Bordeaux Wimps (La Trompette, Chiswick): Medium gold. Rich nose, buttery, oxidative notes. Medium bodied, buttery, oxidative, finishes flat. just about clinging on but has seen better days. NR

Bought upon release and evidently stored well because this bottle is showing particularly well for its age. In bottle it showed a golden hue, but poured into the glass it turned out to be bright yellow/straw, not showing its age. The same goes for the aroma. Yes, if served blind I would recognize it as being a mature white bordeaux, but Would not have guessed it being 16 years old. Knowing its age, wow what a youthfull senior citizen! Wood nicely integrated into the waxy, lemony oily stone fruit. Medium/bold taste with good balance. The acidity still keeps it “fresh”. If tasted blind I would rate it 91. knowing its pedigree I rate it 95. Hence the 93 score.

Lisa's Big Birthday with Very Good Wine (Riverwoods, IL): Tasted double blind. Grassy and lemony, I immediately thought Sauv Blanc from Bordeaux. Seemed to be getting tired with ok weight and depth. OK overall, but slightly disappointing when unveiled.

Vinetasters: Pessac-Léognan (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Very, very old. Shows some serious oxidation on the nose, with lots of bruised, sour apples. The palate is better than the nose, and the intense waxiness shows. Sherry-like.

Stored in a climate-controlled cellar since release. It needed a few minutes to open up (initially restrained with funk on nose), but once it did, the nose featured waxy coconut notes, followed by honey, marmalade, and a touch of pasture with added time. The Semillon seemed to dominate throughout the night, with a round, lush, and somewhat oily texture in the mouth yielding concentrated flavors of citrus fruits (i.e., melon, orange, etc.), and a particularly long, mineral-laced finish. It is in great shape! It could likely go many more years, but it was very open last night, I wish I bought more. It didn't have the degree of complexity as the '04 Girardin Corton-Charlemagne opened a couple months ago, which prevented a higher score.

Served blind. Attractive nose has mature white fruit with good concentration -- the SB notes (grapefruit, grass, etc.) are much more subdued and integrated. Fruit is more waxy and melony. Acid provides bite and freshness. The Semillon is far more prevalent in this wine than the 2013 version of the same wine tasted 10 minutes before this one.

Latour, Cos, Gracia, Pape Clement +++: Loved the showing for this bottle. Bought on release. Medium to light golden in color. Pop and pour. The nose has lemon chiffon, a bit of orange creamsicle, some vanilla and also a fig newton note. Wonderful creamy texture. On the palate, this is complex, layered and deep. It got better all night long. We drank this with appetizers and a bit more with dessert. Lemon cream, some orange and layered complexity. Long finish. Beautiful right now, probably at peak, but no hurry.

Splendide.

Three Decades of Pape Clement (La Folie Restaurant in San Francisco): This is was one of my first experience with a white Bordeaux so i didn't know too much what to expect and i was quite surprised by the strong amount of oak. It reminded me of the oaky California chardonnays, but with more depth on the palate.

Matched against a mature Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet. OK so it couldn't quite stand toe-to-toe with the Burgundy but this little belter has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of (and was probably a beter match with the salmon dish). Lovely balance between the zingy freshness of the sauvignon and the waxy depth of the semillon, in the blend this is top quality. Quite a strong oak presence and really needs a few years to come together but an admirable showing in a night of great wines.

Bright golden in color. At the beginning very sharp nose with lot of minerals, but after some aeration became softer with a herbal - oaky character. On the palate is full - bodied, with flavors of lemon peel, minerals, dried herbs, bitter orange and oaky vanilla, (perhaps a bit excessive). Very complex white wine, with medium acidity and long aftertaste. To pair with grilled fish, poultry or goat cheese.

Golden straw color. Slight oxidation. Honeysuckle, pears - notes of hazelnuts, some cheese. Bone dry. Nice but was probably better a few years ago.
