  • At first, it could be taken for an old style Rioja - but after a while, it shows a style of its own. In the quite open nose lots of wood, creamy vanilla, fermented cherry, anise and maybe a bit barnyard. Not particularly tannic but it has a distinct, almost sharp acidity and a significant bitterness in the aftertaste - almost like grape fruit. Lots of fruits, blueberry, sour cherries, red currant in the full-bodied wine. This wine is NOT elegant but it has a lot of complexity and loads of power, so when you are into a monster wine, this could be it. For 21 EUR (bought in La Morra) it is even cheap for a wine like this.

  • Clearly modern style. Dark fruits, some dusty flavours, spice/anise, and a lot of oak/cigar box/vanilla. Nevertheless, a well made wine in its own style with good structure, decent balance and medium length. The mature fruit flavors actually carries the rather heavy use of oak quite well. Paired nicely with slow cocked Osso Buco and risotto. 89-90p

  • short tasting note @ l'Insieme Tour 2016: a whiff of cheese on the nose; also slightly lactic acidity on the palate, a bit sour and tart, but dense wine with lots of fruit and spices. - 88 points

  • VinItaly Day 4 (Verona, Italy): Done in 90% new barrique; deep extracted maroon; sweet dark fruit, slight roasted character, sweet, slight vanilla; fuller on the palate, perfumed, sweet darker berry, light on feet but good density; good.

  • Its got the barrique right up on the nose. Lots of sweet oak but not its not really a bad thing. And follows through the palate in the same way.

    Although, really, does it have to be done this wine? Well yes says the Fratelli. Massively powerful Barbera needs some new oak to support the fruit and the power. There aren't enough tannins in the fruit so the oak gives it that support.

    You like Vietti, why not this Big Barbera?
