Decanted for 3 hours and still had a very perceivable barnyard funk. Subsided at about the 5-hour mark. Notes of crushed blackberry, sage, baking spice, and cedar. High acidity, high minerality. Mouthfeel was good. Tough to get past the barnyard though. Reminded me of the Havens reds from the early 2000s that were a fraction of the cost of this even accounting for inflation. Try second bottle in 2+ years.

Double decanted for one hour and left in the fridge for about 15 minutes.
I had this wine from a magnum about 2 years ago and it was sensational back them so now the expectations were very high. The wine is medium plus in body, showing firm tannins and sharp acidity, fair complexity and decent finish. Bottle variation? Maybe I had a bad day?
Two more bottles to play with in the near future...

Deep, dark purple. Herbal scents with dark blue fruits, toasted wood and cool menthol. In the mouth the wine is sweet, with grape hard candy and spice notes. Asphalt, glycerin and ripe plums. Overall low acid and ultra ripe. Lacks a little bit of dimension and structure. Nice drink, but overall a little too sweet for my taste.

Excellent and drinking well now. Right in between a classic Napa Cabernet and a new bigger California Cabernet. Not too much fruit or tannins. Just right.

Bought on the secondary market, and marred by a musty note that persisted through the evening. Otherwise a lovely wine, with red fruits, orange, pepper, a bit of oregano and both the flavor and texture of cream. I’m sure this was really oak, but the sense of cream was uncanny. A 95 point wine if the musty element had blown off.
Writing this note after drinking. Not as good as previous times having this. Wine was a lot less expressive. Decanted for 1.5 hours and went off other recent notes here. Maybe it just needed more time. Still a great Cab but just wasn’t approaching previous times having it.

Slow ox’ed for approximately an hour then drank for the next 3 hours. A little funk in the beginning and blew off slowly as we enjoyed it with various Japanese and Thai food. Raved as wine of the night during friends-gathering in San Francisco. Edged out a 2009 Chateau Leoville Barton. Obviously everyone likes the fruit-packed wine over the stiff-tannic wine. Though the Kapcsandy is a well balanced juice with acid and smooth tannins to match the fruit. I can drink and sniff this wine all day long.

This bottle was marred first by a barnyard funk that eventually blew off but only after a two hour decant. And then I got the hiccups! An extended bout of hiccups! By the last glass, both the wine and I were in a good place. Red fruits, orange blossom, oregano and charred earth. A mile long finish with just a touch of tannins that seemed almost to sparkle. An interesting evolution over the course of an evening, and ultimately a wine that lives up to the Grand Vin name.

This was my selection for our Couples Wine Group “Comeback”. I had this bottle waiting for a special moment and I thought it was not a better moment that this, a celebration of LIFE and Friendship. I was going through CellarTracker notes to see how to handle it, decanting time etc and I had it as “State Line Cuvée” which is their basic stuff (good but not great) so I was debating whether or not to take it... when I was almost ready to change my selection I went to the cellar and put out the bottle to show it to my girlfriend (something I have never done before) to realized it was the “Grand Vin”!!!!!!
So, I opened at 3:30pm and placed it into 2 decanters (its a magnum) and inside the wine cellars. At 4:30 I transferred it back into the bottle and left it inside the cellar until 5:30. We got to the restaurant at 6pm and the drinking started around 6:15...
My Kapcsandy State Lane Grand Vin was the opening act. For me that I tasted it at 3:30pm it was a massive change, from a very French and tied wine to a Complex unlike-Napa but Napa wine. Everyone loved the wine, medium+, magnificent integration of fruits, minerals, and floral notes. The mid palate is persistent, firm and full of dried fruits setting the stage for a magnificent finish that provoke for MORE and MORE...
Dark purple. Black current fruit. Classic cassis and pencil lead notes. Agree with others more Bordeaux than Cali fruit bomb. Great now, could improve over next 2-5 years.

I've waited a long time to open this bottle, but it was well worth the wait. This is a beautifully balanced Cabernet that drinks more like a left bank Bordeaux than a typical Napa valley floor fruit bomb (e.g., Caymus). As a result, it paired well with the northern Italian pasta dishes we shared, some of which were delicate dishes that you wouldn't normally drink a Cabernet with.

Some great wines with the boy Scouts - Year 2 (BSA Fundraiser): Wow. Seldom have I started a tasting with such a great big red wine. But this worked for tonight. Purple in color. The nose has cedar and a nice funk to it. Also plenty of cassis, some cherries bit of chocolate and spice. Wonderful texture. Complex and open. The bottle had been open for a while, not sure how long. Cassis, earthy layers with some cherries. This is pretty ripe but overtly; the alcohol is "low" at under 14%. Still, clearly California. Delicious. No hurry but this is starting to enter an early maturity.

