Bordeaux dinner (Studio Neon): Savoury blackcurrant, rich but with rocky minerality, sweet spcie, very clean. In the mouth it's juicy, tight, grippy, drying tannins, non-intrusive alcohol warmth, blackcurrant, very primary. time. And (as we got to keep the wines through the second course) it does start to soften and shows slight black cherry menthol lozenges though the tannins remain fairly chunky.

Decanted and served. Not really needed frankly. Soft and with an elegance and albeit lacking freshness of fruit and a general weight of fruit and depth of flavor this is a very welcomed enjoyable wine. Maybe a few harsh edges too but overall a good wine. Good 89

Tasted next to a barrel sample of 2018. Less generous, notes of dark fruit, tobacco, spices, green (bell) pepper on the nose. On the palate again very fresh and still quite restrained. Grippy and slightly angular tannins, not really green but certainly not overly generous. Drink or keep. 89-91

Typical Medoc nose, cassis, violets and oak/vanilla. Evolves in the glass even after 2 hours decanting. On the palate cool, focused and precise with a nice balance and structure. Still age-worthy and will most likely mellow over the next 5-10 years. Very enjoyable and a well-made wine. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis), cranberry, vanilla and sandalwood. It tastes like red currant. The body is medium. The wine has linear texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

The Grand Tour - day nine (Bordeaux): Very slight herbaceous notes over savoury blackcurrant and brambles, a touch of farmyard for me as well as some vanilla. Juicy, a little savoury, quite wet, fruit is a little muted and the tannins are a little softer textured than I would have expected but are still drying and tight. Muted fruit persists. Pleasant.

Wine was decanted for one hour before tasting. Quite an intensive and, at the same time, elegant aroma with mainly primary aromas of black berries, but dark chocolad and sweet spices are in it too. Tannines are a bit dry but not coarse, acidity well integrated. Slightly underripe black berries and a lot of chocolate on the palate. The wine seems to need a couple more years in the bottle but it is already enjoyable.

My first experience w Phelan and I was pleasantly surprised. Consistent with other reviews this is a great restaurant wine as it is drinking well today with a quick decant. The wine is fresh and young tasting, with good integration from start to finish. Nose and palate are both lush with dark berry, mocha, evergreen, crisp mint and some wet earth. Very little in the way of tannin. A good value in my opinion and drinkable today.

2011 Phelan Segur 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, which is the same as the plantings found in vineyards, produce the blend. The wine reached 13.5% alcohol. 15% of the vineyards were damaged by the September hail storms. Fortunately for the property, most of the damage occurred to vineyards which were not planted. The worst of the damage was to the Merlot. Yields were down about 10% from the previous vintage. Oak, leaf, pepper, mineral and cassis aromas open to a medium-bodied, round, chocolate- and cassis-filled finish. 89-91 Pts
