  • Decanted for 1.5 hours. This is in a very nice spot now, red cherries with rose petals on the nose, very Nebbiolo. The palate is also about red cherries with strong tannins, very tasty. Could last for longer in the cellar easily.

  • Macerated with the skins for 15-18 days. Fermenting slowly in stainless steel until March, after which the wine is moved to age in oak. Aged for 2 years in huge (10000-liter) oak bottis (90%, all old) and small barriques (10%, approx. 1/5 new). 13,5% alcohol. Tasted half-blind.

Quite pale, translucent cherry red color with the slightest hint of bricking. Ripe, moderately open and quite sweet-toned nose with aromas of juicy black cherries and cherry marmalade, some turmeric-driven earthy spices, a little bit of gravelly minerality, light raisiny tones suggestive of a hot vintage, a hint of bay leaf and a touch of cooked rose hips. The wine is medium-to-moderately full-bodied and quite chewy on the palate with dry flavors of wizened black cherries, sanguine iron, some gravelly minerality, a little bit of gravelly minerality, light raisiny tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of smoke. The acidity feels moderately high, although relatively modest for an Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo. Firm, grainy and grippy tannins. The finish is long, tannic and serious with ripe yet quite tightly-knit flavors of black cherries, some dried red fruits, a little bit of sweet raisiny character, light gamey tones, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of gravelly minerality.

A firm, structured and tightly-knit Nebbiolo which does show quite a bit of those warm-vintage characteristics, making the wine feel a bit atypical for the style; the wine is darker, bigger and noticeably more ripe than a Gattinara normally is. Although there are some sweeter raisiny overtones to the fruit, the overall feel fortunately remains dry and savory, not jammy or pruney. Good stuff, feeling more like a missing link between the leaner Alto Piemonte Nebbiolos and weightier and more muscular wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Perhaps not going to be as long-lived as the best vintages of Travaglini Gattinara, but still shows good potential for future development. Also it was nice how this bottle performed somewhat better than the slightly understated bottle I had four years ago. Priced according to its quality at 21,90€.

  • Pop and pour. In the glass, clear auburn-red, slightly cloudy at the core. On the nose, tart cherries. On the palate, you know immediately it's nebbiolo because of the sour cherry/anise/wood profile - but there is nothing else forthcoming. on the nose, palate, or finish. I suspect this was probably at its peak 3-5 years ago. Drink up.

  • Took a bit for this to finally open up. Still has the red fruits, strawberries and cherries, but got the sense this was nearing its end as there was little in the way of secondary oak or earthy components. Suspicions confirmed the next day, the remainder of the bottle was about as neutral as you can get. Good, but not "Travaglini good" at this point; prompting me to start going through my 2010's to see how they are holding up. Overall Evaluation: B (86).

  • Great wine but drink now!
A great partner to linguini with chicken gizzards in truffle oil,

  • Pop-n-pour, quick note on first glass or 2. Aromas of black cherries, anise, and earth with hints of baking spices and minerals. Very clean and expressive, especially the cherries. Palate comes through with tart cherries and bright red plum with a sandalwood note on the mid-palate and an earthy tobacco finish with hints of tar. Smooth texture and mouth feel, love the transition across the palate. Not quite at the complexity of 2010 but enjoyable in its own right. Overall Evaluation: A- (90).

  • Clear ruby colour, with some bricking at the edge. Rich, ripe mid-palate. Some tannin on the finish that requires the proper food pairing. Will likely improve over the next several years.

  • Solid but lighter weight Nebbiolo. This had less tannins and acid than Barolo/Barbarescos so this 2009 was drinking very well. Decanted an hour with good results.

  • Tasted in a vertical of Travaglini Gattinara 2006-2010.

Translucent dark cherry color that seems to lack that slightly orange bricking very obvious in other vintages. Somewhat subdued nose, meaning that it lacks that aromatic richness the best vintages show. The most obvious aromas are ripe dark cherry notes, with the hot vintage showing through in the underlying, lighter nuances of blackberry jam, cherry marmalade and even a hint of dried dark fruits. Unlike the rather rich and sweet nose, the palate is dry and positively rough, although the wine's body is rather full and chewy for a Gattinara. There are ripe flavors of sour cherry, gamey meat and almost overripe dark cherry. The tannins are firm, grippy and very ample, whereas the acidity is surprisingly low and mellow for the style. The finish is ripe and very dark-toned, with flavors of dark cherry, sweet dark fruits, even some raisiny character and a little sour cherry bitterness. The tannins give moderate astringency to the aftertaste, but the modest acidity means that the length of the aftertaste isn't long.

Overall this vintage seems to lack that depth and complexity the better vintages show - I can imagine the grepes were harvested earlier than usual so that they would retain some acidity and also to keep the fruit from tasting excessively overripe. However, the wine tastes that the grapes didn't reach the point in the development of flavor they normally do, resulting in a wine that is more about ripe fruit than about subtlety or complexity. This is a good and enjoyable red wine and obviously a Piedmontese Nebbiolo, but quite atypical for a Travaglini Gattinara - which became really obvious in a vertical tasting. Probably this is a good entry-level Nebbiolo for people who don't enjoy the high-acid Nebbiolos of the northern regions. At 21,90€ the wine is more or less priced according to its quality.

  • Nice cherry nose. Easy drinking light Nebbiolo. Thought it would be more intense, but quite satisfying. Would definitely recommend it as a nice addition to your Barolo and Barbaresco collection.

  • Very light in color almost could be a rose it's so see thru. Smokey nose with hints of stones. On the palate is very light but tastes really good. It has hints of cranberry and blackberry with almost no tannin or acidity. Very smooth and good balance. Just a touch of vanilla in there. Finishes medium and makes me want to take another drink.

  • Enjoyed at Vesuvio in Little Rock, AR with Curtis Lowry, Elizabeth and colleagues. Needed time to open up but displayed nice acidity, texture and character. Notes of spicy black cherry.

  • Light to medium ruby color. Tar, red cherries, and spice on the nose. Lovely spiced cherry notes on the palate as well. Fine, ripe tannins on the finish.

  • Intense red and black cherry on the nose along with some oak and spice. Medium weight on the palate, again with strong red and black cherry extract. The acidity is strong, keeping the fruit fresh and alive, but biting toward the back (even on day 2), along with the tannin. Short to medium length on the finish. Nice wine for it's level, rather intense now I'd try again in 2019.

  • Moins oxydé, moins vieux dans sa forme et plus ferme , mais un résidu d'odeur de TCA qui ne veut pas s'effacer malgré l'oxygénation.
    Défectueux ou pas fameux...Au choix.

  • Classic Gattinara- cherries, tar, and leather with noticeable earthy tannins and anise from the oak. Plenty of good acidity, but the tannins are still raw and youthful, lending a rustic edge I really enjoy. A few more years of rest will allow time for better integration and hopefully some nice development. I took a bath on this at $35 from Hope Valley Bottle Shop due to summer shipping restrictions but hey why not help the small businesses when I can.

  • Red berry, dried cherry, mineral, nut and leather nose. Medium bodied with dry and astringent tannins. Okay finish; better in 5+ years.

  • Mursteinsrød lys farge. Syrlig. Lettdrikkelig. Ikke så fyldig, men mye smak allikevel. Litt tanniner på slutten. Litt lite kompleks og spennende for å få høyere skår. Slik jeg husker 2008-årgangen var den bedre.
