  • ESTG does Cornas and St. Joseph (Newcastle, WA): Fairly lifted nose with some VA. Tart. Sweet and sour palate, brambly, Nice acidity, fairly direct and focused wine.

  • Mature red color, slighty brownish/reddish, super nose, on the palate cherry, game, nice acidity, very long.

  • Robe violet dense;
    Bouquet au départ principalement sur la tapenade d'olive noire... P-ê même un peu trop. Le temps adouci l'ensemble, des notes de petits fruits bleus prennent plus de place, il y a cette dimension de pierre concassé qui est omniprésente. L'aspect florale est aussi plus présent & enveloppant avec le temps. Bouquet en finesse & élégance (une fois la tapenade assagi...)
    Bouche tout aussi top sur l'olive au départ... mais le temps est fort bénéfique & l'ensemble est tout aussi harmonieux, élégant & fin que le bouquet. On semble sur une infusion de petits fruits bleus sauvages comme la mûre & les bleuets, il y une petite note de garrigue, de la poussière de roche & de la lavande. L'ensemble est bien tendu, longue finale sur une légère pointe de poivre. Une Syrah for élégant! Excellent!

  • Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2022-2; Northern Rhone (@ WV): Slightly stinky, rustic bouquet with also beautiful fresh cherries and raspberries. On the palate juicy blackberries and cherries, laurel, metal, some rustic flavor and a pleasant touch of sweetness beside the good acidity and round tannin. The second day it was even more complex and lush. Truly beautiful wine with a great future of 8+ years. 93 - 95+?

  • Diamond in the rough. Needs air to open up, after ~6 hours open bottle, this starts to shine like a diamond as we know it!

Agreable

  • Coravin glass, enjoyed over 2 hours. Nose was classic northern Rhone, but wine was a little bright, almost citrus, vs what I like in Cornas. Will try to give it more air on next try.
    Bumped this after opening and trying on day 2, flavors deepened. Suggests this will improve over coming years?

  • Classic Coulet - thrilling at the get-go with a wildly intoxicating nose of funky truffle, earth, burnished dark red fruit and a pungent sharp edge. It follows on the palate, which is medium-weight and has a strong sense of brewed, rather than fresh, fruit and a warm affect - this is sensual, enveloping wine, hedonistic even, but it's also got a juiciness and lift. It's really beguiling and very distinctive and I imagine I'd nail the producer in a blind tasting. But this is Natty Wine™ and, with air, things veer over to the wild and, unfortunately, less pleasurable side - still good, at least for a while, but nowhere near as seductive. Before long, the veil lifts and what's left is a sharp, very bright red-fruited wine, with some natural-wine funk that creeps in steadily and without mercy, eventually taking over completely. From the onset there's a slight sense of the gour-de-souris, and that just ramps up and dominates as the wine rests. Still, fun stuff, worth the time and tariff.

  • A Spring Saturday at Dave's Place: Very nice Cornas clearly styled in the traditional idiom. It pours a deep, rich purple/blue. Fairly opaque, but in no way glass staining. The nose is if creosote, smoke, olives, blackberry, brine, fresh blackberry, fresh blueberry and cracked fennel seed. The palate has good acid and an olive and blue/purple tinged finish.

  • Rhone, lots of it (Chicago, IL): I'm told this was a pretty sad story right when it was opened, and I got to it about three hours in. There was no sign of that transformation by then -- it was a pretty classic Cornas syrah, with its black fruit and meaty notes. For a natural(?) wine, this is very clean, with no off flavours on the nose or palate. A nice streak of acid helps with the ripe fruit.

  • First bottle out of the 2012 case. I've had a few of the 2006 recently and I actually prefer this one a little younger. As with a lot of Rhone wines, age isn't always matched with quality and I felt the 2012 was fresher and livelier without losing the best elemnts of the wine - depth and spice.

  • Fairly rich and concentrated with good N. Rhone pepper and olive character. Not a shy or subtle wine but balanced with good length. Fun now, probably better at age 10.

  • Cassoulet at Bill's (Wilmette, IL): For a hipster wine to come in a SQN-I-need-to-overcompensate-for-something sort of bottle is a bit of a headscratcher. But onto the wine. The nose, with its vibrant red fruit and olive notes is gorgeous. It really draws you into the wine. The palate seems to be a little carbonic and natural -- there's too much crunchy fruit here, and even though there's a nice amount of minerality here, it's missing more of that cornasien black fruit and rusticity. A lighter wine, but certainly an interesting one. I'd love to see where this wine ends up with some more time.

  • For me a stunning wine. Aired 1 hour in decanter. Exiting complex nose of game, bacon, black olives. Palate has same flavours with an additional strong mineral layer. Tannins approachable, not coarse at all. Deep but at the same time fresh and weightless mouthfeel. Surprised how well this performed at a relative young age.

    Purpur- bis Rubinrot, erstaunlich transparent und nur mittlere Farbtiefe für einen Syrah, relativ breiter heller Rand; zurückhaltende, fast blasse Nase, ein wenig schwarze Beeren, nasses Fell,..;
    Auch am Gaumen verblüfft die Zurückhaltung, mittlerer Körper ('nur' 13% alc), leichte Säurebetonung, etwas Süße, dann kommen die Tannine, weich und schön fleischig, und dann - - eigentlich nix mehr. Der Wein bleibt eher leicht, unverbunden und eigenartig "oberflächlich".
    Die 96 Parker-Punkte von 2014 (#216) sind mir unverständlich. Allerdings meint er, erst 7-8 Jahre nach Jahrgang öffnen-- demnach ist der Wein vielleicht noch zu jung und/oder in einer Verschlussphase, bevor er sich in 2-3 Jahren öffnet...?? (Dafür spricht auch, dass Wein unmittelbar nach der Öffnung am besten war und später eher rauer wurde). In ein paar Jahren nochmal probieren.

  • Oeil violet foncé & dense;
    Nez intense, sur les petits fruits noires (mûres, bleuets), Olive noire bien présente, petit qqchose de fumée, aspect florale bien présent. Trame animale & sauvage en arrière plan. Belle fraîcheur & pointe de roche concassée.
    Bouche dense, intense, fruité foncé présent dès l'attaque. Trame fumée aussi perceptible. Bonne balance apportée par l'acidité. Très bonne persistance, finale sur la roche concassée. Léger boisé bien intégré. Somme toute élégant malgré l'intensité & densité des saveurs, digeste. Superbe!
