warms in the glass. Palate is rich warm toasty oak, caramel on the front end but balanced by lemon zest acidity then quickly a mid to back-end palate of warm nettles and demerera sugar, toasted oak and vanilla creme brulee. Thick mouthfeel and quite heady alcohol. Long persistent finish with some agrreable but rather heavy resonance inside the head on the finale. I'd taken this out of the cellar thinking that it might be ending its best drinking period and it has definitely lost its youthful primary citrus-driven zinginess....actually rather faster than I'd expected, leaving something well-crafted but rather too oaky and heavy for my personal taste. However, if you like your Cali Chardonnay big, gutsy and well-crafted with lots of bass notes this is a very good wine.
