  • Light red with faint brownsh tinge. Just a gorgeous Burgundian nose-low key red fruit, char, and a scooch of green herb. Light body. Mellow, poised, ripe red fruit, and complex with a wonderful alkaline/limestone finish. Hard to complain about this wine, which has performed well above expectations over the years and is pretty much everything you'd like to find in a mature Burgundy at this level.

  • Garnet with fading. Sexy, smoky red fruit aromas. Light weight but real sap. Combination of strawberry, pomegranate, herbs, and soil. These 2002 Boillot Volnays have overdelivered for years now, and if this bottle is any indication, they're not done yet.

  • Light ruby throughout. Sweet cherry and plum joined by some cooler elements. Medium weight, definite sap, some smokiness, and fine acidity. Thin but present vein of soil. Another 2002 Burgundy with superb depth of fruit without being overly ripe. By far the best bottle of this I've had, and as opposed to the CT suggested shelf life, bottles in this condition should be fine for another 5 years.

  • Mid-garnet, brick edges; light floral nose; light stemminess, earth, wood; mid-light body; improved with air; balanced fruity finish; straightforward Pinot flavor; mid-tannins. Very drinkable now.

  • Medium red. Some smoke and ripe cherry. Fairly lush and fruit forward with a cola aspect that reminds me of New World Pinot. Reasonable acidity and a little bit of soil, nicely sappy. Large scaled and modern Volnay. The strength and depth of the red fruit are impressive, but Angerville this ain't. If you're aiming for precision, delicacy, and stoniness, look elsewhere.

  • open a couple hrs and decanted for 1 hr prior to tasting, nose is beguiling and full of soft fruit and forest elements, resolved wine with soft tannins and good acidity, fruit has faded some and is somewhat drying and less vibrant such that it certainly beyond any youthful qualities. Moving into that aged sense of burgundy, yet would have wished a livelier fruit body to go with the earth elements. Lovely at this place in time. Would not wait longer.

  • Deep ruby red with bricking around the edges. Classic nose of underbrush, earth, morello cherries, tart plum skin and hints of wood spice. Medium bodied with good definition to the earthy, sappy and sour-sweet red cherry liqueur, medium acidity and hints of soy sauce on the finish.

  • Not sure if this was a leaky cork or a too developed Volnay. Much preferred my earlier bottle - the fruit had flattened , lacked freshness. But still lovely balance thru mid palate and finish and no dryness. Too developed for my liking. Thankfully my last bottle

  • Ultraclassic Pinot nose. Charming and seductive. Oak, cinnamon-spice, strawberries and red fruit. A density that surprises in a Volnay. Almost toasted oak, but it doesn't disturb.
Medium-fullish body, Balanced toasty oak. Ripe and rich. Both red and dark fruit. A lot of indian Spices and sandalwood. Very generous but also balanced.
Tasted half-blind this was not a typical light-footed Volnay, but after some hinting we came to the right conclusion. A very generous style, that maybe lacks a bit of elegance. Perfect drinking window

  • Unfortunately this was not under the best of conditions so I did not get a great read on this. It seemed well put together, with good dark fruit and maybe showing more mineral and less fruit than I expected for the vintage. But reality is it was popped and poured and so it would have likely been better with some air and a chance to open up. A-?

  • Medium red color with moderate transparency. Sweet aromas of strawberry and light cherry with some black truffle and cinnamon. Palate is red fruited and on the open and airy side with strawberry, a hint of mushroom, some cherry, and a bit of vanilla on a medium finish. Drinking well enough now, but expect this will develop and improve with further cellar time. Drink or hold.

  • Medium ruby, primary. Exaggerated high char oak is about all you smell. This has good underlying tangy red fruit with medium body, but this is all swamped by the wood. Hardly one's ideal of Volnay. The only thing that saved this wine tonight was pairing it with a duck dish done in a coffee reduction sauce-this ameliorated the chocolate richness of the wine and played up the fruit. If you are tasting it with something less assertive, all you will taste is the wood.

