Asparagus Bday Celebration at ES BK. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, yellow gold colour. Thin legs. Fine bubbles. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty brioche, citrus lemon. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe citrus lemon, ripe peach, yellow + green apples. Sweetish long finish. Good stuff. Just feels damped down due to the side by side comparison with the excellent 2008. Slightly riper and sweeter with just slight lower acidity sensation, and not showing minerality.

Still young! Popping the cork - it's pure apple juice before settling down about an hour in. Feeling a bit linear day one and by far best on day 2. Still hasn't fleshed out yet.

Popped a few hours in advance of the WineBerserkers - Vilmart Zoom session with Laurent Champs of Vilmart and drank over the course of 2 days. Light gold, fine bubbles. On the nose, very fresh and zesty - green apples and citrus. Some hints of toast. This wine gives a sensation of ripeness, but this is a balanced ripeness - nicely matched with the acidity and a backbone of minerality.

Drank not tasted. Surprisingly light and elegant but seeing as it followed one of the best Chartogne-Taillets I've ever tasted and was had in parallel with a Krug GC deg 2017 it might just be the comparison. One out of three voted this WOTN while it came in third for me.

Disgorged may 2013 bought direct at Vilmart and kept in Eurocave since. Hmmm, after the last bottle of this I had a few months back I was looking forward to it but wasn’t expecting a knock out. This bottle did show better then the earlier one (note that first was 6/13 while this is 5/13 disgorgement). This was much rounder, very vinous with great integrated oak, a faint touch of vanilla. Lovely. Especially for the vintage. BTW recently the Riedel sommelier Chablis glasses seem to work really well for me with vintage champagnes.

Long lunch with Martinborough winemakers (Martinborough, NZ): Served blind. In magnum. Light gold with a fine bead. A fresh and breezy bouquet of lemons, wet river boulder, pears and apples. Only small flecks of toasty, lactic autolysis. On palate, fine and refined. Rich, opulent fruit, but not overripe. Pears, peaches, almond paste and a little brioche. Also some pineapple and other tropical fruit with a backbone of steely minerality. I don’t see the 2009 as a long term cellaring Cellier D’Or, as compared with, say, the 2008 or 2012, but it’s good nonetheless.

Disgorged 6/2013 - really nice capsule btw depicting what was previously the glass bottle motif of Cuvee Creation which they don't make any longer (which shows one of the handpainted glass windows at Vilmart). Anyway, back to the champagne itself - golden colour, very fine bubbles, showing ripe on the palate with a touch of sweat oak. Very good but less interesting to me then the NV Cuvee Grand Cellier and a bit behind a 2007 Grand Cellier d'or I had from magnum recently.

Served at a dinner party, so my notes are not all that focused; however, the wine was quite nice with a fair amount of apple crispness and good bead. I had this wine about a year ago and think the extra year in the bottle made a nice difference. Would purchase again.

Dinner at Alinea (Alinea, Chicago): Medium-light gold color. Ample mousse with pert effervescence throughout. This had a somewhat mute nose, with a faint aroma of toasted brioche. The palate was more full-bodied, with flavors of ripe stone fruit and crushed mint, all kept fresh by tingly bubbles and solid acidity. This has enough structure to age for another 10-15 years. Paired with surf clam soup, roasted sunchoke, mini cucumber sandwich and lilac salad.

Nose seems to be closing down at this time. Some flinty oakiness and a whiff of tropical fruit and floral notes, then it seems to shut down. Mouthfeel as always really satisfying w creaminess, lovely intense mousse and crisp acidity. Structure. Palate is oaky, long, complex. Lingers for minutes.

Enjoyed over a mountain of crab, so no specific notes other than to say that this wine worked well with the meal. No formal score since this wine was consumed as part of a meal. Good over all with a medium drinking window.

Lovely as always, but this bottle had some issues. Mid-palate dominated by a bubble gum aroma that hid the complexity you notice early and late on the palate. Not defect, I think, just bottle variation.

Nose: There is a finesse to the nose with red apples, citrus tones, minerals, white fruits, lemon peels, and some oak notes. The oak does poke through, but there is a real classy framework on the whole.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. The feel is polished and classy with red apples, citrus tones, minerals, white fruits, and a touch of oak.
Overall: This is on the young side, but it's very accessible right now. This could use some down time, but this feels more like a mid-term ager.

I enjoyed this very much. At first, you tend to notice the precise acidity and the fine mousse. A short time in the air gives the wine more nose w brioche, a little grapefruit and the palate is very complex and balanced w lingering minerality, nuts, honeyed floral notes and a lovely mouthfeel. Very good to drink now, probably even better in 2-4 years.

Cantemerle/La Lagune vertical (Dobbs Ferry): A pleasant surprise after I was rather disappointed by the '08. The oak's quite noticeable here, but it's matched by bright, ripe citrus fruits and nutty and doughy accents. There's a pleasant textural creaminess though it never feels heavy thanks to bright acidity beneath, and the balance is very good.
