Good brick red color and soft bouquet. Drinking very well for its age. Good fruit still coming through with long palate and good tannins. One of the top two red wines at our wine groups tasting last night. Needs at least 2 hours of airing / decanting before optimum drinking.

Deep garnet. Very pronounced nose - dark berry fruits, black pepper, leather, earth, some game hints too. Rich on the palate but with a nice balancing acidity that keeps it fresh. The tannins are evident but ripe and support the texture very well. Long finish.
Interesting to try this after a very good 2015 St Joseph from Domaine du Tunnel. This was much the bigger wine but the the St Joseph was more elegant and classical. Both lovely in different ways.

Medium Garnet from the appearance. Med+ intensity on the nose, red/dark cherry, farmyard, cedar, earthy, lavender, toast, perfume, meaty, chocolate, white pepper, developing. Med+ intensity, dry, high alcohol, high acidity, high and powdery tannin, med+ to full body, med+to long finish. Very good wine. Still drinks young and has potential for ageing. Tasted it blind in the first place. Completely got tricked and thought it's an old world wine with a lot of earthy and dusty notes (with 1 hr decanting). After 2.5 hours, black fruits, mocha and some sweet spices started to shine. Great balance and intensity yet still some elegance in it. The finish is very impressive and persistent.

Starting to show some signs of character. Remains young. Nice fruit, powerful but not overly intense. There is a savoury note that flows through to the finish. The tannins are firm. It's the brightness that, for me at least, holds me back. Give it another 3 to 5 years.

Decanted. Dark fruit and spice. Big nose, but smooth and almost oily on the palate. Very difficult to put down. Seems youthful, but everything is integrated well and this is drinking quite well.

So pleased with this wine. Everything I expect from St Henri. Very youthful and alive and this showed in the colour. The wine had clear fruit, depth of flavour, a sense of elegance and complexity which all added up to a naturally very “moreish” experience. Flavour was mulberry, clove, leather. A wonderful early fruit forwardness with a more savoury finish. Absolutely years still in this wine.

Sunday lunch with the family. Roast Rack of Lamb, with baked carrots and potato's and steamed cauliflower and peas. Washed down with a bottle of 2007 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz. Penfolds are a little bit coy as to where they sourced the fruit, "In the lead up to the 2007 vintage, fruit from vineyard sites fitting the St Henri style were identified and batched according to those with the desired aromatics, concentration and structure".
Purchased from First Choice a month or so back as part of a "buy two for $120.00" promotion (including delivery). Snuck into the cellar on delivery (and intercepted the credit card bill) and allowed to sit there for a few weeks, then trotted out today as if it had been in there for donkeys ages. The lengths a retired bloke on a budget has to go to would cripple a lesser man.
Decanted and allowed to breath for one and a half hours, the wine was singing when put to the taste test. Dark red with some reddish/browning at the edges. Good fruit, dark berries and ripe plums. Fine tannins, balance of acid and wood. Good mouth feel and length. More in the drink now realm, not one that I would test for another decade, maybe 3-5 years tops. Pretty good considering 2007 was not considered as a good vintage. 92.
Dark red Cedar on the nose Pleasant grippy tannins A lot of the fruit is gone - suspect black currant was once there - gives the illusion of sweetness Long, long savoury finish Did not go well with the manchego or pecorino i had

Holidays 2017: The last bottle in the lineup and thus suffered from tasters’ palate fatigue. I chose it to anchor the lineup because I think it might be potent and special but alas it was fairly mundane and slightly overextraced. Maybe should have polished it off a few years ago.

Magnum. Nose is blackberry and bramble with some secondary notes starting. Still very young tasting. Quite a bit of alcohol heat. Lovely core of fruit. Good tannins. Secondary notes are starting to come through. Balance is good. Shiraz is certainly obvious to the flavour profile. Dense. Can't comment on colour, restaurant was to dark.

Nice enough shiraz but for its pedigree was a little disappointing. Nothing wrong with the wine, and certainly still on the young side with at least 5 years of development ahead, just lacks something unique. Hopefully it will get better in the coming years.

Davyd's birthday at Hotel Michael. Pop and poured. Drank over 1.5 hours. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of black pepper, sweet spice, licorice, blackberries, blueberries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), ripe puckery high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of black pepper, blackberries, black cherries, blueberries, licorice, sweet spice. Hints of tobacco and tar with more air. Long finish. Very good quality. This is pointing in the direction of Northern Rhone, but the fruit sweetness and intensity is unmistakably Aussie. An infant now, good potential for the future. Keep for another 3-4 years at least for more development.

Deep color, still very young. Aromas of blackberries and mint, jammy. One of the most satisfying St. Henri I had in a long time. Balance is good, with a slight touch of heat on the mid-palate. Long finish. Drink or hold until 2027.

Decanted an hour before drinking and on reflection should have double decanted. A nice wine however that continued to open up over the course of an hour. You can tell that unusually for a St Henri, it is pure Shiraz with not added Cab Sauv. Still a lot of aging potential in my opinion and as I have another 5 in the case, I reckon one every couple of years.

In spite of the dark colour this wine has collapsed, all that is left is the Penfolds structure (added acid, largely). It's devoid of flavour until the finish.
Not a great vintage for St Henri, but in this case the Penfolds recipe has worked against the wine, they tried to build something that would age, and have succeeded in that it will take a very long time to turn to pale vinegar, but its brief period as an aged wine worth drinking is over.
Drink NOW.

Decanted. Medium to heavy sediment. Perfect colour and movement in the glass. Low-key nose (spiced plums, blueberry, some smoke and tobacco). Opulent and graceful texture. Dominant flavours as per nose. Short finish (probably affected by tannins and retained sediment).
An elegant and subtle St Henri more reminiscent of Northern Rhone or even (in texture and refinement) Bordeaux. Still quite closed, this wine ideally requires another 3-5 years cellaring (at least) but it still makes for pleasant drinking now.

Penfolds Dinner (The Pawn - Hong Kong): Dark, but not looking extracted. Ripe rich fruit, smokey, a yummy factor. Some tar, espresso, tons of licorice, black tea, a tad sweet. For Tim, this was not good enough, he wanted a happy ending here, adn did not get it. In the end it is a solid wine, coming from a tough year. Even though this is sourced the same way, aged in old oak, it seems to have lost that old throw back style. Penfolds, Peter, please treat the history of this wine better. It came across to me as very standard Aussie style, not th restrained St. Henri's style that is so Atypical Aussie.

{screwcap, 14.5%} Solid ruby. Refined and youthful aromas of plum, liquorice, chocolate and spice. The palate has lusciously spicy but not jammy fruit; ultra-fine powdery tannins aid in the silky texture. It's medium-full bodied, with a lovely even palate, anda medium-long finish devoid of heat. Although enjoyable enough now, it feels like it will bloom quite promisingly given more time, although it doesn't seem to me to be in the very first rank of vintages for this label. Fine sediment indicates it should be decanted for future drinking.

Tons of plum and cherry on the nose, along with some strawberry jam and bitter chocolate. More cherry on the palate, along with some coffee bean, plum, black pepper, and clove. Palate is dominated by spice, and is showing a touch of heat. Long finish, ending with notes of spice.
