Quinta do Vallado tasting and dinner (Restaurant Vanderveen, Amsterdam, NL): Intense and very concentrated but delicate and elegant, lovely hit of volatile acidity, hint of Douro bake because the oldest (50-90 year old) components were aged on the estate, Madeira-like tanginess, very fresh and vibrant, long finish with very good definition.

In the bouquet coffee, cane sugar, caramel, honey and vanilla. Same on the palate, chocolate, a lot of sweetness, walnuts, figs, burned sugar, some oxidized impressions and beautiful acidity. Overall very intense and complex and also elegant in a way. Impressive wine.

Beautiful, intense nose with raisins, smoke, caramel, dried figs and honey. Thick, oily texture on the palate, full-bodied, very sweet with extreme concentration, but with enough acidity to provide freshness. One of my favourite port wine producers. But honestly, I still prefer the 20 year for overall balance and energy. 16.5/20

Amber color, slightly brownish. Notes of dried figs, raisin, nuts, also some citrus notes, spices, also some other dried fruits. It‘s pretty full-bodied, sweet and has medium-high acidity balancing the sweetness. Very good length. A powerful, dense and sweet 40 year old Tawny. This is something to sip in small portions.

Rosinen, Dörraprikosen, Vanille in der Nase. Am Gaumen schöne Frische, gedörrte Früchte, Gewürznelken. Wirklich toll aber etwas im Schatten vom 1994er Graham.

Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Came to provide the closing curtain on a great ( and long) wine dinner. And it was exactly right. Bright and spirited but also soft and round with lovely silky texture and lots of depth. Light orange touch, soft red fruits and a touch nutty. On the finish we felt there was a touch of spice too. Very solid 93

Orange peel and candy cherry. Nice spice and vanilla elements. Sweet finish with nutty toffee and Cointreau. Really smooth and silky. Solid 40yr, but didn’t gel with me.

Excellent tawny! Was told the average age was close to 60 and not 40 as what was stated, this was much darker with notes of tobacco, coffee, caramel, salted butter. The finish was phenomenal and lasted for well over 45 seconds. This was so wonderfully balanced, silky and soft, yes soft! No hard edges just elegance.

This bottle was absolutely stunning. It blew away my previous scores by a couple of points. One of the best 40 year olds I have ever tasted. Right up there with S. Leonardo, DR, and Romaneira. Wow!

2015 Port Harvest Tour; 9/26/2015-10/3/2015 (Portugal): Bottled 2015. Dark amber in color, trending to brick. Wood and nuts on the nose, with some herbal notes as well. Intense orange marmalade and nutmeg. Bright acidity and extremely full body, with a long finish. A touch a spirit on the finish.

Amazing stuff. Have severel bottles but this one was a bit darker. It was a lovely glass. Rich and power - 1 glass was actually enough
