Exquisite! Poetry in the glass. Opened about 8 hours before and then decanted for an hour. One bottle left. Wish I had many more. In a perfect spot now, but no need to rush.

Drinking really well, although perhaps just starting to decline from its peak drinking plateau. Opened about 8 hours before drinking and then decanted about an hour before. A very pretty Barbaresco. Served on Christmas Eve with osso bucco, which was pretty much as good as it gets.

Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Opened and decanted for sediment and then rebottled. Such an interesting wine. The more time it was exposed to air the more that the fruit came out and honestly the more it tasted a bit like the Serafina Rivella which we were drinking alongside. This was light and bright but not quite as light as sometimes he manages with the wine. My guess is the regular white label barbaresco from that year even though there was a tine note about the Rabaja. Still a good wine and enjoyable.

Decanted 4 hours. Really good wine - soft, supple. Lots of leather and saddle, red and dark fruits. Medium in color showing its age a bit. This was a highly complex wine with a ton a nuance. Good vibrant flavors. Tannins well integrated. At peak.

Two hour decant. Pretty mature nose of faded flowers, red fruits. The palate is fully mature and in early decline but still delicious with red and black fruits, earth, and herbs. The palate is open knit after decanting with the tannins fully resolved but shows interesting layers of complexity and has a nice interplay of fruit and savoury characteristics. Drink up soon. It won’t get any better from here.

Bruno Giacosa Tribute Dinner (Casa Tartufo, Singapore): Yet another very lovely wine. What a knockout Barbaresco nose it had - rose and cherry, earth and smoke and spice, a bit of tar, a kiss of herb, all unfolding in a sweet, seductive bouquet edged with a smoky, tarry lilt. Wow. The palate was lovely too, rich, delicious, with thick dark cherry flavours, and then nuances of spice, tar and earth - powerful and rich with 1997 ripeness, yet still balanced and lithe all the way into its long finish. We had such an amazing line-up tonight that this was probably one of the the poerer showings - it was just not quite as effortlessly elegant as some of the other wines on show, but nevertheless a lovely and delicious bottle in its own right.

Drank blind at WWC Nebbiolo tasting vs a Giacosa 97 Barolo. Fascinating comparison, & easily the 2 best wines of the evening. (see my notes on the barolo, which most preferred). This wine had a wonderful nose of red fruit, roses and baked spices. Decent, but fading amount of red fruit here. Tobacco, earth, meat on the palate as well as fruit. The wine faded a bit in the glass I felt, leading to a slightly lower score. Enjoyable older BB nonetheless. I would NOT decant this wine

I think I liked this better in its youth. The mature fruits, and resolved tannins are good, with moments of very good; the nose, still, is the star of the show. Acidity holding, for now, though the overall energy seems on the backside of its curve. Still very enjoyable, and good partner to food, but I think I would begin to drink down whatever bottles remained in my cellar. Will open a 1996 soon, with much higher hopes.
Nick's four wine pairs: Pale red colour. I was certain this wine was a Barolo. A full peacock's tail of a bouquet, gentle florals, baking spices and dry tobacco, more red fruited than the dark, dark fruit evident on the Gaja's nose. On palate, a lovely Barbaresco, more advanced seeming than the Gaja. Clay soils, redcurrants and other red fruit and dry underbrush. Sandy, cultured tannins. Good acidity. Good volume and length. Drinking well now.

Brick color and suspect previous storage might not be ideal as the wine felt tired at this stage. Slightly oxidized but recovered after giving lots of air. Classic black tea and red fruit emerged from the glass but overall disappointing. Will have to try the last bottle in my cellar soon.

Decanted for an hour before drinking. Lighter color with the age noted. Amazing nose of spice and tobacco. The taste revealed hints of dark fruit, soy and bacon fat. I have had this wine before directly after opening and there was a clear difference in decanting. Merry Christmas!!

Pnp. The wine had more intensity and youth than the asili 97 probably because it was not decanted. I enjoyed the meatiness and the fruit profile of this barbaresco very much. The dried meat, tobacco, and dried red fruit on the palate were focused and long. The asili 97 was more expressive in relative term. A long decant would be appropriate if you consume now. Long life ahead.

Where the Aisli was lacy and impressed with elegance, this had the grace but with more power, expectedly. More menthol and depth, darker fruited and with a powerful almost meaty side, with some cooler herbal notes.Deeper and more impressive, but only slightly less finesse than the Asili. This has power and grace and all comes together nicely, in a more come at you vintage style. Beautiful and early peak. 95 pts

Slow O'd for 6 hours and was still opening up in the glass. Dried cherries, rose petals on the initial nose with a palate of tar, wet earth and plenty of acidity and structure. While it's not clear to me that will wine will continue to improve, it certainly won't lose anything for the next few year. Still have a few bottles and will wait a couple years before trying the next one.

HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): Loved the nose. Some dark fruit, dark florals, and earth. Bristles with acidity, this needed air to flesh out. With some time, I thought this showed nicely. Dark fruits, and earth were the real story here...some tar notes too.

This almost made it to the party. While there were still some attractive red fruits and roses, there was very much a soy-ishness to it. Sadly someone along the way didn't give this bottle much care and it was more advanced than it should be.

This wine decanted. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, flowers (mostly rose-like), leather, tar, touches of licorice and tobacco, herbs. Supple tannins are well integrated into the wine; soft and velvety in the mouth. Rich, intense and full bodied fruit. A long velvety finish. Consumed at the SAFW Reunion II.

Light looking wine. Smoke, rose and cherry on the nose. In the mouth is where it gets interesting - medium body, good acidity, cola, leather and a big mid palate. A finish that goes on and on. To me this is a benchmark Barbaresco - lighter and more subtle than a good Barolo. This is drinking beautifully now, but clearly has more years in its future

Not as expressive as expected. Giacosa is my fav producer, but this bottle just seemed mute. Not flawed, but just didn't open up with the expected fireworks. Clearly from a hot vintage, but not soupy or lacking in structure. Just beginning to test some 97s

I have to wonder if my bottle was off based on other reviews – Giacosa is obviously a legendary producer with a major reputation; however, I found this bottle to be rather simple and not too overly complex. It was decanted and has a major aroma of smoke, but bbq smoke, which I often find in aged Nebbiolo. It also had tart cherry juice and an earthy / leathery component as well. Tannins were soft, almost gone and the acid was a little spiked and a touch out of balance. I drink my fair share of Nebbiolo and this just didn’t live up to my expectation for the producer of Rabaja vineyard. Probably an off bottle but I am not willing to give it another shot due to the cost associated with this wine.

Ironically, this looked younger than my previous bottle, tasted over three years ago. As always, a nice transparence to this wine, but not much bricking - still rather youthful in appearance. I'm always amazed how at firts this wine seems like a moderate, pleasant, cherry-flavored, sipping red - like a decent Barbera. Three hours later, this transforms into a sophisticated, aristocratic dream of a Barbaresco, with refreshing red fruits, but backed up by tobacco, leather, and truffles. A chameleon with the right food, and a delight no matter how it's consumed. Once again: Bravo, Giacosa!

Decanted for 3 hours but things did not get rolling until hour 4. Ruby color, accompanied by measured but beautiful nose of rose petals, lavender, and tar. Palate was full of structured tannins until the end of the evening, when plummy meaty red fruits emerged and the tannins softened, leading to a wonderful last glass. These 1997s are quirky beasts but clearly worth the time and patience.
