Vinetasters: (mostly) 2010 Burgundy (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Hint of reduction and some ripeness to the fruit here. Firm structure, mostly driven by relatively hard tannins. High acidity adds to the structure as well. Not as charming and fruit-driven as the other wines, this is a bit angular right now. My 7th, group's 1st.

Beautiful color, a touch of fading. The nose shows aromas of black raspberry, sous bois, flowers, decaying leaves and a hint of spices. This is medium full bodied on the palate with excellent concentration and wonderful class. The fairly long finish features integrated tannins and good acid cut.

Progressed in the last 2 years, mix of red but also some black fruit, starting undergrowth (sous-bois) notes. More developed compared to the 2012. Perfectly in the drinking window.

Very good from first taste to last. On open delightful dark red fruit, black cherry, blackberry, hints of raspberry, mineral, earth aka sous bois, underpinnings, floral notes entice. Moderate rich palate, balanced tannin and acid. Evolves with air to bring more mineral and earth along with more prominent blackberry. Remains nicely balanced with good length, clean finish. Excellent on its own before and after dinner of rack of lamb, Oaxaca corn polenta.

Drunk over 2 days: dark cherries, black berries, lots of earth and salt, a complicated year chez Gouges with wines quite reduced, this is still on the young side, but pretty good already.
Beautiful transparent ruby. The nose is tight; hinting at aromas of fresh berries, minerals, flowers, earth and pepper. This is medium full bodied on the palate with excellent concentration and very good class. Much more flavor on the palate than the nose gives away. The medium plus length finish features slightly rigid tannins and good acid cut. A bit shutdown and in need of some time before its prime drinking window.
was so looking forward to this along with some duck in cherry sauce but a flat disappointment broke my heart all pepper no fruit even the earth overwhelmed the second day nothing again hopefully this is shut down and will live to tell a better tale on another day probably should not rate this but that's the way it goes
Very nice tonight with lots of dark red fruit that seems to have brightened abit since I last tasted this about 10 months ago. There’s plenty of earthy, brambly sous bois notes, some tarry undertones and good depth. Drinking well with just abit of air.

Much more pale and fragrant than the 2016 tasted a few weeks ago. Definitely a bit of style migration with the younger wine having more fruit density and reductive funk. This was a classier drink, some fuzzy tannins that were actually mellower than expected.

Faded red with perceptible orange hues and clear in the glass. Open and highly perfumed nose with berries, , violets, vanilla, smoke, and earth. Same notes on the palate with prominent strawberry as well. All supported by supple and powerful acidity balanced by ample fine-grained taninns. Long mouth watering strawberry finish. Ready and open for business with a long (3 day at 4C) decant. Immediately after opening it was closed and harsh. It softened considerably after opening. 94+
Note to self: Don't open next one until 2025. It will be even better when it softens.

Nose of combined earth, berries and black cherries, on the palate earthy notes, tannins, good acidity, some pepper and salty elements, excellent density and length. Drinking well now but not at all on its apogee. You should have a case of 12 bottles in your cellar to drink them over the next 20 years :-)

Purchased almost six years ago. Another bottle opened in celebration of our 10th anniversary (don't say I never push the boat out). I always feel I have to keep my fingers crossed in opening bottles of burgundy; there being an underlying fear of disappointment. Not in this case at all, and Dulcie's critical palate pronounced it "tasty." Lovely clear garnet color, an ebullient nose of barnyard and woodsy notes. On the palate a muscular, tart red cherry, some spices of nutmeg, generous length. Good. Noting that the latest vintage is pushing $100 in some stores. I feel happy with my purchase.

Lunch & Tasting with Gregory Gouges (The Modern): The nose was intense, displaying a mix of crushed stone, savory red berries, dark moist soil tones, hints of animal musk and tart cherry. On the palate, I found silky textures offset by brick acidity, with a mix of red and black berries, as savory spices and sweet herbal tones developed over a frame of fine tannin. The finish was long, spicy, savory, yet showing amazing purity of fruit, which sweetened over time, as herbal notes lingered long. There was so much purity and precision here, mixed with a classic structure. It’s worth mentioning that this was purged from Jeroboam.
Domain Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges Lunch with Grégory Gouges (The Modern, New York): From jeroboam(!!). Light ruby with some maturity. A bit of funk and pine needles on the nose. Medium weight, some sap. Clay feel, brown spices, citric acidity. Excellent and long. It gets earthier but also cleaner with air. Neither perfectly clean nor objectively great, but also emblematic Nuits.

Mort du Canard (Dave's place, Banksia): Sulphur and I'm now getting a little stalks, slightly jubey fruit and earthy notes and some sweet spice. This is a little more sour than the last time I tried it. Still good with the pate though as this helps to lift the fruit up.
Drank over two nights - vacuum corked and left in refrigerator overnight. A fine Gouges. Showed both the purity of the 2010 vintage (which I like a lot) and the trademark Gouges earthiness. I would drink and buy this anytime.

