A lovely Richebourg which is at its peak. Very refined, elegant, smooth, fresh silky. Not quite the concentration or the complexity of a 05 La Tâche drunk on the same day, but it is deliciously juicy with a satin like texture and a rather nice length considering the relative weakness of the vintage.

The tanning of this bottle has not been well integrated. The concentration is good. Aroma of moist forest, cinnamon, bay leaves. Compared with 2017 DRC Richebourg, it is more classical. But as time goes by, the tanning drops badly.

Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2017, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): First of two bottles tasted over lunch. Fully mature aromas and flavors were so mature that I would have thought it from an underripe vintage in the 1980s if served blind. Which is not to say it is bad, just very advanced, even while still showing lots of red cherry and baking spice that I would expect from Vosne. Good weight and length. Second bottle was quite different....

Delicate spices, subtle sandalwood, small forest berries, ferns, pine, etc...lots of subtlety and complexity; silky elegant palate, slightly elevated acidity but not too much; lovely wine, so interesting to see the polar opposite in the '03. Zachy's Burg Wine Dinner at AOC.

Domaine Romanee Conti Lunch (Phoenix, AZ USA): In a lineup of 7 DRC reds, this one generated the most discussion. Opinions were all over the map, the least consensus of any of the wines - except we all agreed the aroma was phenomenal.
My take was the aroma was soaring and magnificent, with classic Vosne spice and rose petals. The palate started with sweet fruit, but it fell a bit flat in comparison to the aromas. With air some astringency emerged and detracted from the experience.
If the astringent/green notes go away with time, this could be a top vintage for DRC Richebourg. However, that's quite an expensive gamble at today's prices, and I'd rather drink the seamless 2000 RSV served beside it.

01920/11446. What a classic Richebourg, third time tasting this wine, even better than the previous two. Much more resolved greeness than I remembered, lacy, compact, stemmy, so attractive. 95

The spice on this is multidimensional and wonderful, and it carries through to every part of the wine from nose to finish (which lasts a long time and almost seems to get spicier 20 seconds later). Most of my score is because of the spice. On the nose, there's also a meat/pepper quality that kind of reminds me of a good N Rhone syrah, and it sits on top of cherries/earth. Really interesting stuff, and really good.

Doesn’t have the aromatic high notes of the La Tâche of the same vintage last month, but is every bit a detailed, stemmy, floral, and especially spicy DRC. Shows the domaine signature of florals atop the black cherry and oak polish very well, and shows Richebourg spice and pepper very well. A particular liquorice spice. Quite muscular and powerful but never overbearing, and always complimented with a detailed note somewhere along the spectrum to keep it complex. Very enjoyable.

In a Galaxy Far, Far Away - Richebourg ! (Vancouver, BC, Canada): Light colour with a feral black currant, coffee bean and asparagus nose. Palate an overwhelming savoury herbaceousness suppressing a subtle alpine strawberry base. So-called “‘green meenies” are in the room with this glass-first described in detail by Bill Nanson and this bottle nowhere near the affectations seen in 2004 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé bottles. Finish of tart cherries. Drinkable now, but one wonders if this palate killing crushed ladybug flavour will ever ameliorate?

Hannah’s 1st Birthday @ MD’s: Well this is my first ever DRC and a controversial one for me. Endearing aromas of black fruits, black cherries, tobacco leaves. Palate of black fruits, red fruits, tobacco, cigar box, wet forest floor, with a nice warm finish. This is more finesse than power. Well structured and elegant. However, I felt this was still wound up and tight and could have showed better with decanting. Or is it palate fatigue after a great day of superstar line-up? Nonetheless, very happy to have had the chance to try this and very generous of our host today!

Slightly green characteristic of the vintage, but still balanced with stand-out acidity and beautiful stem. Savory, mature red fruit, minerals, alcohol, tea, tobacco, pepper, good florals, notable earth and prominent Vosne spices. Good structure to support. Broad and concentrated on the nose, this is drinking quite well for the vintage. 93

Pegged this as the Riche from the lineup easily. Not quite as expressive as the RSV or La Tache, but a beautiful, firm character with red fruits, brown Vosne spices, leather. Takes on a meaty character with time. Velvety palate and like the others, so smooth and seamless. Not my favorite richebourg ever, but very good.

Krug Dinner with Some DRC (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Open, double decanted two hours before serving. Superb spice driven character, unmistakably Vosne. Mature red fruit, but none of the bitter or green notes that I often find in 2004s. If served blind, I'd have thought Vosne Grand Cru from 1998, perhaps 2000. Excellent now.

10th Burgundy tasting prt 2 (Rotterdam, Netherlands): Thanks go out to Martijn for giving us the opportunity to take a peek at how the most famous domaine of all fared in 2004. The core is medium intense, slightly translucent ruby with a bricking rim. The clearly less developed nose offers medium-minus intense impressions of again the 2004 greens, but also red flowers and raspberry. At medium-plus bodied this is the lightest Richebourg I ever tasted –not necessarily a bad thing in my book– with nonetheless a lot of power, as witnessed by pronouncedly intense and smoothly textured damson flavours. The high-quality medium tannins and near pronounced acidity provide excellent structural integrity and while not very complex (yet), some calcareous minerality and typical anise exert themselves on the 40-45 second finish of refined, soft & plummy fruitiness. Although this wine misses complexity at this point in its evolution, the material is clearly of high quality. Based on what I wrote above, I’ll give 91 points and as for possible upside, I have to report that 20 minutes in the glass brought out some oaky caramel and gamey fur notes, while the acidity became more prominent on the palate thereby emphasizing the tannins. An hour later, balance was re-established, so my suggestion would have to be to bury your bottles for 5-10 years; of course with all the caveats attached to the vintage..................TN Mike de Lange.

This is more aggressive than the fruity DRC Richebourg 2001. 2004 shows us a very strong aroma of Richebourg terroir, damp forrest floor, austere, hints of tiny little floral scent. Firm in structure, well-balance, full-bodied and very very delicious indeed.
