Very sensual nose, with a great deal of pinot noir influence. This is quite bready with some almond notes as well. The palate is light-bodied with an emphasis on stone fruit, but lacking depth. Slightly astringent.

What an absolutely stunning nose right off the bat. There's a very big dose of iron and red currant, and beneath it all, a bit of damp leaves. This is absolutely singing right now. The palate is a bit austere and seems to be much more developed than the nose. Not sure if this is a drink-up kind of situation...

Very beautiful light yellow. The nose has aromas of sweet citrus and a fair bit of coconut. The palate has a very pretty vein of acidity to go with tons of fresh tropical fruit -- this bottle has held together very, very well.

This was surprisingly a lot more closed than the Corton I had alongside. Gobs of fruit, but this needs a whole lot more air. The structure definitely shows that a bit more time is needed, and it seemed to hide even more as time progressed.

This was stemmy and just exactly what you'd expect from a 2008 red Burgundy. Definitely on the austere side of things, this is nonetheless very, very good. Tasting this has gotten me to start worrying about the 08s though -- with some age and the fruit fading away, what will be left besides the massive structure?

A very stemmy nose that just sings old Bordeaux. Very svelte and restrained and excellent now. Lovely.

Sadly, weak and tired. There used to be something, but there isn't much left.

#32-04, 7% abv. This one has a relatively muted nose -- not showing too much, despite the long air time I gave it. This is very sweet (a la candied pineapple) and stony on the palate, but missing the acidic cut that you want. Somehow, though, this never gets cloying.

A bit tired but a classic Napa cab nose. A bit of fruit shows up, but faintly. The palate is still surprisingly tannic and leathery, and a lot of the excitement has since faded.

Very, very explosive nose with lots of dark ripe fruit. Overextracted and too much oak.

#06-13, 9% abv. Yes, yes, a hundred times yes. Incredible fruit and mineral, power and density. Lychee juice. There's so much fruit here that the racy 2012 acidity has been hidden behind it all. At the same time, there's a lot of mineral extract that dries out your mouth in the way tannins might. So damn good.

NV Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Champagne Blanc de Blancs 88 Points
France, Champagne
(6/27/2014)
A very seductive nose with some caramel and baked green apple notes. The palate has moderate intensity with a prominent note of licorice. Quite good, but I feel this is lacking a bit of complexity, and there's really nothing in this wine that's out of the ordinary. You can do so much better at this price.

2011 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel 95 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
(6/27/2014)
#15-12, 7% abv. From half bottle. Ok, this is a lot more intense and sweet than I would have expected. Knee-bucklingly so. The nose is just pure fruit extract: a mix of everything stone and tropical -- peach, tangerine, mango, passionfruit, pineapple. A slight hint of sulphur behind everything, but it's certainly not obtrusive. The palate is similarly intense, with the same fruit extract. There's also a bit of minerality hidden behind the massive cornucopia of fruit. The acidity is significantly muted by the sugar, but this is incredible just the same.

2012 Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Riesling Spätlese Faß 7 90 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
(6/27/2014)
#03-13, 7% abv. Very perfumed nose with a lot of floral notes, as well as a slight bit of stony white peach. The palate is restrained though the stunning 2012 acid is showing prominently. Lots of chalk and steel. Unfortunately outclassed by the sweeties next to it, but this would be excellent with food.

2005 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
(6/27/2014)
#17-06, 7.5% abv. From half bottle. A very peachy nose, with that characteristic leesy nose that you get from the Sonnenuhr. This is a lot more shut down than the Himmelreich that I tasted a few weeks ago. A bit missing in minerality, but this is signature Pruem. Needs much more time to unwind.

1994 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 93 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
(6/27/2014)
Screw the haters. I love Guigal. A very, very juicy nose with tons of ripe but tart cherries. So alluring. The palate is a bit empty however, and lacking a bit of depth. There's huge structure here but the palate is what keeps this from becoming a complete package. Nevertheless, the nose on this is just so damn awesome, I'd be a happy camper smelling this all day long.

