Broke out this beautiful 1997 at the end of dry January - great choice - as this beauty is still drinking awesome. Elegant nose picking up white pepper, provençal herbs - surprising energy and mid palate berry punch with integrated tannins kicking in leading to a happy long, long finish.

The last of the case of mixed-vintage library releases that I bought after the '08 market crash. I will really miss these, because the wine was still alive and fresh, but clearly aged with lovely secondary flavors.

Coravin-ed two samples, but that was a waste because it turned out to be badly corked. Was going to do side by side with 1995, which was still pretty nice though fading.

Taste: Very well balanced medium body with smooth tannins and medium acidity. The tones of cedar, tobacco, mint, cassis, and dark red cherries blend well together.
Overall: This was showing very well. A quality mature Cali Cab that is drinking at it's best right now.

Nothing wrong with this wine, but it just didn't deliver any excitement. I bought this bottle recently and I paid a reasonable price for it (~30$) so I'm not complaining, but if I had bought this wine upon release and waited that long then I would certainly be disappointed by how it turned out after all these years.

Preparing to take this to a party, my wife dropped it and broke it -- 80% of it ended up splattered on the countertop. I did manage to drink up the remaining 20%, which was quite good, but it wasn't how I wanted to enjoy the wine.

The nose was dark and rich with ripe blackberry and cherry, wood smoke, and a hint of mocha. Unfortunately, this wine seemed to be fading on the palate as lean dried fruits gave way to brisk acidity on a medium frame and little else through it's short finish.

You should just break out an Ah So cork remover to begin with on this, as the cork, though maintaining a fine seal, was a spongy mush when removing with my best corkscrew (I didn't have one with me at the restaurant, nor did they have one.) That said, the wine itself was in fine shape, quite fresh, silky, and in a fine mature spot. Good drinking.

i loved it. we balanced and still mildly fruity ... just a wonderful 10+ year old CA Cab. For the money, it just doesn't get better than this one ... i do think, however, if you have some in the cellar you'd want to drink these soon ...

When I first opened it, I was disappointed. Brick-colored, not bad but not really alive either. Leather dominated the smell and taste profile. But after being open for two hours, this came alive, with nice fruits and sweet oak. Glad I didn't give up on it.

Popped and poured. Wonderfully fragrant, aged California Cabernet. As with prior bottles, the fragrance and fruit seemed to fade with time in the air. This one is still wonderful, but probably getting close to the end. Drink up.

Fully mature. This is a classic, medium weight Cali Cab. A classic expression of the beast, in my opinion. Pop and pour. Would not decant this wine. Moderate garnet color with rim variation only in the last millimeter or so. Straight from the bottle, there is black fruit and a bit of leather on the nose which are confirmed in the tasting. Very balanced at this point. The fruit, the very light tannins and the moderate alcohol are perfectly in balance. This is a restrained, though not boring, Cab. The '95 I had was much showier. This one will really pair well with food. Moderate- to long-finish of around 45 seconds.
Had a window of about 2-3 hours after opening where it seemed to get a bit out of balance with the fruit and tannins blowing off and only the alcohol remaining. But after a while longer I no longer noticed this imbalance. Could have just been me, but others seemed to notice it as well.
A good example of a well-aged California Cab. Can't think of too many alternatives at this price point for drinking today that are this balanced.

Tasted side-by-side with Cinnabar '97. This one is the better of the two ... much smoother around the corners and overall a better drinking wine
The Burgess retained its complex palette while aging the roughness off the corners ... this was better when young than now ... a mistaken aged cabernet but still better than the Cinnabar

Had this with a rib roast dinner with Steph and Ernie Chu. Decanted for ~30 min. Translucent purple. Really nice aromas of currant and blackberry, mint, slight earth, leather, and eucalyptus. Palate follows but really nicely balanced and seamless in texture. Nice acidity with some mild tannins give the wine structure. Elegant, complex and yet subtle. Really went nicely with the rib roast.

Very nice Bordeaux style Cal-cab blend. Smooth, no bite. Light (but not lightweight). Decanted (briefly) and it was ready to drink. I don't think this bottle has a long future. Just fine now. Drink up.

Actually purchased this at Wines till Sold out for $25. Nice translucent purple. Initially sweet blueberry/blackberry aroms that quickly shut down. After ~1 hr in the decanter, nice elegant but subtle aromas of blueberries, ripe blackberries and currents on top with an undercurrent of earth, mint and eucalyptus. Nice black cherries, ripe blackberries, currants giving way to cedar, earth, and herbs. Nice finish of fruit, earth, and herbs mixing together. Medium bodied, elegant with good acidity and some fine tannins. I think this may still be shut down a bit and needs more time. But still pretty tasty. 1997 was supposed to be a nice vintage in Napa. 13% abv.

Not my favorite vintage of Burgess Cab (that would be 1996) but still very nice. Presents more like a left bank Bordeaux than a Cali Cab (this is a good thing). Decent acidity and still suprisingly tannic. I can't help but feel that this is just a tad austere. 1997 was a flash in the pan vintage in my opinion and every Cali Cab that I've had from that vintage the fruit has faded early.

Decanted. Enjoyed with a grilled shoulder roast. Dark garnet/purple, opaque. Nose of black currants, violets, mint. Very well balanced, a classic mature California Cab. Flavors of earth, mint, Kirsch, leather with a slight white pepper towards the finish. Nice medium/long finish with mild soft tannins. Improved over 5 hours of drinking. Glad I have several more.

Not like others I've had from other years. Did I sit on it too long? This wine was very soft and smooth. There was little to no fruit left. Absolutely no tannins left. Bright disc. Opaque ruby/garnet robe with red rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense currants, coffee, kirsch and spice aromas. Full-bodied on the palate, with full, sweet tannins and similar flavors as for the nose. Medium-to-long finish. Quite nice now. This wine has the fruit and structure to drink well over the next several years.

Medium body with a subtle nose of cedar and coffee. It’s a smooth, velvety mouthful with lots of nice dark fruit, black cherries, coffee and a mischievous streak of black licorice thrown in. Tannins are smooth carrying a medium length finish to a pleasant landing. Drink it now or cellar for a few more years. At $40 bucks this puppy is really nice.
