This came after some big gun champagnes, so I know my palate was off, but I found something decided wrong with this bottle. It poured beautifully, with energetic delicate mousse and pale creamy yellow, but on the nose I got a strong whiff of malted or sour milk. The others present found something a little off-putting as well, but I was the only one totally turned off. It was nothing like our last bottle at Cagen a year or so ago which showed extremely well. I don't know what the flaw was, but I'm going to call it flawed.

Golden hue with fine mousse and clear maturity. Refreshing and rich opening up with grilled lemon and brioche with an lemonpeel acidity tang. Evolving into fresh sponge cake, cream with sweeter notes but closing down after about 3 hours when the fruit started drying out. Drinking very well right now!

Elegant and beautiful aroma. This smells decadent and rich for a Champagne. Soft, mellow, ripe intensity on thee palate. Finish is tart, rich and creamy, but something a little odd about it. Still very enjoyable.

Not really concentrated on sufficiently for a useful note, but this is very very nice. Biscuity, buttery entry followed by a good length of fresh, slightly apricoty fruit and crisp finish. Lovely poise, elegance, very classy stuff. ****1/2

$74.99 full retail. Opened following the fantastic Diebolt-Vallois Cuvee Prestige (see TN). Slightly off-putting, sulphur element on the nose. On the palate, it's enormous, with broad, rich Chardonnay flavors of nuts and honey. Quite Burgundian. One of the most full-bodied Champagnes I've ever had. Gorgeous texture. I am a bit concerned about the sulphur note on the nose... (CV 4934)

Entirely made in 2-20 year old barrels, with no battonage then 5 g/l of dosage after the disgorgement at the start of the year. On the nose I was a little concerned as the oak was clearly to the fore, but no sign of oak on the palate. I suspect in a year or two that will have fully integrated, there is certainly more than enough rich full cherry apricot and peach to balance it out. Less angular than the 1999, a very nice wine. XX

Sadly starting to fade. Fine mousse still but there was some signs of it starting to dry out, bringing an odd sherry twinge to the aftertaste

BYOB Night at Foreign Legion (Foreign Legion, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Very small pour. This was more advanced, creme brulee, sour apple, sour dough bread, citrus, almond paste, good minerality, oxidative.

A nice mix of red and green apples and acid. Needs an hour or so in the bottle to integrate. In a very good place right now.

Finally, some maturity has set it. Very fine now, minerality, complexity.

The fruit has developed a lot over the last 2 years, but being a race horse blanc de blancs, the high acidity remains.