(6/27/2014)
Uh... what's going on here? Wood. Wood. Wood. Quite ripe and some fruit, but I can't get past the very prominent oak. Certainly it's not over-the-top stupid, but there is definitely too much here.

2007 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 88 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
(6/27/2014)
A very classic Barolo nose with some floral notes and tart cherries. The palate is surprisingly accessible right now with the tannins not being too present. A bit loose on the structure and a bit hot. As far as this stuff goes, this bottle is pretty meh.

Not totally sure if this is my thing. Yes, the nose is true to type, but the palate leaves a lot to be desired. Tons of acid. I'm not getting much else at the moment... not sure if it's just me?

2001 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 93 Points
Germany, Nahe
(6/27/2014)
#17-02, 8.5% abv. From half bottle. So, uh, I guess this stuff ages. Perhaps a bit leesy on the nose, but the Donnhoff signature is definitely there. The fruit has receded a bit into the background, and this is starting to develop some secondary characteristics. A relatively creamy texture, this has lost what I would imagine is the acidic cut of youth. Can you fault this for being in the awkward teenage stage? A good balance of sweet and sour, with mostly floral notes dominating (I feel the fruit is starting to take a bit of a backseat), this will be even better once it sheds the awkwardness of puberty.

2003 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 78 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
(6/27/2014)
Even Fourrier is not immune to the awfulness of this vintage. The nose is just bizarre with a bunch of chemical odours that I can't identify. The palate doesn't hold much -- it's hot with alcohol though there's a valiant attempt to give this some balance in that this avoids becoming jammy and overripe. Pretty awful.

1975 Château Coutet Barsac 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
(6/27/2014)
Moderate golden colour. A bit of burnt rubber and sulphur on the nose, but besides that, there is that classic note of marmalade. The palate is where this really shines through, where it feels like you've been smacked with a giant jar of bitter orange marmalade. Only of moderate sweetness, it's the bitterness that keeps this bottle together. Very nice.

1976 Weingut Leo Schwab Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg Riesling Auslese 90 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
(6/27/2014)
#05-77, 10% abv. Advanced gold colour. A good amount of mustiness on the nose and palate, which requires lots of air to blow away, upon which you get a lot of spice. This is a really funky bottle of riesling. Very restrained sweetness (they certainly don't make Auslese like that anymore). The palate shows a bit of stewed stone fruit, but this is very good.

1999 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 90 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
(6/27/2014)
I love the aromatics on this. Slightly spicy, meaty, and a good dose of red fruit. The palate has some ripe fruit and black pepper but a good wallop of acidity. This is in a very good spot right now.

2003 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Monts-Luisants Blanc 85 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
(6/27/2014)
A very strong whiff of sweet sulphur on the nose (almost Coche-like in its popcorn quality). But that's where the comparison ends. The oak's a bit overpowering on the palate, and there's a lot of sweetness to it -- showing the vintage character perhaps? Quite intense, but it's unfortunately all dominated by oak vanilla. Would be a great wine if there were more stone and mineral quality to hold it together.

2001 Alois Kracher Welschriesling TBA #8 Zwischen den Seen Flawed
Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
(6/27/2014)
Light amber colour. Has the viscosity of motor oil. I think that this bottle was slightly corked -- the nose had a pretty odd odour. The palate had the typical intensity that you'd expect from a Kracher wine, but the nose was just a bit too off-putting.

2004 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 73 Points

Not my thing. Aromas of baked apples. The palate is somewhat thin and very, very bitter (from the oak?), and I really didn't get much else out of it.

2000 Les Forts de Latour 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
(6/27/2014)
A very lovely nose that just screams Bordeaux. This has got to be the archetype. Stems, cassis, leather, graphite, what more could you ask for? The palate has a bit of everything and the tannic structure has already become a bit more yielding. This is surprisingly accessible now, and certainly won't be getting worse anytime soon.
