The nose has some truffle, smoked meats and black earth. The palate still has echoes of sweet red berry fruits. It is salty and fine, with a lacy texture and some tang to the finish. Flavours linger.

Resolved, subtle and understated, but very good with dark sweet spice notes perfectly balanced with dry red fruit, earth notes, and tea highlights. Nothing jumps out, but all is seamlessly integrated. A wine that requires attention. Great bottle. 95-96

EOHK. Floral, forest floor aromatics. Really clean palate with classic DRC sweetness. Man this is beautiful if a step behind 1971. Shocking yields in those days. (8552/30665)

Bob Mandeau's 60th Birthday. Excellent. Cannot believe how fresh the fruit was. Sappy crushed strawberries, some white pepper/spice. Tons of depth and concentration but danced across the palate effortlessly. It continued to evolve and was better 30 minutes in the glass. I am in love.

Unfortunately, this bottle was flawed. I bought this at auction and, although I have no proof, this could have been a fake. I took the risk and lost. The cork was about half the size of a normal DRC cork (not sure if DRC used the longer corks back in '64) and it appeared broken at the base but with no pieces in the bottle. Also, there was hardly any sediment.
Signature DRC spice, hint of autumn leaves mixed in. Nice sweetness on the palate and even sweeter 30 minutes in. Great overall length. Continued to evolve over the course of drinking it. This bottle was a little less fresh than the previous bottle tasted a few years back. Still superb.

50th Birthday Celebration Dinner with Wine (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Bottle was in good condition, good fill (~3.5 cm). Very earthy aromas, with some soy and Asian spice elements. Not much remaining fruit on either nose or palate, but there was a fundamental good level of concentration. Very enjoyable, just not as complex or long as I would have hoped.

Xmas eve with J and J at Les Amis (Les Amis, Singapore): Stunning wine even from a bottle with low levels (probably 6 cm ullage). Loved the sweetness, feel of harmony, very good length and the evolving nose - got some rose petals, some quite exotic spice. Another great Xmas eve experience.

This was the second tasting of this wine during harvest (right place, right time @ RN74). Clearly not in the same league as the first bottle and while I didn’t see the fill, the palate didn’t have the same energy nor did the nose have the same 1000 flower aromatic lift. Still, the balance was sublime with copious amounts of beautiful La Tache spice. Showing tired, on a downward slope and while the first bottle wasn’t on an upward, it was incredible more “fresh”. A great learning experience and as the saying goes, there are only great bottles, not great wines.

What I found immediately unique was the balance of the nose - explosive! While the ripeness of the vintage comes though in sweetness on the palate, it's seductive and lends itself beautifully to the wine. Power in the form of a a feather on the palate with impressive structure and push. Rich, with an expansive finish. The nose keeps luring me back as the spice unfolds. Awesome.

ERI Pre-Auction Tasting (The Adventurers Club - Chicago IL): Wine tasting. Bottle had a fill around 7.5 cm, was moved to the tasting location that morning, then double decanted. With that background, it would be easy to expect the wine to be awful. I got a very early pour/taste of this wine. Nose started amazingly fragrant in the classic LaTache manner, both floral and spicy. Mushrooms aromas were clearly present but in the background in a nicely complementary way. Flavors weren't quite as interesting as the nose, but had some lingering red fruit along with the more elegant aspects of sous bois character. Thirty minutes later the spice was mostly gone and earth flavors and smells were dominant. I hope I didn't make a mistake then buying the 4 bottles for sale in the auction, fortunately their fill levels were around 4-4.5 cm.

A Mid-1980's Tasting of Twenty One Vintages of La Tâche (1945-1980) (Private residence, San Francisco): Medium ruby. Spice and some light mustiness. Big for Burgundy, fat, lush, ripe, and lowish acidity. Exotic, chocolatey flavors, very sappy. Atypically heavy and almost clumsy to start, but this steadily loosened and improved all the way out to the 2 hour mark. A blockbuster, old style wine from a ripe vintage. Based on its evolution, it could still improve. An outlier that is extremely interesting.

2016 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly, Alan and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2016-11/12/2016 (Villa D’este, Lake Como, Piedmont, Milan and Frankfurt): Tertiary dominated nose, a hint of sweet dry dark fruit, soy, nutmeg and earth. Nice weight, a hint of dark fruit and soy, fully integrated acidity and tannins, and a medium long finish. It is a bit deep and dark, hoping for a bit more Vosne spice and brighter fruit expression.
