51% Syrah/49% Grenache, 14.5% alcohol. Mid neck fill. Deep garnet color in glass with thin fading rims. Lovely earthy bouquet. Wonderful "masculine" body on palate. Alcohol does not intrude. No subtlety or finesse just raw power. Slightly beyond peak. No sediment.

Pure and elegant red fruit and tarwith focused flavors. Toasty and spicy. Fresh acidity and solid structure. Medium to long length and pleasant finish.

Getting past its prime. Brash pepper and anise upon opening mellowed away to flavors of pepper and subtle strawberry with the grenache flavors stronger than the syrah.

With Wagyu boneless ribeye steak, roast carrots and potatoes. Opened 30 minutes prior to serving, decanted 5 minutes early. Fine sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Almost opaque crimson, good consistency to the rim. Nice fruit nose with touch of tobacco, lovely but with some power. Smooth, rich, integrated, medium weight. Tannin and acid beautifully in touch. A subtle richness expands with the tasting. Long finish with baking spices and black cherry. Wonderful.

Dark fruit, oak spice, bit of herb. The alcohol has integrated better since my last taste three years ago, but still not quite in balance with the oak and starting to get some drying tannin.

Black fruit and berries on the nose, some liquor notes with time. Palate of dark fruit, oak notes (cedar, some sweetness), bit of spice. A bit heavy-handed on the alcohol. Good acidity, medium (fairly soft) tannin. Not much length. Still young. Will wait on other bottles. Potential for higher score, but I'm unsure of future development.

Opened one hour in advance. Cedar/menthol aroma. Rich flavors of black fruit, spice, some heat. Vanilla, cedar, spice finish. Balanced, well integrated, interesting flavors, some complexity, good staying power.
I really liked this, but would like it better with less heat, which may come with more time. But it's a minor issue, and this is great right now.

With pan fried strip steak, squash and fresh-baked fougasse. Bottle opened 40 minutes prior to consumption - decanted 15 minutes prior. Clear garnet, no longer opaque but showing nicely. Nose was blackberry/dark cherry, and certainly enticing. Smooth and lively on the palate, tasting of fennel, chocolate, nice fruit, with some acid to make it interesting. Soft tannins in the back. Good length. Enough backbone to pair nicely with the steak.

Absolutely one of the best wines I have had in recent memory. Very generous dark berry fruit with an enticing herbal quality, leading to an earthy minerality make this an irresistable combination.

Better on Day 3. Good fruit/acidity. Classic Ridge oak. Strong tannins and some fun bass notes. Definitely still getting better, but enjoyable now with some air.

Really a very good wine. Had with an 06 Dehlinger syrah and the Ridge was a better wine. Deep purple. Average nose. Lots of nice fruit and lingering finish.

Still some chewy tannins, but drinking nicely with some air. Held up nicely on day two. Medium-Full bodied with dark fruits, spice and leather. Can go a while longer I think, but enjoyable now.

To me, this showed best on pop-n-pour, as the Grenache and Syrah components seemed to both be expressing themselves well on the palate. With air, the Syrah took over - showing some black olive and meatiness - while the Grenache receded and played second fiddle. The nose, however, continued to improve and was beautiful even after 6 hours, when I consumed the last half-glass.

YUM! Loved it! Just becoming ready. The Syrah and Grenache fruit components are easily discernible on the nose and palate, and the wine is clearly well-made. Long, complex finish where soft tannins appear.

Dark ruby color, nose shows Eucalyptus, wild blackberry, cedar, a little smoke. Palate is full, juicy but not too jammy, menthol, blackberry, bramble, smoked meats. Delicious!
Revisited after 3 hours slow ox - fruit is more red, tart raspberry, kirsch liqueur, cedar and spice, some earthy notes, peppery finish.
I think it's not really in the prime drinking window yet - excited to see how this develops.

Brambly, smoky aromas of blackberries and violets. Similar jammy fruit character on the palate. Tannins are mellowing nicely. Just barely ready to drink, but could easily hold another year or two.

All in balance, fruit, acidity and tannin are complimentary in this easy drinking Rhone Ranger. This will cellar nicely and improve, as the makers intended. Solid wine from the great Lytton Estate!

The Rhone Rangers (City Winery, 155 Varick Street, New York, NY 10013): The nose showed red berries, floral notes, and wild herbs with an airy lift to the aromatics. On the palate, it showed juicy ripe berries, ginger and baking spices which coated the senses through the long vibrant finish.