Well, sorry but I put previous notes apply in error. Last night at Chez Sud Billy in Georgetown. Needed about 30-45 minutes to open but the quintessential nose of Burgundy with smoke, leather, blood, red meat and solid dark fruit. Showing no sign of age but rather very youthful with tannins still structured but showing signs of integrating, medium acidity, well balanced and a lingering finish. Nice mid weight palate, structured legs. I have had three bottles of this wine over the last 6 months and the key word here is consistency with each bottle.

Coravin fun - Plundering the cellar (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Savoury berry and cherry tending from red to black fruit underpinned by coffee, toast and earthy notes. Harder and more tart on the palate with just a hint of the sulphur note that I recollect from my last try. Time required and a bit 'approach with caution' for me still.

Very nice! Beautiful ruby color. Rose and spice to the nose. Red fruit, but no bomb here. A little bit of acidity to stand up to a salmon with a Pacific Northwest spice rub. And just a touch of the earthiness which makes me crave Burgs. I'd say it's coming into its prime but would still age for at least a few more years.

Decanted for a couple of hours. The wine at first showed quite a stinky sulphur nose, which did back off with time, although it didn't fully dissipate. Behind that, lots of plums, cherries and flowers, as well as spices and wood. On the palate, this wine has structure, acidity and length, and needs another couple of years to be at its peak in terms of the fruit showing.
Deep red and clear in the glass. Expressive and open nose with raspberry, strawberry, fresh forest leaves, and violets. Same notes on the palate. Vibrant and acidic. Really high-quality juice with great typacity. 93-94
Decanted for two hours. Nose had black fruit, purple fruit and flowers. Palate had good depth woth ripe black fruit with some rusticity. Oak was still prominent at this stage.
The best bottle of this one thus far. Really drinking well. No sulfur. Intense, layered red raspberry, with violets and fresh forest. Crunchy fruit and strong backbone. Compelling wine.

This is a beautiful Burgundy and it's clear that 1) this is a very serious producer and 2) 2010 was a phenomenal vintage, right up there with 2005, if not better for some growers. A little burnt rubber/smokiness on the nose (maybe a touch of reduction?), with some barrel spices, pure blue/red pinot fruit and a touch of scorched earth. Reminds me a bit of Chevillon's 1er crus whose wines I love. However despite the earth tones, this is clean - little funk, barnyard. Quite clean actually. The complexity on the nose and palate is where this gets me. Asian spices, pure blueberry and mulberry fruit notes, and a great finish, albeit a tiny bit closed. While this probably won't peak for another 5-7 years, it's still a great drink now and at $55 it hit the value mark.

A nice nose of oak barrels and spice (would pinot fruit be better??). Big fruit on the palate, dark and full. Finishes with more wood notes. Tasty, but toasty, and better with less oak notes.

Typical pinot ruby-red in the glass, and clear. Gorgeous nose with strawberry, strawberry, strawberry, and violets (also some vanilla and tar). Strawberry, red licorice, and violets on the palate, with a long smooth strawberry finish. Medium+ tannins, Moderate acidity, and appropriate alcohol concentration. The alcohol in this wine really seemed to help drive the fruit into the nose and onto the palate, without ever being harsh. Magnificent wine and, even at $75/750, an excellent value. 93-95pts.
This bottle was very similar to the one on 3/18/15. However, it seemed easier to get rid of the sulfur, this time. Immediately upon opening, the wine was dominated by sulfur, so I decanted, swirled vigorously, let rest at room temp for about two hours. Then poured back into the bottle, corked, and kept in refrigerator (4C) approx. 24hrs. Then removed from refrigerator, let come to room temp, and poured.

91-94. My second bottle, not as "pretty" as the first, but more powerful. However, here I can taste the wood and the drying tannins after about an hour. Huge floral nose, long mid-palate, the fruit is dense, powerful, strawberry and black cherry, with earth, mineral, and mushroom overtones. These now need to rest for a few years, but should merit a 93 or 94 score eventually, maybe higher. NSGs totally excelled in '10.

I was convinced by some reviews here to crack this wine despite its youth. Immediately upon opening, shows a ton of sulphur on the nose & palate, which I have come to expect for better or worse from this producer. Nonetheless, this has a much more full and voluptuous body than the village Nuits. There's quite a bit of earth here, though it's difficult to differentiate from the sulphur.
The sulphur finally gives way after 2+ hours of air, although almost immediately the wine begins to shut down. Still, there is a pleasant taste of sweet plum and earth that I have come to associate with the appelation.
Unlike the village Nuits which left me slightly disappointed, this wine is certainly complex, delicate, and delicious. I'd love to see where this goes in 5 or 10 years. However, on a tight budget I don't think I'll go back for more. This wine did give me new respect for the Gouges domaine and I will be sure to continue to try his offerings.

