Second Sunday Group: 1995 Beaune (Eagle Brook CC): Double blind. Notes of tea leaf and cherry. The palate follows the bouquet but the fruit is a bit more forward. Develops a bit of an earthy quality, almost mushroomy. Shows a bit more acid than the others in the lineup.

Indistinct nose of red fruits and some mild earthy secondary aromas. Palate is thin, shrill and more or less fruitless with nothing else going on to save it. I personally don't think this wine is in a bad place, but rather, is either just past it or was not a good wine to begin with...guessing the latter.

Patience was rewarded with this wine. It is at a good place now. Strong cherry earthy aroma, cherry fruit on palate, damp forest, medium finish. Very enjoyable with pan-roasted duck breast. Last tasted 10 years ago and I thought it was terrible then.

This has continued to get richer with age, but will always be a lean, somewhat undernourished wine, I think. Medium light cherry color with slightly browning rim. Restrained but complex nose of rasberries, cinnamon, dark chocolate and iron shavings. Medium to light bodied, angular, austere, with rasberry, citris and iron flavors. High acidity and healthy tannins make it feel compressed. Perhaps in time this will emerge, but I worry the fruit will go first. Still, it has a certain elegance and complexity to it.

Medium cherry/red, with paling at the rim. Still youthful looking, overall. Aroma: lots of sweet red fruits, a touch of earth and mint, very pinot nose. On the lighter side in terms of intensity, but good complexity. Palate: intense sour cherry, earth, candied, fruits, fennel, perhaps a little thin.... seems narrowly focused.. lots of acidity or perhaps needs more air (after bottle being open for 2.5 hours). a combination of acidity and some moderate to hard tannins pinch the finish a little, though the sour cherry flavors last for quite awhile. still feels like it hasn't come all together, and perhaps the fruit isn't there to support the tannins.-- with steak and with more air, rasberry and cassis notes emerged on the palate, and the wine tasted a tad richer, but still in a high acidity, lean profile.