I upped this since last tasting one year ago. Decanted for 4 hours and this was singing. What a well built wine. If blind would have thought Bordeaux not CA. Well done Lou K. You are special. The complexity of this wine is amazing. Nose starts with brick, cedar but in the mouth it's totally different. Red fruit, no over ripeness, with a lingering finish that I found myself saying wow after each mouthful. Yes, folks you can find classic "first growth" Bordeaux in the USA. Try it before opining. S'il t'en plait!

Cooking School Finale Lunch Cabernets WA98-100 (Loretta Paganini School fo Cooking): This was opened for a bout 6 hours ahead of time and really needs about 48. The nose has dust, bricks and lots of cassis, slight tobacco and dark cherries. On the palate, this drinks like an 09 Bordeaux. That is to say, ripe, accessible, but holding something back. It unwinds in the glass to show nice layering. Great balance. Long finish. A glass held for Day 2 was even better and I upped my score a point.

Trelio with the fellas (Clovis Ca.): Another almost too sweet cab…..ripe liqueured fruit, creme de cassis, big sour skin acidity…I think some might have been calling a little VA? Had some nice rich earth, wood spice, licorice…..but just a tad too sweet to be outstanding imo.

Dinner with the Gilchoa's; 2/16/2014-2/18/2014 (My House): A classical type of wine that is well balanced and does a wonderful job of pairing with some ribeye. Not over the top at all. If you like ripe, juicy Napa Cabs this is not exactly the wine for you but it still is a lovely wine. Classic aromas of dark fruit and espresso and even some earthiness. A nice long finish. Decanted as Lou himself says to decant. 15 hours in the bottle after I popped the cork and replaced and then decanted for an hour before consuming. That really worked well. My #2 wine for the night. But on another night it could of been the champ

Dinner with the Gordon's; 2/16/2014-2/17/2014 (Our lake house): Just a classic well built wine. Certainly more France than CA. On the nose you would think classic French Bordeaux. Not over extracted for such a young wine. Decanted for 8 hours. Drank this alongside the 09' Roberta's Reserve. Everyone liked it but prefered the RR which is 96% merlot. I was surprised that this Cab did not stand ahead. Not a good QPR.

Wine Dinner at Collyer Catering In Westport, CT. (Collyer Catering): Tasted this side by side with the 2008 and really it might just be a preference in style. Got a very similar nose on both but I would say this one had French vanilla, cherry and blackberry. The palate revealed some dark berry flavors, vanilla, blackberry and a touch of earth. For everything the 2008 was, I felt this was just a little behind, with the greater nose on the 2008 and a slightly longer finish. The table was pretty divided between the two wines which tells you how close it was.

My first try of the Gran Vin, and I was not disappointed. Incredible balance. Too often young CA cabs are so heavy/sweet that I honestly feel sick to my stomach drinking them. Theris is none of that here. Red fruit; dusty tannins; violets; really deep flavors that don't invite description as much as they are to be enjoyed. And I did enjoy. This was drinking beautifully, without decanting, though the wine opened up more and more over the evening. These are expensive, but I am way more than satisfied by the quality. Lovely, lovely, lovely experience. Glad I have more. At the Playground with foie gras.

Tasted at the winery. Dark ruby toward purple from core to rim. Powerful aromas of red and black currant, polished leather, baking spices dominate at first, but additional complexity pushes through every 10 minutes. Full-bodied, seamless and more open knit and slightly less powerful than the 07 and (most certainly) the 08, this manages just 13,7% abv but make no mistake, it absolutely possesses your palate, as well as your entire frontal lobe. An open spot on the mid-palate will most likely fill in with some bottle rest. 96% Cab Sauv, 3% Merlot, 1% Cab Franc with 20 months in 100% (all new) French oak. Be sure to aerate 12-15 hours prior to serving. An absolute joy to drink and most certainly worth the price of admission. recommended + Drink thru 2025, score: A

Well stored, high fill.
At Italian steak restaurant.
Waitress opened cleanly. Let it breath a little in the bottle.
Deep violet. This year's grand vin was 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet franc (1%) and Merlot (3%)
Nose of blueberry, sour cherry and Cinnamon.
Taste of blueberry, sweet tarts, cherry, umame. Lingering on tongue 10 seconds. The bottle kept drawing us back.
Kapcsandy belongs on Napa's first growths.
