Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of biscuit, sweet spice, red hued fruits, a little blood/iron note. Red hued fruit on the palate has a slight green underpin, tannins also have a touch of greenness to the them. Having said that none of this is out of balance with these red fruits.

Coravin fun - Leoville Barton; 3/8/2022-3/15/2022 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas initially show slightly dusty red fruits, a little mint...as time passes it starts to show a lot of earthiness with a pretty red cherry underpin and a touch of meatiness. Juicy, wet, cherry, slightly herbaceous, talc textured tannins are very slightly green. Quite lightweight. Hmm.

Purchased in Bordeaux over the summer and drunk for Xmas 2021. No formal notes. Had this straight after the 2013 Langoa Barton and the similarities were striking, but this had a degree more purity and deeper cassis fruit. Still quite youthful. A touch of mahogandy and cedar as well. Excellent wine. Scored at 94pts in the moment (the magic of Xmas), objectively probably about 91-92pts.

Sunday lunch at KC's (KC's place): Initially closed on the nose but, with time in the glass and some agitation, it shows blackcurrant, plum, a little cassis with a slight herbaceous underpin, a little rhubarb, new oak. In the mouth it's wet, savoury, fruit saturated tannins have the texture of coarsely ground flour, young and very, very long. Lovely.

Day 1: On the nose, cassis, gravel, and tar. On the palette, the same with some earth and dried black fruit. Intense minerality. Medium length finish at best, a nod to the poor vintage perhaps. Looking forward to tomorrow, think it will develop more fruit overnight as I didn’t decant. Day 2: Addition of some lovely florals and oak on the nose, with the minerality still holding firm. More vanilla on the palette today. The black currant and blackberry fruit is a little more intense, but as with the 2001 I had last year, the balance is exceptional. There is very low tannin and I would say it is at its peak now.

Coravin fun - Leoville Barton and new arrivals (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas are wetly fleshy, a little pyrazine, sweet spice, slight wet clay, muted red and blackberries, slight wild blackcurrant and cherry, cream. Medium plus intensity acidity, similar fruits are a little sour, touch of cream, a slightly herbaceous and bitter underpin. Tannins are chalky and drying. Medium length, oddly compelling.

Noch nicht da, wo er sein sollte. Viel Holz und Kirsche, fast Rioja. Auch etwas Kokos und Paprika in der Nase. Leichte Tanine, mittlerer Abgang. Deutlich besser nach 1h, besser dekantieren.

From Coravin. Oooh, a little mineral, austere black fruits, opens to reveal a little more generosity, brambles, rhubarb, cream, sweet spice, biscuit. On the palate it's a bit sour, with rhubarb and raspberry joins the brambles, the tannins are quite monolithic and dry out the mid-palate though the fruit does persist. Kind of nice.

Hmmm.. I don't think that this is all that great. The wine has initial depth and viscosity which quickly disapates while in mouth to a watery purple fruit dominated wine. Reminds me of a ripened oversized plum with too much juice and not enough fruit depth. I also don't think the wine is getting any better. Drink now.

Lovely example of Leoville Barton from a challenged year. As always, I find that I love Leoville Barton wines and this did not disappoint. Albeit from a poor vintage, this wine was powerful and concentrated, leading me to believe there is lots of potential here for future drinking. Also, perfectly fine to drink young (ageing more quickly). Lots of currant and vanilla, finish had a slight tobacco hint. Medium length finish. Very enjoyable.

Ooh, very 'Englishman's Claret'. Almost Burgundian weight, restrained, elegant, seamless. I'm not a very young Bordeaux person but this may make me alter that perspective. Brambly fruit and spry freshness; this went beautifully with poached then roasted lamb leg.

IMW Bordeaux Tasting - 2013 Vintage (Hyatt, San Francisco): Tastes like a proper Left Bank, which is no mean feat in this difficult vintage. A little tart but the trifecta is all there: Brett. Pyrazines. Slight cedar from new oak. There's clear (if not pronounced) black currant - it gives you some love on the midpalate. Barton is so reliable.

During a merchant tasting, decanted for 2h. Medium purple. Expressive nose of dark fruit, pine, forest floor. Good aromatics but a bit watery on the palate, structure cannot properly follow up on the nose. A modest Leo Barton. I actually preferred the Langoa Barton in this tasting. 91-92
Bordeaux UGC 2013 (Singapore): Ruby / garnet, still a fair bit of oak and wood that is yet to integrate, good but a tad simple for Leoville Barton, Leoville Poyferre clearly better in 2013.
UCGB tasting Bordeaux 2013 (Amsterdam): Luxurious bouquet with dark forest fruits, smoke, cedar and graphite. On the palate dark forest fruits and luxurious oak, bell pepper, firm but good acidity and sticky tannin. This is a classical wine which needs ageing, but then it will probably be beautiful. Wait until 2025. 91 - 92 for today.

Quite nice for the vintage, and it's going to drink well young, which is something you do not often find in Leoville Barton. The wine provides a medium bodied, early drinking, soft textured, cassis and plum character, with hints of cedar, tobacco and earth. A few years in the cellar should be about right.

Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux San Francisco. Nose of dark fruit, pencil lead, rich fruit, more of the same on the palate, medium/big body, rich and fairly forward fruit tonight, almost delicious, atypical for Leoville Barton, needs three years to peak, medium finish. At $75 buy a 375ml of the De Fargues for way more pleasure over the next thirty years.

Nose: white tea, dark chocolate. Palate: strawberry and cherry; lively. Strange bro, I found it less complex and less interesting than its counterpart (Langoa Barton).

UGC 2016 (Chicago, IL): An excellent showing for this wine in the context. Alongside a rather brooding character, there is a nice mix of red and black fruit. The palate's got what it needs here. Well-balanced and enjoyable.

La Fête du Bordeaux (Park Hyatt, Chicago): The last wine we tasted from the 2013 vintage (mercifully), this handily bested its rivals and was a consensus favorite. Crimson color. Most expressive nose of the bunch with aromas of tar, varnish, cigarettes, cocoa, and a faint whiff of oak. This has a full and juicy palate, with persistent (but not overwhelming) oak showing through in the form of an ongoing vanilla pulsation in the mouth. Though I would never in good faith recommend spending the $90 CellarTracker valuation on this vintage, this wine most convincingly argued for the durability of its pedigree in leaner years.

Using 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, the wine reached 13% alcohol and will be aged in 60% new French oak barrels. Licorice, coffee bean, cassis and dark cherry aromas open to a forward, classic style with an easy dark cherry finish. Unlike many vintages of Leoville Barton, this should drink well quite early. 89-92 Pts

Tasting Bordeaux 13-12-11-10 in Hong Kong (Visiting Vinexpo 2016, I finally tasted Bordeaux 2013s from bottle, plus earlier vintages): Overall, this wine comes across a bit too firm, with somewhat raw tannins. Compared to the Poyferre, tasted just before, lacks some opulence. Still, there is structure and depth. But we are talking about 2013, so good job nonetheless.
