  • Brown at rim. Nose of underbrush, farmyards and mushrooms. Everything resolved on the palate including the fruit. In its dying embers phase, which I quite liked, but my wife was correct in calling this over the hill and to her it was unpleasant.

  • Flawed - dried out and green, a pity as we were looking forward to this with the turkey.

  • This bottle had more brown at the rim than the previous bottle and this greater maturity was replicated on the nose and palate. This was still very enjoyable with ripe cherry aromas and soft round savoury notes on the palate. Slighty spirity on the finish. Based on this and the previous bottle I would guess that the drinking window end of 2019 on CT and 2018 on the Wine Society list are both a tad optimistic. I intend to enjoy the rest of mine within a year.

  • Absolutely fantastic. Still has that little bit of green vegetation, but must be close to its best. Cherries and strawberries-an absolute delight!

  • At a BYO lunch, no detailed notes. Tasted alongside a de Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 2002. This was by far the most open and forward of the two ( not a surprise given the respective vintages). Very expressive on the nose and palate; ripe, round and elegant. Probably at its peak now. Delicious.

  • In general 2004 is possible the leanest, least attractive vintage of the last 20 years in the Cote de Beaune, but this Pommard from de Montille shows how a top wine maker can defy the odds. Aerated in a decanter for 15 minutes it has an expressive nose of raspberry, ripe cherries and minerals. On the palate it is round and rich, unlike some of the slightly 'green' 2004s I have had before, and there is reasonably good complexity and nuanced details evident. Elegance rather than power is the order of the day and the finish is long. This is a lovely example of this wine and ready for drinking now; it's surprisingly impressive for an ugly duckling year. It may not have the power of one of the great vintages, but it has all the elegance you could wish from a fine Burgundy. Not quite up to the standard of an earlier bottle, but still very good. Estimated maturity: 2013-2016

  • Had two bottles. First bottle was largely okay with a slightly rough/green finish -- possibly slight tainted, possibly not. Browning at the rim, very mature nose, excellent length but not great finish. Would rate 88. Second bottle was severely tainted with (likely) "ladybird/ladybug" taste -- harsh, green, dirty, almost chemical. Undrinkable.

There are calls for Rugiens-Bas to be promoted to a Grand Cru and on this showing one can see why. Estimated maturity: 2013-2018

  • Drank very nicely. No hint of the "green" aspect that many have found in the 04s.

  • Montille Tasting with Etienne Montille (Knightsbridge): Full red/purple color. big nose of candied red and black fruits with some hint of heat. Tight tannic black fruit on the palate. This was the most 'closed for business' of the reds.
