Book Club - Brig's Wines (Foretti's): Most of the people thought this was a syrah and that's a very good guess because it has the complexity, iodine note, spice, the bite and acid of a syrah. Complex wine but challenging to identify as his Zinfandel. That also could be a property of the variety since aged is Zinfandel is a chameleon.

Bookclub (served blind)--Brig (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): Tasted alongside the 2013 Bedrock Carlisle Zin, which was a fun blind juxtaposition. And damn it, I put both of these wines on syrah, proving again the humility of blind tasting. Why did I sense syrah? When these two wine were poured and we did the side-by-side, I could swear I smelled violets and blood, which to me was indicative of some whole cluster style. In the comparison of the two wines and the intuitive theme Brig assembled, I will write the notes together here for both bottles. I found the Bedrock to be richer, darker, the oak style of dark chocolate and brewed coffee. In contrast, the Carlisle Bedrock was juicier, with a weight imprint that seemed lighter, although the Carlisle did fatten more with air and was closer in weight with the Bedrock in time with some milk chocolate. Both wines exhibited an infused rosemary/garrigue (again, part of my syrah guess for both). The Bedrock seemed to have just a bit more complexity, despite the weight, with dark licorice and charcoal. Overall, I really dug the juxtaposition of these two wines, thank you, Brig.

Found deep within my cellar. Still drinking well, but i think i prefer these closer to 5 years. A big wine, perhaps best reserved for ribs, steak or lamb.

Pop and pour after being opened about 1 hour. Slight chill from ceallar and allowed to warm up. tasted with food (fresh tomato sauce with pasta, in case you were wondering). tasted a Chianti along with the Carlisle. God purple color. Nose shows VA and some oak and dark cherries. Dark fruits on the palate with a spice note. The nose is a distraction, however. too bad.
This was discussed at dinner with friends new to wine to identify the VA aroma.

Drunk over two days, with a coravin seal. Day 1, blue fruits, wood shavings on the nose. Slight muted palate, smooth dark blue fruits, bramble briary notes. Short finish, decent acidity. Night two, more weight, deeper fruit profile, much more of a zin like profile. Slightly hot and peppery finish. Very enjoyable and easy drinking but I expected more complexity, perhaps it needs more time ?

Very smooth and drinkable, but ultimately somewhat non-descript...as a previous note said, similar to a fine Italian red. For us, modern day Zins don't hold the same appeal as the old-school, zingy uber-peppery Zins of yesteryear. Totally respect Carlisle (and Bedrock, Turley) for their craftsmanship, but most of their offerings we've tried are more Cabernet like. Their legion of fans know what to expect, but if you haven't tried them yet, just be advised so expectations are in line with reality.

One of the best, most satisfying Carlisle zins (and thereby overall zins) I’ve ever, ever had. large sample size, and I don’t say it lightly.
This had lightness of foot with depth of flavor. Just the right balance of ample acidity and plush fruit. Perfection within the style.
Always an interesting question for me: is the wine driven more by the producer or the vineyard? I’ve found Carlisles can go both ways, and Bedrock is a distinctive vineyard... that said, this is a marriage that for this wine, this night favored the winemaker. There’s less of the signature orange oil dust I get from other versions (including Carlisle in other years) and more of the signature roundness with acid balance.
Indulgence. Yum.

Last of my '13 Carlisles. This bottle was a solid Zin, but definitely not one of the top Carlisle efforts. Among the 2013s we drank, the Papera was killer and much better than this, and the Carlisle vineyard was also clearly preferable. There was a slightly hollow aspect to this one on the mid-palate. On to the 2014s...

Deep purple color. Nose of oak and cherries. dark fruits, with spice and Oak. Medium tannin, well balanced. Enjoyable, but as others have noted, not particularly complex.

Surprisingly subdued for a 13 from Mr. Mike, more fruit and tartness which unfortunately could not carry the midpalate oomph, which to me seemed suspect and hollow. It also got tarty sour more sooner than I would have expected, especially after being open for day two. Wish that it had seriously improved by day three but it was already sliding. I don't see it being ad long lived as I thought it would be two years ago.
Spice, fruit on the nose. Fruit, savory, tar, bright, medium tannin on the palate. Finishes with menthol, saline, and some bitter tannin. Enjoyable with a decant, improved hours into the night, so seems like it needs more time.
If tasted blind, I would have thought this to be a fine Italian red.

Nose light, but spicy red fruit, tart cherry and strawberry. Taste has good balance, tart red fruit like the nose, tannins are medium with balance. Finish is medium with tannins that lightly carry through. Had with Ham, asparagus and bread, good match.

Vacu Vined and retasted with and without food. Dark fruits, multi layered, balancing acidity for the depth of fruit and young but drinking okay. Mike Officer makes Zins that are approachable early, but age well and to my taste are better after a few years to more fully integrate.
Drank over two days with similar impressions. This a very nice, but unexciting wine. It has God Ed and dark red fruit flavor and a very small hint of spice. It's rather one directional with little evolution. Feels good in the mouth and has modest length after-taste.

Definitely on the wilder side for Carlisle, with more gamey and rough flavors, but my oh my, possibly the best nose I've encountered on a Carlisle zin to date. Wonderfully fragrant, with sweet candied raspberry and orange peels, and a hint of chocolate covered cherries. Wowza, but yes I could spend the better part of the day just inhaling this elixir. Tannins are still very rough, at almost a sandpaper level, and the first sip after each pour seems somewhat disjointed in the front of the mouth, but it's got some great potential once it all settles down, which I'm guessing is 2019 or so. Grab four or more and be a witness to an emerging champion for the next decade. 92+ for now but definitely a long-term keeper.
