1st bottle consumed of 3 originally purchased, this wine is drinking nicely. Dark and opaque, showing aromas and flavors of smoke and black cooked fruits, coffee grounds and black pepper, and fresh meats. There is ample acidity to keep the wine from being flabby. This is not a big and bold, uninteresting Syrah...it has a soil-driven character about it, and will likely drink well through 2030+.

Deep garnet, nose of tobacco and ocean air. On the palate, dry high acidity, medium tannin, surprisingly low alcohol, medium body, medium intensity, primary characteristics of slightly unripe red cherries and black pepper with some mineral notes on the finish. It's an interesting wine, surprisingly low alcohol, complex but lacks much follow through. Very good. Possible it needs more time to develop.

Dark garnet, not quite opaque, medium full body; nose shows a nice melange of olive, pepper, anise, spiced herbs, layered over a core of clean dark fruit; vibrant dark fruit on the palate, deep blackberry, boysenberry, with those same swirling spices, pepper, anise; youthful tannins are still present and slightly mouth gripping, but resolved enough to make this quite drinkable, and lending a somewhat creamy texture. The group I served this to blind struggled to place it, torn between Rhone and cool climate California. I can see that, as this has all the positive attributes of a quality Northern Rhone syrah, while not fitting cleanly into the character we expect from Rhone (honestly, that probably means the brett we are used to in many Rhones, even at a very low level, is missing in this wine). This is a delicious, complex, quality Syrah, with many years of positive development ahead of it.

Wine Dinner (Zoom): Tasted blind. Medium-deep ruby, no bricking and youthful color; high intensity aromatics, purple fruits, minerals, gamey, relatively clean; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, medium-minus tannins, balanced medium alcohol (12.6%), blueberry fruit which lacks a bit of persistence through the midpalate; finish is medium to medium-minus length. This seems like a youthful Northern rhone syrah, polished without being overtly modern. Length on the finish holds this back from being really excellent. 89

Tasted over 3 hrs -opaque dark purple -fairly complex dark berry olive juice -med+ acidity, med/med- weight earthy tart savory elements, med/med- tannins -this has picked up some weight with age and has some interesting savory complexity, not overtly mature - who knows it might even get more interesting over several more years

Dry, medium body, 13% alcohol (actually 12.6%), high acid, medium tannins (tissue-paper). .
Lean slightly sprucey/pine notes.
Pepper and structure suggests N. Rhone syrah. Leaner body and herbaceousness suggests Crozes or Saint-Joseph, not Hermitage or Cornas.
Final call: given the slight age, 2013 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage. Actually: 2010 Copain Halcyon Syrah, 12.6% Analysis: I'm not far off. It is a pretty clean for the style.

Drank one of these 3 months ago, which came off kind of boring to me. Figured I’d try my final bottle last night, as I wanted something that if I didn’t care for I could just dump the rest and move on. Turned out the bottle last night met the savory flavors I was chasing to pair with dinner. Huh. With 12.6% ABV, I drank about 1/2 of it and tossed the remainder back into the fridge. Retasting tonight paired with lentil soup, the wine has filled out some more. Dried purple flower, black cherry, charcoal, olive, some chalky tannin that is mild to moderate in intensity, finishing with a savory, tarry, creosote-like note. This bottle is far better than the one from June and shows some decent structure to keep aging.

Light black fruit—blackberry, plum. Noticeable savoriness. I am a bit surprised, though neither disappointed nor pleased, that tannin is quite sedate. A pleasant, though not compelling wine.

Haven't tasted one of these since 2014 and this bottle left me disappointed, as I expected better. While I didn't take any notes on the bottle as we drank through it, I remember both thinking that it showed muddled, not very interesting and lacked definition. I dumped out the last 1/2 of my glass and didn't try it again. Maybe an off bottle or maybe the wine isn't in a good place or headed anywhere good either. Hmmm. Got one left, will drink sometime soon and see if my experience is the same.

It would be really nice if wines that seem like they'll age really well tasted really bad when young. Alas, that is not true in this case. Nice fruit. Some very nice (old) oak. Really nice tannins. Good acidity. Light alcohol. Just very very good. Tastes great now if you are ok with some tannins. Everything lined up to age very well.
Just wrapped up the bottle I opened y/day. Still showing lot of structure tonight, of chalk, some savory notes, dark red fruit, lots of slate. I won't open my next one for another 2 years. Very good, low alc, tactile syrah.

Copain Dinner; 8/4/2013-8/6/2013 (FMIII in the OC): This has all the fireworks you'd want with black olive and a huge dose of spicy black pepper. There's a stem quality combined with a very prevalent chalk note arriving mid palate straight through to the finish. Finish is medium plus and drying. Hey, it's a 2010, this needs to rest. Should be wildly entertaining in the future if you like this style.

Copain Dinner @ The House With Wells Guthrie: Of the 16 Copain wines tasted last night, this is the one I spent the least time understanding, and unfortunately none left to retaste today! My notes last night say pepper, and I do recall that being the feature most distinct of the 2010 syrah flight (Baker Ranch and Hawks Butte that were alongside it). Purple flower, grapey. They'll be plenty of time over the next couple years to open and enjoy a few more of these so for now, this is my short check-in on the Halcon, FWIW.

PopnPour, tasted over 4 hrs -opaque very dark red, almost black -spice, wet stone, black fruits, slightest hint of olive/tapenade -med+ acidity, surprisingly light weight for the color, some reserved blue/black fruits, hint of bitter/stemminess adds complexity and a bit of spice, decent length with somewhat coarse tannins -nice wine, more fruit than earth but far from over-ripe, predict it will peak in a couple years as it needs a little time to shed some structure but may not have the fruit concentration to last for extended cellaring,

Opened about a week ago, then gassed and put in the fridge until tonight. Brilliant dark ruby color. On the first night, this was all mineral. A real rock-head wine. Crushed granite and green olive on the nose. Quite lean on the palate, with nice acids and a lavender edge to the blueberry/blackberry fruits. Seems to have evolved a bit over the course of a week, but still pretty reserved. Noticeable spice, underbrush, pepper and leather components from the high stem inclusion. I had the '10 Baker Ranch last week, and though I love the minerality of the Halcon, the Baker is a much more complex and nuanced wine. The Halcon still seems a bit one-dimensional now, though I am sure it will improve with bottle age and air. 90+?

Lots of great Cabs, Syrahs and others NVW&C (Napa Valley Wine & Cigar): It was interesting to compare with the Halcon Alturas. Apparently, Wells, uses stems on this. It shows not as ripe and does have a green element to the more raspberry (than boysenberry) fruit. Not sure how much is due to the vintage differences and how much to winemaking. Certainly a very good cool climate Syrah though I preferred the Halcon.

Copain Stopover--2011 Harvest (Copain Winery--Russian River): Pop and pour. Listed alc 12.6%. Generous and yet still tight. More concentrated than the 2010 Baker Ranch. Juicy with blue fruits, lots of it really, with some red lying up against it. Great acid and will be a nice pair with food.

Still youthful and to me not yet a Halcon that has been truly defined. Cherry and blue fruit with more tannin. Too soon to really say more as opposed to the 2010 Baker Ranch, this wine is quite far behind in for me showing what it will become.
