3/6, good cork (slight mould on end). Deep ruby core, narrow pale ruby rim. Nose shows ripe black and red berry fruit, vanilla oak, touch of mocha and clove. Medium/full bodied, ripe fruit, spice, touch of mocha, vibrant acidity, some slightly tacky tannins on teh medium length finish. Probbaly worth leaving for a while just to see if it comes round. Next bottle 2026ish.

Deep red in the glass, this is a velvety smooth Rioja Reserva in its prime. There are no signs of age at 12 years with only a medium-light sediment at the bottom of the bottle. The nose is dominated by cherry and some dark fruits. Body is medium-full with bitter cherry, decent acidity and smooth, silky tannins, all in the right proportions. At this stage, I'd expect this Rioja Reserva to hold good for another 5-8 years. Brilliant value!

Open for business as soon as the cork is pulled, this is a deep, velvety red in the glass with powerful dark fruit aromatics on the nose. There is lovely balance of dark fruits, mild acidity and soft tannins with a satisfying mid-palate of chocolate and a long finish. This seems in its prime with possibly another 5 years enjoyable life ahead. No rush.

Beim Korkenziehen fette Vanille. Im Glas Leder, Brombeere, etwas Säure, noch gut packendes aber beginnend schmelzendes Tanin. Etwas Schokolade. T+1 Kirsche, lecker!

1/6, good cork. Deep ruby/garnet core, narrow pale rim. Nose shows ripe red and black berry fruit, vanilla and mocha notes. Medium/full bodied this has attractive ripe fruit on the palate, nicely round with soft tannins, a touch of spice, decent contrasting acidity and a medium/good length finish. Not overly complex and long but decent enough for its level.

Red cherry, leather, barnyard, spice, a little orange peel. While juicy and opulent on the palate, there’s a rustic profile with saddle leather, dusty tannin, and 2010 characteristic bright acidity. Great value.

Back on the old vino after three days' rest with a firm favourite from the very fine 2010 vintage: instantly telling a loving story on the nose - a love of tradition, of the soil, of the vine and of Rioja culture. This is a wine of effortless grace and at the same time robust character. Deliciously leathery, savoury and velvety, offering up an impeccable balance between a lip-smacking sweetness and a nose-tickling pepperiness. Excellent. It still has a long, long way to go.

Medium red color. Aromas of red fruits and wood spices. Ripe, medium-bodied, fully-integrated fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length. Nicely supple and juicy on the palate. This delicious Tempranillo was a great match with my wife's spicy pork tenderloin.

In a tasting of six tempranillos this wine showed softest of the lot, but leftover bottles tasted over the next few days put on weight and grip. These will do some serious evolving over the next ten years--pushing the 'latest' out to 2025 for now.

Tannic, fruity, powerful. It did not taste as typical Rioja, but it has its charm. Pairs nicely with meat, also give it a while to breathe, it took an hour to open. Will come back to this wine.

Transparent purple garnet color. Medium minus body. After the initial attack then little mid palate, finishes off with iron-like taste. Tastes somewhat like Pinot Noir. Medium tannins, red berries, slight oak. An hour's decanting necessary. Finish is short & clean. No good QPR.

Standard traditional Rioja with nice balance and good typicity. However it falls short in terms of complexity. Would be a super strong contender among Crianzas, as a Reserva it's just average.

Will this 2010 be as some of the prodigious Viña Real from decades ago? I don't know, but it is well endowed with excellent clean fruit still showing primary, with some lactic notes that, on day two, cede way to red fruit, some spice and some good quality oak. In the mouth, there is a bit of grip, but it is rather some sweet tannins, both from fruit and oak, in a balanced way with the rest of the wine. Good lenght. Rather inexpensive (at around 14€ retail), it drinks better than its price suggests. Will get a case to see how it develops over time.

Tannnins have softened really nicely since last bottle. Very good window to drink now though will definitely last few more years.

Rioja Old-School and Modern Classics from CVNE (Chain Bridge Cellars, McLean, VA): soft. a bit tight/quiet/understated, but really nice. The mouthfeel is the star here moreso than the flavors, but I'm OK with that at this price point.