  • Another 2002 that is open for business. Slight bricking color. Lovely complex nose of red fruits, earth and a bit of funk that blossomed with air. Very sexy and very Volnay. Palate is midweight and slightly diffused. If you are looking for rocks in your Volnay burgs this isn't one for you - much more the feminine plush style with fine and fully resolved tannins and a long finish. May not have the structure to go another 10 years and improve - so if you have any worth pulling one out to try.

  • Mid-dark garnet; flowery, strawberry jam nose; hints of oak, tar; mid body; good tannins, straightforward pinot noir on the palate; fruity finish.

  • Cork had signs of leakage. Gently decanted. Dark red with slight brick tones. Nose a little spicy. Bright cherry and still vibrant on the palate. Tannic edge to the finish, with a hint of meatiness at the very end. Good acid and tannin structure for a few more years but the fruit notes recommend drinking now. Drinking well now - esp if you prefer fruit as opposed to secondary bacon fat type notes that develop after a couple hours open.

  • The wine keeps getting better. Bold for a Beaune. Smooth, balanced, still adding depth.

  • Vibrant deep red color. Soaring nose with dark plums and cherry compote, underbrush, meat juices and minerals. Lush, broad mouth feel, with perfectly ripe red & black pit fruits with soil tones and smoked meat. This has the tell tale 2002 fat mid palate with reasonably good acidity. This is still quite young and will revisit after 3-5 years.

  • Another half bottle. Better impression this time. Black cherry fruit atop a subtly oaky base which did not obscure the detail here. Not as brambly or tangy as the last time, just some nice licorice elements to complement the fruit. This will need more time in larger format bottles.

  • Violets, mushrooms, lilacs, roses with lovely high toned red fruit in the background - very feminine pretty nose. More masculine on the palate with supple red cherry and a beautiful balance between fruit and acid. Paired beautifully with partridge and celeriac.

  • Half bottle. Robust, primary ruby color. Tangy, briary nose of sour cherry that struck me as very Savigny-like. Large scaled for Volnay, tarry black fruit with significant acid and tannin remaining, even from this format. This is just not what I am seeking in a Volnay in terms of its size and burliness. It seemed more Pommard than Volnay, so I dutifully got out my map, only to find that Chevrets is on the opposite side of the commune, bordering Meursault rather than Pommard! So much for "Guess the vineyard location".

  • From half-bottle. Quite closed down on the night it was opened, but really blossomed by the second night. Elegant and mineral, with bright red fuit and good acidity.

  • Tasted a day after opening. Earty and ripe dark fruit - very 2002. Compacted palate. Elegant, feminine wine that needs lots of time. Very tasty.

  • Got this bottle half price from my corner shop because it had some obvious seepage. Cork was sunken and soaked. Immediately with opening a blast of spicy pinot sap. Pretty on the palate, too, with a plush texture and mulled cherry character. Only wondering now whether I should roll the dice again and whether he'll give me the same deal!

  • The guidance provided by the proprietor Escoffier at Ma Cuisine was very good. I told him I had a hankering for some good Volnay that particular evening, so he made a suggestion of the 2002 Boillot Volnay les Chevrets (the last 2001 had just disappeared from the cellar). This turned out to be an excellent suggestion, with the wine showing the positive characteristics of the 2002 vintage—full and round in the mouth, nicely balanced between the acidity of the wine and its core of sweet ripe fruit. This was really outstanding stuff and I am glad I pulled the trigger on a few of the Boillot Volnay 1er Cru in 2005.

  • Typical pinot colour, decanted for two hours. Lovely fresh aromas with cherries, red berries and spice which also resonate on the palate. Perhaps som chocolate and oak but mainly spice and berries. Extremely well structured with a great and smooth finish. Ready to drink now but will easily keep for another five.

  • Really pretty, perhaps a touch more chocolate (oak?) than I would prefer, but still decent acidity and easy to drink. Raspberry & cherry fruits and a bit of spice.
