Waited too long on this as the fruit has faded and the acid is dominant. Medium purple with a bit of garnet. Nice fruit forward nose of cherry and raspberry with cedar and tobacco. Palate is faded fruit and tobacco. No decanting and drink up.

Dark red. Cherry and cherry syrup and a little campfire smoke on the nose. Medium plus body with good concentration of cherry flavour. Rather harsh tannin, and a medium length finish. This sturdy wine will age a few more years.

No formal tasting note, this is a borderline expression from the Rioja region, lacking any distinctive character that would make it a better drinking experience. The nose is the only reason I gave it the score that I did.

Had high hopes for this because of the Parker rating and decent CT notes but found this to be closed and ungiving. Plum, licorice and loamy earth flavors can be detected but nothing too sophisticated develops. Had good structure - maybe needs more time.

First evening: Floppy. Better on second evening, fruit driven with good acid, soft and gentle but lacking typicity and structure. A bit disappointing after all the praise from critics. No Problem to find better wines at this price point (12-14 Euros) or even less (e.g. 10 Euros for Baron de Ley Reserva).

Drank next to a 2009 Marques de Riscal Reserva. Upon opening the Remelluri, you see a deep, dark glistening wine. None of the opening funk you sometimes get with these aged Rioja wines. You could smell the tempranillo. This wine is not exactly a Reserva. They draw it from vineyards in Labastida. It had an elegance on the first night that can be hard to find at this price point in a Rioja. Some wood and some leather, but not overpowering. Was closer to a bordeaux, than to an explosive Rioja. On the second night, it might have flattened a bit, which was surprising because Remelluri is known for wines that age well, so you would perhaps have expected it to show even better after a little air. Not on this night: the Marques de Riscal carried the second night. I am going to seek out the Remelluri Reserva, as well as one of their Gran Reservas.

(At Santaella - San Juan) Overdone in my opinion. None of the grace or elegance I like love about these wines. Bold and lacking authenticity - I did not get a sense of place. Food was great, but the wine less so. (84)

Nose is dark fruited and fresh. Very nice. Clean, ripe dark fruit flavors in the mouth along with some dark chocolate. Firm yet gentle tannins coat the mouth and dry out the finish. Very polished but lacking complexity.

Poured and decanted 1 hour before drinking. pleasant hint of wood on the nose, silky on the palate with good acidity. medium body with medium finish keeps inviting you for the next glass. Modern Rioja from one of the most classic "Bodegas"

black and purple fruit aromas. yes, modern and polished, but not over the top. rock solid wine, Labastida with more acid than the San Vincente. med/- tannin. glittery for as dark as it is. and all that's glitter isn't acid. smokingly drinkable. Does seem the Bordeaux'd influence.

Holiday Spanish Wines 2014; 7/4/2014-7/21/2014: A bit bretty at first, but that blew off to reveal a sleek, elegant, classy Rioja in the modern style. Silky black stone fruit, a dash of violets. Unforced. 13.5%. VGV.

Non-distinctive wine. Tried on 3 different occasions in the past year, and not greatly impressed by the nose, palate, or depth.
