Served 9 wines for Easter dinner party. Couldn’t have been happier because each wine paired fantastically from appetizer to dessert while pleasing the entire crowd of wine snobs. I have left my rating for each wine below and how it was paired. I also recommend all wines on this list.
Main: Dry rubbed smoked lamb and oven roasted Greek style lamb with asparagus au gratin & roasted potatoes. 2008 Don Melchor (94pts) 2009 Luca Beso de Dante (92pts) 2009 Norton Privada (92pts) 2013 Bodegas Caro (Barons de Rothschild) Amancaya (92pts) 2009 Emiliana Coyam (91pts)
Dessert: Black bottom pecan pie NV Moutard Père et Fils Champagne Rosé (92pts) NV Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Champagne Brut (89pts)
Privada is a wine I had quite a few times in the past. When this vintage first came out I picked up the first bottle I saw in the liquor store. I’m so impressed with the way it has aged and can’t help but think it is peaking. If you have some drink it, if you can find it buy it. Either way you will be impressed and happy

Super oaked and almost bitter due to oak that has totally destroyed the fruit flavor. Medium bodied with minus acid, and medium to short length and okay finish. The bottle label says "93" which is more like a joke!

This wine has actually improved since 2012. Indeed, the average ratings for the last 12 months are better than those from 2012. The color is still a deep ruby. The nose is medium plus in intensity, with black fruit, mocha, and vanilla. The palate is dry and consistent with the nose, with medium acidity and medium (+) alcohol and tannins. It is full bodied but balanced, with medium plus flavor intensity and length. In a blind tasting, it would embarrass many wines from Bordeaux or Napa. This is a great wine for under $20, let alone at $15.

Last bottle of a half case purchased in 2012. Noticeably better than any of the previous bottles. Still a young-looking semi-opaque maroon in color, lightening only slightly at the edge. Lots of vanilla and a hint of spice on the muted nose. Full-bodied, rich and very focused. There's now wonderful depth and intensity to its lush plum and boysenberry fruit, matched beautifully by a vibrant acidity. Notes of fig, mesquite and a touch of oak add complexity to the long, polished finish. Rich, balanced and delicious. 50+5+11+17+7=90

Pleasant aromas of dark fruits, mesquite and spice on the nose - along with quite a lot of heat. Full-bodied, but surprisingly light in weight and texture. Offers a juicy mouthful of plum and blueberry fruit, with notes of dried figs and spice. The medium finish is very smooth and contains faint hints of smoke and tobacco. I would have rated this a couple of points higher if it had a longer finish and showed better depth and intensity on the mid-palate. Very enjoyable, but not quite outstanding. 88+ 50+5+11+15+7=88

After really enjoying some of these previously, the last 2 bottles died early and badly. I actually put my 3 remaining in a place for the banished. However, after waiting about a year, the bottle today was not bad. Had an olive flavor and smell that was unique to go along with decent fruit and body

Super dark, thick legs...loved the look of it. Popped, and was hit with a woody/oaky smell, with a hint of chocolate on the nose, this evolved into a more dark berry nose as the night went on.
Taste was tight, after a couple of hours opened up...berry taste came out and had a long finish.
About the same price point as the Catena Malbec, hard call which I would choose...probably still the Catena, but this is a close contender.

Popped and poured. Color is a very dark purple; this is a highly concentrated, teeth-staining wine. On the nose, there are notes of currants, dark berries, and wood-driven chocolate and vanilla scents. In the mouth, this carries flavors of smooth dark fruits, with a slightly sweet (and not entirely positive) element. The finish is slightly hot and then becomes forgettable. Overall, this is an enjoyable wine, but not distinct or memorable. 88 points.

I remember a past vintage (?? - don't know - before I was on CT) being better. This one was decanted about 2 hours before it was enjoyed. The wine was dark and very full bodied. Poured dark red with some purple hue. The front was dark blackberry, earth. The middle was consistent with ripe figs and more blackberry. There was a grit that started to appear here, turned a little purple plum for a second, and then finished rather stiff with a lot of tannin. I really think this one is very young, hasn't integrated yet, and needs 1-2 more years in the bottle before its true potential is realized therefore I reserve my rating at this time because it's quite a few points lower than the average. I do like this wine, and think the potential is high for this one being really good in 2-3 years as I think the height of this one won't be coming until 2015. Probably declining and done by 2019.

Blackberry, pencil lead, licorice and chocolate on the nose. An attack of blackberry, chocolate, plum and spice on a long finish. Matched with flank steak with salsa verde, rice and beans (spicy) with a salad. A great match - has the grump to stand up to the spices.

This is a remarkeable effort for under $20.00 in most stores - and $15.00 at Costco. 40% Malbec, 30% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is made in Lujan de Cuyo, and aged 16 months in new French oak. This wine is just too young. It needs a couple more years of time to smooth out and come into its own, with many more years of longetvity after that. Except that who is going to lay down a $15-$20 wine?? The nose is medium plus in intensity, with black fruit, mocha, and vanilla. The palate is dry and consistent with the nose, with medium acidity, medium plus alcohol and tannins. It is medium plus to full bodied, with medium plus flavor intensity and length. Paired nicely with meatballs made with beef braised in Malbec, served with a garlic aioli. The more meat and fat you can throw at this bad boy, the better. WE 93, WS 90. I would give it an 89 now, with the potential of 91 in a couple of years.

Intriguing wine for $20. After a ~30 min decant, this smoothed out a little bit--it was really rough on PnP. However, it is very young and rough around the edges -- tannic, bitter, and a bit hot on the finish. But there is also a very rich core of red and black fruits and a doughy quality that is interesting. The finish really lasted nicely. I think the elements are here for a wine that can age and really turn into something pretty special. And at this price point, that's impressive. We drank this with pizza (slightly spicy pizza sauce) and it was a terrible pairing -- really brought out the heat and tannins in the wine. However, this would be a much better pairing with grilled meat. I'm gonna pick up a few bottles of this and let 'em sit for a few years.
