Elegant nose of red and black fruit, touch of spice and meat. Carried through to the palate with some earthy notes and blue fruit. Great balance and length. Not the Leroy fireworks I love, but quite enjoyable.

The CFO's Birthday: Not very giving tonight. Dark, brooding, powerful wine that didn't open up. Not a generously perfumed or seductive wine. A privilege to drink, but clearly needs time.

Great perfume of rose petals, smoke, berry and spiced plum. It is sweet, luscious and deep, building through the palate and finishing with strength and stoniness.
This bottle is very backward. The nose is completely muted upon opening. After 1 hour in the decanter, the nose has some herbs and sweet black fruit but lacks the leroy floralness. Palate expresses more, but for a 99 leroy, i would expect more density and intensity. Give this another 5-7 years. Very interested to see how it will develop. My gut feeling is that leroy 2001 is a better vintage than 1999

Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner with Musicians (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Small glass, brief note. Patience has been rewarded with this wine, which is so much better better now vs when last tasted a decade back. Starts with that Leroy perfume, who cares if that makes you certain this is from Vosne! Powerful and nuanced cross-section of great red fruit, subtlely and slowly evolving. Probably still has upside from here.

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Beautiful nose displaying decadent red fruit, raspberry, cherry, a hint of blackberry, noticeable sous bois developing but still not too strong, caramel, sweet spices, cedar, sap and mineral. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a love long raspberry and caramel driven finish. Drinking beautifully but will improve for at least another decade, gaining sous bois and perhaps grilled meat/porcini. Excellent showing.

My third and last bottle of this, each drunk about 5 years apart. This one was even better than the last and I would be happy to have another in 5 more years if anyone want to share theirs. Big cherry, raspberry, vanilla flavors, creamy finish, a hint of moroccan spices. Grabbed your attention and wouldn't let go. Remarkably, on this evening, it outshone the '99 La Tache. Winemaking at its best.

Drank the 99 and 00 side by side. The 99 was a beauty, that combined Leroy typicity with 99 gravitas. A very very good wine. The 00 was a more typical Leroy spice monster, and showed like many 00's do. Both were extremely enjoyable, but the 99 was a step function above.

Typical Leroy strong red floral notes, slight earthy notes. Decent palate but perhaps not enough weight and depth to be a true grand cru? Let alone the current very steep price tag, perhaps at a dumb phase? Will revisit in a few more years.

Drank this with Pacalet. A very minty and floral nose with typical leroy stems. It took two hours to open up. The wine had the rustiness of a clos vougeot with fine tannins. Drinking very well now but it was more like a premier cru to me as the power of a good vintage was not reflected in the wine.

I had this first five years ago and it was powerful and delicious. Today, some of the power is resolved, the tannins more in control, the secondary flavors developing and the complexity even more apparent. Beautiful aromas of cherry and wood, leather and smoke followed by astounding flavors of cherry, black cherry, vanilla, spice, more leather, wet wood, and a hint of chartreuse liqeuer. A completely satisfying drinking experience. If you have these, there is no danger of it fading any time soon and should last at least another decade.

Medium to slightly darker red in color. Lovely Leroy floral nose that is very deep. Not as primary as I imagined but the palate still took over 2 hours to open up. Drinking very well with great balance and transparency, wont hurt to pop a bottle now or wait a few more years.

The wine of the day in a very competitive field. It outshone even the already brilliant Bonnes Mares 1993 of D'Auvenay. Incredible power and yet so velvety. Stunning. 20++ points

I opened this before its time, although thoroughly enjoyed it. Nose didn't give a lot, even after 2 hours decanting. Maybe some black cherry there, with a whiff of something like yellow liqueur. Palate opened up and became more powerful with time. Tongue and teeth coating with a long lingering, 60 second finish. Dark berry, plum, maybe some toasty wood. Delicious. I think it's young. I'd have rated it a couple of points lower an hour earlier; a couple hours of decanting really opened it, but I think there's more to give. (And will merit a higher score!) Still a lot of tannin to work through as well.

Had some spicy sandalwood aromas coupled with sappy, dark fruits. It was a big wine but perfumed and succulent. It had great balance and whilst decades away from its eventual apogee is thoroughly enjoyable today.

A Birthday at Yann's (Flatiron, NYC): Deep blood ruby. Extremely deep cherry liqueur nose; black pepper. Palate is huge and pure; cherry essence. Wonderfully long with pinpoint balance. A fabulous wine. It's fairly primary, but quite pleasurable already because of the balance.

An Evening of 1999 Burgundy (IL Grano Restaurant - Santa Monica CA): Consistent with my previous notes with the difference being that this bottle had a bit more stem aromas. Black fruits, smoked meats, wet earth and spice. Rich, full mouth feel, sweet black cherries, pretty tannins.

On the verge of developing secondary aromas. Lovely nose of black fruits, smoked meats, wet earth and spice. Rich, full mouth feel, sweet black cherries, pretty tannins and solid backbone that will continue to carry this for years to come. You can start popping these now for sure.

Had this wine with kobe steak. This wine was not decanted and was opened about an hour before dinner. Aromas of earth, spice, rose petals, red fruits emerged in the glass 30 minutes after pouring. Big, rich, concentrated flavors of red fruits, tea, earth. The wine was still tannic and would require more time to actualize its full potential.

A benchmark Burgundy for me. From the very first whiff in the glass, I knew this would be a treat. Beyond a treat. This could be the Burgundy that triggered that manic streak living inside all Pinot lovers; it might be the Burgundy that causes me to ruin my life and leave my family behind. The nose was astonishing: bright red cherry, a touch of raspberry, underscores of strawberry, then back to cherry again. Fighting for center stage were the earthy notes, forest floor, minerals, spice, a level of complexity that I have yet to encounter in Pinot. In the mouth, the swirling embodiment of the iron fist in the velvet glove. The elegance, balance, and stunningly velvety texture rode a wave of immense power. The red cherry fruit, sometimes veering toward cherry pie, lit up the palate, carving a boulevard down your tongue that allowed a world of complexity to follow: spice, earth, minerals, more that I can't quite properly quantify. Racy acidity that was not harsh. Long finish that never seemed to end, leaving a wake of fruit from the wine that twirled again into the sea of complex flavors. There is nothing simple about this wine, yet it so eminently drinkable. After being open a couple hours, it started to close down. The fruit became somewhat more reticent and, more noticeably, the tannins started to flex their considerable muscle on the finish. But this is a glorious, defining wine. One of the best I have ever drunk. A+

Acker Pre-Auction tasting (New York, NY): Lots of red and black fruit with huge spicebox. If served blind, I'd certainly have known this Leroy. Moderate length and power right now, I'd expect it to be better with more cellar time.

Grand Cru Burgundy Dinner (Troquet, Boston): Even though it was toward the end of the tasting and all the palates were growing fatigued, we could all tell that this was a truly delicious wine. Drinking well even at this young age, the wine had a clarity of flavor and aroma along with a bracing acidity that was beautiful and refreshing. I personally had never had a CV that knocked me off my feet but this one came close. I would be unafraid to serve it to anyone. Could match with food or go it alone. Great balance and clarity. This is great now and can only get better. I'd try another one (if I can get another) in about 5 years.