Deep red in the glass. Wonderfully aromatic nose with floral and red fruit notes. Same on the palate with layers of red fruit, violet, caramel, and perhaps some vanilla and anise. Long finish which echoes initial notes. This was velvety smooth with no hard edges. Very well balanced with respect to tannin, acid, and alcohol. Outstanding!
These notes are based on wine one day after opening. Initially, this wine was dominated by reductive funk. Odor and taste of sulfur. A decanter was not available, so I left the wine corked in the bottle overnight in the refrigerator. Luckily, with time, the funk blew off.
Splash decant. This was surprisingly open and engaging when opened.
Splash decant and it quickly coiled up. This is so raw and powerful right now. No need to touch these. Leave alone for 5 to 10. Maybe more. Hiding my others.

Located on a rising slope, the soils of Clos des Porrets are gravel, clay and limestone; the exposure lends this monopole’s wines intense nuances and a rich flavor profile, along with beautiful acidity from the limestone and a hint of sauvage due to the marl. Absolutely, no reduction here, just redcurrant, raspberry flavors mixed with earth, a good amount of minerals and a touch of Nuits wild sauvage. This was more round and supple that left me wanting a bit more structure. Popped and poured and after two hours this did start to completely shutdown.

Superb. I am loving the Gouges lineup this vintage. This is just as stunning as the Chaignots, maybe even a notch better if you're looking for a touch more density and fruit saturation than the Chaignots offers. The oakspice aromas from the pop of the cork are similar, but in this case they change more over the course of the bottle and eventually crawl into the background and bring a stony, earthen minerality more front and center. The fruit is rich and mouthfilling, almost grand cru in scale and in the way it wraps around the palate, in a deeper-pitched, blacker register than the Chaignots. This is amazingly friendly and delicious to drink now but still has a lot of gravitas. Hard to ask for more from a Nuits.
Showed a fair amount of sulphur on the nose, which mostly blew off after an hour decant. Sappy and compressed red fruits on the palate make this wine contemplative and interesting, as it definitely has the structure to age. Has more energetic and integrated acidity as compared to the '09

Nose- right away, heavy sulfur, distracting to me. Funk blows off after very aggressive swirling (some wine flew off the glass). Behind the sulfur was a similar nose to the 2009. Sweet floral. Ripe but fresh fruit.
Taste- much more balanced than 2009, due to the lower concentration of the fruit. More stuffings, higher acids, higher tannins... well balanced.
The sulfur was annoying though. It blew off after a long decant.

From 375. No reduction evident on pop and pour. Red fruits and purple flowers with a hint of game. Great acidity on the palate with sappy red fruit adding balance. Should age very well. Gouges has a reputation for being backward but this was drinking great right now.

Definitely tons of reduction on the pop and pour. This smells like green poopy diapers. With just a few minutes of vigorous swirling, some sweet red fruit begins coming in coupled with some fireworks. Palate starts out rock solid, however with some in mouth aeration things pick up some weight and begin getting very complete and put together. Impressive balance and structure. I can keep this on my palate with out any excessive tannins coming in. Only sweet ones. The palate is a little chunky compared to Les St. Georges, but I wouldn't know that if they weren't side by side. The finish is sexy, showing some initial attack of sweet fruits, but then the volume gets turned high as seductive structure begins building. Impressive spice lingers for some time after. I'm amazed how sweet the fruit is on this. Drank along side a 2008 Gouges Les St. Georges and it was very interesting comparing the texture. This didn't have near the laciness or body of the LSG, despite the fuller vintage. You can definitely see why LSG should be suggested to Grand Cru status. 92-93+

Very nice! Beautiful ruby color. Rose and spice to the nose. Red fruit, but no bomb here. A little bit of acidity to stand up to a salmon with a Pacific Northwest spice rub. And just a touch of the earthiness which makes me crave Burgs. I'd say it's coming into its prime but would still age for at least a few more years.

really good and very early in it's drinking life
burgundian earth and a great deal of earth on day #1
On the third evening the fruit was less prominent but the overall integration had much mystery
If I can remember will leave these alone for awhile

Light garnet red. Dusty red fruits with a sour apple note. Red cherries, some cherry cough syrup, some road dust. And a sweet cherry finish.

Strawberry, cherry, raspberry, violets, pine tar. Very nice, with good, strong backbone.

2 hours in the decanter
Color- dark red, ruby.

Green shit on the nose...period! The palate takes on a very different tone, cherry, red fruit, and balanced acidity, the rotting garbage found on the nose, (he says with love) is nowhere to be found.
