Classical Musigny - balanced and etherial on both the nose and the palate, but a bit muted. Not showing its potential. Wait 10 more years, when tertial aromas will kick in. Vogue's version is ready, though.

Oregon Trip-Day 2 (Here and there, Willamette Valley): Light ruby with tawny rim. Surprisingly ripe, almost candied red fruit complemented by light higher toned green notes and subtle stem inclusion. Medium weight, beautifully flowing, very fine acidity and light remaining tannins. I loved how this evolved in the glass, with the burst of fruit and citrus receding to the background, yielding to and supporting a beautiful core of soil which carried through from beginning to end. Ultimately, this is more about the subtle earth and savory elements than the fruit. Movingly complex wine at an almost perfect point in time.

In a perfect spot. Quite elegant, precise, distinguished. Lacking a little follow through perhaps. But lovely balance and style. Drink now over next 5-7 years

The nose exudes royalty and dignity - precise and very tight. The attack is showing black fruits, but does not deviate from that precise quality, on the lean side but serious, deep without being rich or unctuous. Mid-way thru the acidity gets a bit strident and hints at a shutdown. Balance is good and while a lovely wine I would say it could benefit with further aging to round out the fruit and mellow the tannin.

Garnet in colour. No apparent bricking. On the nose, initially had a cured meat component that was overwhelming and quite exotic in terms of intensity. With time, this integrated, revealing raspberry, orange rind, cherry, decaying forest and tilled soil. On the palate, the length is insane here. Echoes on and on, even with the smallest taste. Impressive showing. Very early maturity and should continue to age gracefully for another couple decades.

Joseph Drouhin Dinner (Medlar (London)): Initially very dense, masculine, dry - a contrast to the more pretty and very open GE01. With more time and air this started to unfold rather nicely though hinting at further great potential. Lovely symmetry and purity here, very mineral. My hedonistic preference would be for the GE01 but the Musigny is the better wine and has more potential. I would give this another 5 years in bottle.

Burgundy dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): This so beautifully demonstrates “An iron fist in a velvet glove”. Very precise nose displaying pure red fruits, raspberry essence and cherry, truffle, grilled meat, flowers and strong presence of mineral. Very good concentration, lean and precise, strong presence of mineral, just right amount of acidity, nicely integrated tannins and clean seamless finish. Quite youthful but more mineral than fruit driven. Very polished wine.

Really stunning nose, that one could smell all day. Great complexity, floral notes, crystalline fruits and some earthy /minerally notes. Tighter on the palate, as it comes across a little bitter and more simple than the Jadot & De Vogue served alongside. Drinking quite well at the moment, but plenty of upside potential.

Still so young and primary. Nose has not really blossomed yet. There is a core of cranberry fruit that is mostly hidden behind some formidable structure. Earthy and serious. So much in reserve. See you in 10 years.

Quite light in colour. Sweet red fruits and floral elements. Also some earth and sauvage character on the nose which is starting to show proper Musigny compexity. A sense of hidden, concentrated fruits in the medium framed body. Lovely intensity and finesse. Still very young.

Tight, not giving much at the moment even with decanting. Aroma of strawberries and sweet red fruits. The taste is defined by chalky minerality that tells me this wine needs years more in the cellar. Tannin is present too, along with balanced acidity, and loads of hidden fruit. Try again in five years, 2017, at the earliest. It should be outstanding with time.

This is a marvelous wine that is just starting to wake up now and show its depth of graceful and yet powerful fruit. This will last a long, long time and improve quite a bit - we joked about finishing up the last bottles in 50 years. It has medium plus weight but great concentration and intensity, a seamless expression of the Musigny terrior.

Musigny (Marea): Next to the 1993 Jadot this was the most aromatically enticing of the reds, opening with a bona fide pungency to the aroma which is deep and animale and only rivaled in complexity by the 1993. It seemed from the scent that it was going to be vastly richer in body but it was only slightly so, continuing the theme of pamperingly soft textures that at least today were all velvet glove, hardly any iron fist.

Impromptu Burgundy-theme OL (organized in a single summer afternoon) (Zibbibo Restaurant, Palo Alto, California): Group's #3 (my #5) – 23 pts; 1, 1, 0, 0 –Dark cherry red color with clear meniscus; lovely cherry sous bois nose with depth and spice; tasty, tart red fruit, cherry and rosehips palate with high acidity and a sense of stems; medium finish 91+ pts. (my score increased greatly to this from 88 pts. on opening after 90 minutes in the glass)

The 01 Drouhin Musigny surprises with its youth - I think it will get there (and it’s pretty fabulous today) but its best days are ahead.

Red berries, strawberries, earthy notes, balanced and long finish, an elegant vintage for Drouhin. From magnum.

Somewhat underwhelming experience. Good bottle but young, tight, and one-dimensional.

Corked, which in my experience happens to be often the case with aged Drouhin burgs.
