Precise and detailed mid to full red fruit in a silky and finely mineral frame last night, softening and opening to a far sweeter and rounder wine tonight, a little more crowd pleasing, but less detail and line. Both versions good. Bodes well for future bottles... ***1/2

Seems to have taken on some weight in the past five years, and needs to age at least another five years. Red fruited, but with a bit of darker fruit on the back end, plenty of structure, still has tannins to shed, very good acidic backbone. Yet this still has a charming and sexy lushness which really makes it enjoyable to drink. Yum!

A glass from towards the bottom of a restaurant bottle. Densely silky, mid to dark red fruit. Reasonably fragrant. Still some structure, but getting there. ***

On first day, muted and very light. But two days later , beautifully floral scented and pristine clear bright red polished fruit. Silky tannins and affable character. Delicious village.

Decanted for about an hour last night which helped. On first opening it was clear that this wine is shutting down for a while. That being said, there was a loviness to the wine that came through. A little spice and a medium to long finish made this a nice wine even at this young age. Don't have a ton of Bertheau wines, but I'm happy I started buying some of these Chambolles over the last couple of vintages.

Decanted about two hours before starting on it. A lovely, lacy and elegant Chambolle, with just a hint of spice for a brief moment or two. This continued to open up over the course of the evening. Charming, floral, very pretty red fruit (think raspberries). Shows crisp acidity and fine tannins; quite firmly structured. E really liked this (as did I), and also noted that it seems quite young. A fine AOC Chambolle of elegance and grace, with a bright future.

A little awkward and disjointed on the nose and palate at first, with a high toned herbal element and sharp acidity dominating, but with air it smooths out and a core of pure red fruit emerges. It's very elegant and nicely balanced, never profound but everything I'd expect from a traditional Chambolle and lovely to drink.

Drank over 3 days. At first this was quite ungiving and in need of hours of air. Given enough time it became a really finely balanced and coolly seductive, classically styled Chambolle with those lovely red fruits, nice spiciness and that distinctive lacy structure. Excellent intensity and long aftertaste. Best on the last day. This really is a fine village wine, but also one that demands patience of years in cellar or hours in decanter.

Guy's Night Out at Shunjuu (Extra Space / Shunjuu, Robertson Quay): Still pretty good, but not quite as impressive as when we tried it in barrel. This had landed two months or so back, so it should not have been in a state bottle-shock. However, it was quite tight. The nose showed subtle, slightly submerged notes of sweet blue fruits, some violets and chalky earth. A bit of spicy, briary notes floated out with time, but none of the flowery perfume that I have come to associate with Bertheau's wines. This was an unusually reticent bouquet actually. The palate was a bit better. This had firmish grip for a village, with fine tannins coating the teeth on the attack before the wine opened up into clean, primary flavours of black cherries, blueberries maybe, with a savoury underlining of earth and mineral. This has shut down quite a bit from the charming, ethereal wine that we had in barrel, but it remains a wine of good promise, with lovely balance and structure. It was a tad bit short at the end, with a spicy, slightly bittersweet briar and black tea finish, but there was nevertheless a lot of stuffing for a Chambolle at its level. One to hold for a few years at least before trying again.

Burgundy 2011 Day 3: Visit to Domaine Francois Bertheau (Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy): This was a very good village. The nose was pure Chambolle, almost a shock after having come from tasting NSG - this was all pretty fresh cut flower scents, gentle earthiness and a little mushroomy tone. Very delicate on both the nose and the palate actually. It was really elegant in the mouth, with slinky, barely-there tannins wrapped around a nice pure expression of fleshy red cherries, dates and berries, all juicy and high-toned and ran through with the most refreshing, almost thirst quenching acidity that carried the wine into a fresh, clean, elegant finish. This is about as stereotypically feminine a Chambolle as I have drunk in a long time. Still a bit simple at this stage, but it is so delicious and so absolutely drinkable that I would happily down a bottle of this every day. Lovely stuff. 89-91

Very closed right now. Dense but not showing much. Hard to know how this will evolve, although the pedigree and vintage imply promise.
