Very nice surprise and still feels younger then almost 20 years. Very expressive nose of spices, liquorice, white pepper, tobacco and a hint of leather. The now medium bodied palate has gorgeous fruit and balance, smooth tannins and nice length, beautiful bottle.
Gorgeous, fruit forward and very clean on the palate. Excellent balance, with depth and very fine tannins. Dark berry, oak, menthol with a long finish. 91-92.

Upon opening, surprised at the level of tannins. Not grippy, but certainly there.Dark fruit, leather, and herbs. Good balance of acids and fruit.
Opned up nicely with lovely notes of vanilla. The tannins resolved. Some sediment as expected from a 19 year old wine. Paired well with lamb and roasted veal.
Still has plenty of years left to enjoy. Overall, a lovely bottle of wine enjoyed in Lucca Italia.

Still dark, fading slightly at the rim. Nose of dark fruits initially moving over the hours to leather, truffles, olbas oil,and just a wonderful sangiovese savoury intensity. Taste wise, balsamic flavours with dark fruits. Slightly lean, tannin tea leaf like and well balanced. some mushroom, smoke and feral meatiness.

A strong wine that is both deep and youthful. There's a core of dark fruits, some licorice and plenty of meaty nuance. It has a touch of smoke, some leather, tobacco and cedar. It has good presence and chew and is very long.

At age 15, it is prime drinking territory, but it should hold for at least 5 more years. Deep ruby color. It had thrown some fairly heavy sediment, so decanting was a must. Good bouquet of cherries, prunes, tobacco, and anise. Sweet dark fruits on the palate, with tobacco and anise coming into play on the finish.

Drank at the end of dinner after the 1997 Casanova de Neri and 1997 Lisini. This one was just a bit more satisfying than those two, which were themselves excellent. Deep color, long finish with lots of tart fruit. No sign of being past its prime.

Opaque crimson color with brick hues emerging. Nose of dusty cherry, licorice and cocoa. The palate on this is very subtle, with tart red fruit, spice and a hint of funky earth. This finishes medium-long, with reasonable tannic support remaining. No fireworks, but this is in a nice place and is very food-friendly. Will drink well for another few years.

Ruby color with some light hints of amber at the rim. Expressive aromas of ripe dark fruit, some cherry, smoke and dried flowers. Full bodied with a silky mouthfeel smooth tannins, a great fruit and acidity balance with some of that sweetness of fruit that characterises a classic Brunello. Montalcino vintages '05 - '09 (Casa Middachten a 'Olanda): Another bottle in quite a short time. This time I let it slow-ox for about 5 hours. This definitely improved the openness and the body of this wine (or is the result of bottle variation... who knows, I still have 5 bottles left!). Hence one notch up from the previous bottle on 20/12/11.

Have had this bottle on two occasions now and have loved it both times. This 01 was drinking so nicely last night. Impressive dark color was immediately visible as the bottle was poured into the decanter and the aromas filled the kitchen. Upon first taste the wine was still tight but several hours later the wine had opened up. The usual dark fruits and full on taste of spearmint which was quite good. Finish was solid and everything was extremely well balanced. Wish I had more of this stuff.

Perhaps it could be considered an international style, but I like it. Strong brunello characteristics of smoked cherry, dust, and raspberry with undertones of tobacco and leather. Excellent tuscan acidity and velvety tannins, but also showed some cali-cabernet qualities of bold black fruit sweetness on the finish.

Opened and decanted. Followed over 6 hours. Enjoyed with dinner. Nice, deep maroon color. Nose of earth, and mushrooms and dried cherries. Merci Mike LM. 88-89

91-92pts. This wine is still very youthful. Nose was rich with ripe fruit and earth, but it took 20+mins to open up. Flavors are ripe with dark fruits and earth. Some soft spice. Most notably this has dry dusty tannins that too 30+mins of air to blend in. I would have liked to decant this for 1-2 hours before drinking. Drink over the next 3-5 years...AMM

Intensely dark, inky purple color. Needs a longtime to open up. First popped has nose of damp forest floor with a hint of the good dark fruit. After an hour or so, all comes together with nose of bright dark fruits - rasins, plums - and cassis. Also lots of fresh herbs - rosemary, lavender. Tastes melt away in the mouth - the fruits and herbs blending wonderfully. Nice, long finish.

