Starting the red wines off with a bang. The first vintage and one of my favorites of the tasting. It’s very light and elegant and refined in style. At first perhaps a touch closed but it continued to open with time and had that nice gentleness (aka refinement) that I really like. Bit of floral, some rose hips. Luca’s first vintage and a very good start.

We had the 2013 Paje vintage at a tasting couple months ago and it was so much red fruits and so Burgundian style. Unfortunately this 2001 Crichet bottle seemed totally closed, maybe the Crichet magnum bottle just needs more years to open up. The 2001 Crichet was only bottled in August 2010.

From a magnum. Unfortunately, the wine was completely muted on both the nose and palate. The palate was also lean and astringent. It either needs a lot more time or its off tonight.

I would never call it Barbaresco if it was served blind. Soo Burgundian, lots of red food, silky tannins and fresh acidity very pungent. Simply gorgeous. At the very same time, it still possesses the Barbaresco flavours by showing that fresh white flowers on the nose, scent of truffle and crush stones, Round and velvet on the palate.

ROAGNA vs. BORGOGNA: Da Magnum è ancora più contratto e adolescenziale rispetto agli altri Crichet più giovani. Tanto frutto, tanto corpo, molto arrotondato. Goudron e terra. In bocca è incazzato nero!! Croccante acidità da giovincello, un monumento di freschezza immortale. Da attendere con fiducia....

Klar, dyp, mørk rød med mildnet kant. Forførende nese med moreller, lakris, fioler og markjordbær. Konsentrert, men luftig, intens frukt med dypt aromabilde preget av mørke bær. Flott munngrep. Frisk, spisset syre. Faste, finkornede tanniner i utgang. Sitter svært lenge i. Elegant Barbaresco som drikker flott allerede, men vil kunne ligge lenge.

Nick's Spectacular Birthday Dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): A deep ruby colour, deeper again than the Burgundies. An attractive nose of spices, melted road tar, tobacco and black cherries. In the mouth, a lovely mellow, softened wine, almost suggesting some fruit sweetness. The flavour spectrum is black and red cherries, tobacco and dried herbs, with some nice leather couch savouriness. Elegant, well structured and proportioned. A very good wine - it's only problem (for me) was being paired with the magnificent Giacosa. Accessible enough to drink now, but, again, with a long life still ahead of it. I'm probably underrating it here.

Dinner @ Librije: served from magnum. A superb wine, very elegant and refined. Packed with flavour and beautiful aromas: cherries, dark red fruits, very floral, some mint. Probably still 10+ years away from its peak, though this is hugely enjoyable right now.

Leiden visits Librije tasting: From Magnum. Burgundy like wine, not massive like italian wines can be, but elegant and understated, really like the style. Light red colour, nose tobacco and red fruit. Velvety red fruit taste, fresh, long beautiful finish.

Helt underbart! Det har allt man önskar av en riktigt bra Nebbiolo. Plommon, körsbär, lakrits, tobak, mint, rosor och en otroligt komplexitet och längd som är helt fantastiskt. Men på tok för ungt. Låt det ligga i källaren minst 5 år ytterligare. Man kan bara drömma om hur fantastiskt det här vinet kommer att bli.

Nebbiolo: Vigne del 1937 e del 1955, 100 giorni di macerazione, 8 anni di botte grande. Ancora austero, finissimo, minerale, setoso, sanguigno e rosso, poi la china, naso classico. Ti devi predisporre, l'esatto opposto dell'Asili. Se lo cerchi però, con pazienza e dedizione, lo trovi sia in bocca che al naso. Come ogni cosa della bella della vita finisce prima che sei riuscito a capirla fino in fondo. Avrò un'altra occasione?
