Very good, but not great Dead Arm. Rich and meaty, good acidity. We had it with chicken dish, but would have been really good with a long, slow cooked braised dish.

Dark inky blackish red with a restrained nose of stewed brambly black and blue fruits, camphor, no noticeable oak or vanilla nose but a dominant rubbery characteristics. This medium-bodied old vine Shiraz is quite smooth and balanced at this juncture but does contain a good amount of silky tannins and definitely not a “fruit bomb” by any means. The flavor profile is dominated by dark brambly fruits, some black pepper, Liberica coffee, capsicum, fresh tomato leaves, boiled meat, new tires, a good amount of savory acidity which gives this wine a considerable appeal and drinkability then finishes with some wet mineral overtones. Unlike my previous experiences with the 2003 and 2008 versions of this wine but this one seems to be drinking at its prime. Although this is good, yet somehow I always expected more from this iconic winery but never seem to get what I was looking for in this range and quality of South Australian Shiraz. This Dead Arm is having its best showing on the 3rd night. The rubber tire notes have completely dissipated as a whole become much smoother and more integrated then the previous two nights. This merits a slight increment in score.

The 2009 Dead Arm is deep garnet in color and completely opaque. This demands an hour-plus to open up, but once it does the nose showcases aromas of blackberry, baked black cherry, redcurrant, licorice, smoke, chocolate, coffee, forest floor, underbrush, and charred red meat. Once on the palate, the wine offers notes of blackcurrant, juicy plum, cherry, tobacco, loamy soil, black pepper, wet crushed rock, mocha, tar, and oak. This is full-bodied with high acidity, medium (+) tannins, and a long finish dominated by flavors of dark berries and char. The wine is powerful yet balanced with the structure to go at least another 5 years.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Upon first tasting, this was powerful and smooth. Clear notes of blackberries, blackcurrant and smoked meat. No alcoholic heat or sharp edges. Quite high levels of extraction, but it carries it well. Served with a nice aged ribeye, sweet potatoes and glazed carrots. Assesment in the first 60-90 minutes was 92-93 points.
We did not finish the bottle immediately, so we returned to the leftovers two hours after initially serving it. At this point, the wine had somehow fallen apart. The extraction became much more obvious and then wine developed a bitter core. One of the very rare cases where we do not finish a bottle of nice wine. Decant this wine for 30 minutes, but then drink fairly quickly. It is also almost too dense for two people to finish a bottle, but would be great for 3-4 people who could enjoy its exuberance upon opening.

This bottle was a bit better than the one I had 5 months ago, still some pepper but more complexity, with rich concentrated classic Aussie Shiraz flavors of black berry, dark currants, hints of blueberry, But still some primary flavors to integrate. Needs a little more time but not as much as most would think maybe a 2 to 4 years.

Decanted for 1.5 hours before drinking. Nose of earth, gamey notes, and stewed raspberry. Palate was similar to the nose, at initial taste. Over time though, the fruit became bitter after about 4 hours in the glass decanter. Not sure what to make of this wine - perhaps not ready, but overall it was not enjoyable for me. Concerned that as it got more air, it seemed to get more bitter.

Brought from a cool 53 degree cellar, decanted for 1 hr which brought the temperature to 62 degrees. Tasted over 3 hrs, served with braised beef, portobello mushrooms, tortellini all in a Marsala sauce. Unfortunately this did not flatter this shiraz due to it's jammy, syrupy components. However after dinner this started to get it's groove on exposing all that blackberry jam, blueberry syrup, with hints of chocolate covered cherries and hints of spice. Not the most complex vino in the world but nonetheless quite interesting, give this some time or an extended decant, but be careful with food pairings.

As the last notes stated, this is a concentrated and brooding Shiraz. Very spicy, with a higher than normal acidity for Dead Arm which, will give this wine good cellar time. Medium and slightly course tannins. Screw caps are in, in Australia so, we have to live with that piece.

"2014" Sydney International Wine Show - stewarding notes; 10/13/2013-10/18/2013 (Blue Mountains, NSW): {screwcap, 14.5%} Youthful soft liquorice/pepper/spice characters. The style of this has certainly changed over the last decade, as the raisin/oak qualities are downplayed in the quest for more freshness and life. I would really only call this medium-bodied, in fact, with its ripe blackberry fruit, even palate, soft oak, medium chalky tannins and refreshing acidity. Good mid-palate presence, and a medium-length finish round things off; it turns out to be a nicely balanced wine, avoiding heat on the finish, which should age and improve for a decade – more than you could say from the offerings from the late-90s.
D'Arenberg - McLaren Vale.: Comes from 18 different plots. Utipa - fungal disease that affects arms, but not the roots. Concentrated and brooding, red cherry, and full raspberry. Pungent spice on the palate. Fleshy palate, medium tannin. Again, clay-y tannin.