From memory This was picked kind of last minute so only given a 20 minute decant... I found this overly pruny and raisiny and not overly complex, not a lot of savoury notes to this Finish however was impressive in its length. Hope my other bottle is better.

Rich, deep, brooding wine that needs quite a bit of air to open up. At first quite reticent on the nose and palate but vigourous swirling in the glass and 30 mins in the glass and this opens up to reveal rich deep fruit, black tea, meaty notes and some damp earth notes followed by sweet fruit. In the mouth tannins are low, the fruit is sweet and the wine is quite full and lush - probably not really a food wine. This has a fair few years ahead of it. Overall very good but needs time either in the decanter or in the cellar.

Finished off dinner with Pjaines with a bottle the waiter pulled out the cellar and offered us for GBP50! No notes taken but this was starting to show signs of life. Chewy with dark cherry notes, some damp earth and mushrooms as well. It was good, but not as stunning as the 1997. Will have to try the 04 now as well.

Ordered this wine with high expectations - it certainly met them all. Very velvety, dark earthy colour. Lots of tannins - loved to play with it - swirl it and let it roll off my tongue. The oak was subtle - the fuity berries were evident with the aroma of tobacco. I have 3 bottles of the 2000 I am expecting big things - hopefully will not be disappointed.

I let this decant for a few hours - it showed a inky dark purple color with nice dark fruit on the nose. Medium/full body with decent complexity - blackberry, raspberry, plum, chocolate, mineral, earthiness. Great with steak but tannins were not overwhelming. Brunello, especially when opened too soon (like this!) really needs to be decanted for a few hours and is best with food.

this wine is confusing to me. i think it is the third brunello that i have ever had to date. it was drank at maurizio's restaurant. it is dark and inky, nose is quite tight - minimal fruit and spice. sort of nondescript. body is light to medium. palate has some dark fruits, perhaps a bit of chocolate. it is certainly quite smooth and elegant and silky in its texture. it goes down with quite a light feel to it. finish is warm and elegant, but it just seemed so tight. i certainly enjoyed drinking it but i just wanted more. the other brunellos i have drunk were both very similar in texture and silkiness and light mouthfeel but they were much more expressive and much more explosive. i don't remember the names of them but they were much better than this. the first brunello i drank was at cesca. the second at a frined's pool party.
perhaps this wine needs more bottle age or perhaps it needed to be decanted but it just never opened up.

NM. 90-91pts.E.

Very delicious blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Touch of spice. Tannin is there but not obtrusive. Very food friendly acidity. Is it worth the money? Is any Brunello worth the money? A solid outstanding wine. Will wait a few more years for the next bottle. I would have figure this to be a super tuscan than a brunello.
Tasted even better on second day.

Medium-full bodied with smooth tannins, a great fruit and acidity balance with some of that aged Brunello sweetness. The finish is medium long and remains fresh throughout.
This wine has some classic Brunello character in a good, but not impressive, way. Well balanced and developed right now. I don't see much room for further improvement, but the wine will at leas last at this level for several more years to come. Drink now - 2016.

Pleasant wine but somewhat penetrating acidity held it back. Fruit forward and medium-bodied.

Shows good depth of fruit, mushrooms and soy, with a bright acidity to it. Some smoke, and licorice and vanilla bean on the finish. Not flashy. A well structured and balanced wine.

Solid Brunello, very typical. Without being spectacular, it is a very pleasant wine. Drinking well now, not sure it will get any better with time, although it can certainly survive for a long time ahead.

Decanted for 2 hrs prior to drining. Fruit and tobacco notes. May be slightly past its peak, though still very good. Silky smooth finish.

This vintage is now past its peak. I had very good memories of that bottle with super balance, fruits, tabaco, now it is evolving as you drink it even after 3 hours in decanter. Good thing is it my last bottle of 2001.

Nice and relatively mature, with brown sugar, red berries, soft tanins and a silky touch. A little disappointing in terms of length and depth but overall a very nice Brunello.

From memory
This was picked kind of last minute so only given a 20 minute decant...
I found this overly pruny and raisiny and not overly complex, not a lot of savoury notes to this
Finish however was impressive in its length. Hope my other bottle is better.

Robe assez soutenue avec reflects orangés
Nez : complexe, profond.

Tight, ripe fruit and wood on the nose, not expressive, as always. Medium full body, monodimensional, tart, with a moderate finish. Vintage after vintage, in my opinion, the most useless brunello you can taste.
