Dark fruit, berry jam, potting soil, eucalyptus with a peppery finish. The 1% of petit Verdot hits you at first, the merlot grounds it and the cab franc comes in waves. This was excellent two years ago, and today is okay, past its peak, but in all a great wine still.

Purchased direct from winery after recently joining the mailing list. Signing up for the Cain Five allocation and I decided to give this a go. I didn't really take notes and this is from memory. PnP after two days rest from shipping. Nose of super dark fruit and bloody meat. Taste was a streak of tar with soft edges surrounded by fruit and a bit of game. Decent finish. I liked it. According to most it is past its prime so I wish I had tried it a few years ago. I have 5 left and look forward to drinking them over the next 12 to 18 months.

Really enjoy this wine. High fruit flavor. Has a nice aged wine smell. Not sure I agree with the CT window of 2009-2013, I think it is still drinking very well right now.

So the key to the cuvee is to not decant and drink it now. When I ran this through the menu a few months ago it was so soft and mellow and there was just not enough there. Yesterday I popped and poured and it was really nice. The acidity was a bit much for me which is not what I was expecting. The tannins were soft and approachable and the finish was actually 12-15 seconds. The menu decanter killed this the first time but for what it is it is pretty darn good.

Medium body. Not much complexity to it. Fruit forward with red and black cherry. Little tar on the nose as well. Shallow and short finish. Tannins were present but not overbearing. Decent but not outstanding by any means. Solid 86-87 points. I did not run this through a menu decanter because last time I did that it could not stand up on it's own.

After seeing an average score of only 87 points, I was surprised to find this wine much better than that, IMO. It was very dark in color, with a good amount of fruit, and the Petit Verdot gives it a nice silky finish. At this price point, it has great QPR.

Great QPR, obviously great fruit (mountain fruit here) and given just enough oak to make it "smokey". Lovely medium to full body, Bordeaux style goodness here. I'd say it's time to drink the NV9 - or hold another couple of years, but risk it being a little softer, and that's not my favorite thing.

Dark garnet colored, medium-full bodied, complex, firm and a bit tight, black berry and black cherry fruits give way to cigar box and tea with moderate lingering tannins. May soften and open with a few more years in the cellar.
Oh baby! This is my style. Light rustic nose off the bat. Definitely a little brett, not for me it adds rather than detracts. Real European sensibility. Meat tobacco, leather, black currants. Complex and enjoyable. Palate is more straightforward, round, and lightly tannic. Finishes a bit short. 91 but I really like it!

This is not from the spring mountain estate but very good. What is interesting about cain is that they do no inoculate with yeast but instead let the natural yeast obtained from the fruit ferment the fruit. Really interesting because every other winery appears to inoculate with yeast. Rich red tones on the nose. Lighter and it seems like the merlot shows through. A red that would go great with red meat and would pair with rack of lamb. Nice floral and berry tones on the nose with a nice finish and modest acidity and soft tannins. Just a good daily drinker.

Dark black red violet color; appealing, tart black currant, black cherry, blackberry, cedar nose; tight, cedar, tart red and black currant, green olive palate with firm, drying tannins; needs 2-3 years; medium-plus finish (53% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot)

Had this at Fleming's at the sommelier's suggestion at *$20 per glass*. Forced to drink outside the left bank and bitterly disappointed that despite their extensive selection of wines by the glass, they couldn't offer a single Medoc.
Oaky notes, a bit of anonymous and slightly candied dark fruit. Some sandalwood on the palate with a fair amount of spice box to it. Californian, and not a very good one at that. My first time with a Cain NV and quite frankly, I'm not inclined to have a second.
3/5 with food (am I being generous?) and extraordinarily overpriced. My first visit to a Fleming's and alas, as with so many steak houses, a poor wine experience.

Tasted a bunch of backside reds one night, including the NV8, NV9 and NV0. The 9 was by far the best, with the 0 and the 8 both being heavy in sediment and more tannin's than I thought possible. Lesson learned ... don't let a good value red sit!

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Clear, deep crimson in the glass. On the nose there is a good complexity with notes of black cherry, black currant, cedar, cinnamon, Christmas spice, leather, and cloves. In the mouth this wine has a bite and is slightly tart with a medium to full body, a silky to coarse texture. There flavors of black cherry, raspberry, and leather. Berries linger on the long finish. Overall great complexity and good integration. Cain Vineyards makes simply AMAZING wines. Typically I would drink an NV much younger, within no more than 5 years of the ageing.

Ok, this is still not a great wine, but it was so much better than the last bottle. This was drinkable and actually went well with my St Patricks Corn Beef and cabbage. Heavy oak with cherry and leafy notes. I almost opened this and poured it down the drain. Good thing I tasted it before it did that.

If anyone has it, use it to cook, give it away or drink it after you are drunk. Heavy smoky oak, with little fruit. Could possibly be palatable with food, but doubt it. Had once before and it was ok with an Argentinian cooked steak. Not sure what to do with the last bottle.

Soft with good earth notes. Fading dark fruits and little tannins on the finish.
