  • I liked this wine, but not as much as the first bottle several years ago. Double-decanted and consumed over two nights, the oak was way too present on night one, but on night two the wine was beautifully balanced and integrated. A softer style of Nebbiolo, it nevertheless had lots of aromatic complexity and a long, savory finish. Many, many years ahead of it, I wish I had more in the cellar.

  • Drank on the beach with truffle salami, cheese and crackers. Very nice on a cool afternoon. Lighter style Nebbiolo.

  • P&P. Medium(-$ ruby with bricking rim, fast-moving legs @13.5% abv. Medium(-) herbaceous aromas with earthy notes, licorice Dry, very high acidity, medium zinging tannins, medium alcohol and medium(-)-medium body. Medium palate of red cherries, red berries, mushroom and subtle wood/vanilla notes and loads of mineral. Focused finish with dry chalky finish. Austere palate with less complexity than I expected. A great food wine.

  • Classic light Nebbiolo color. Opened up after 35 minutes of air. Powerful aromatics, showing mint, basil, earth, red fruits; delicious flavors, good acid structure and clarity, firm but integrated tannins, with a great mineral undertone and longish mineral finish; plenty of subtlety here, great QPR, a good decade or more of peak drinking ahead.

  • Tough to keep my hands off of it. This really satisfies the Nebbiolo cravings. Elegant and generous at this young stage but clearly has a lot of room to develop further. Mostly primary at this stage. Very good value.

  • This producer never disappoints. While built to last this is incredibly juicy and more-ish today. Very mineral and long with a nice kick of tannins to remind you that it will only get better from here. 91++

  • A wine made from grapes sourced from three historical vineyards that showcase the best potential of Gattinara Nebbiolo. Macerated with the skins for 15 days. Aged first at least 30 months in old oak botti (with 20% of the wine spending 10 months in old and new barriques) and then minimum 8 months in bottles before release. Normally the wine is aged at least 4½ years before release. First vintage was 1997.

Almost identical to the regular Gattinara 2010 with luminous, pale garnet color; only the colorless rim extends a bit further into the core. Ripe, juicy and succulent nose with aromas of sweet cherry, smoky earth, some sweet dark berry characteristics, a little sweet oak, hints of dust and a faint streak of chocolate. Exhibits more oak characteristics and sweeter fruit than the regular Gattinara. In the mouth the wine is obviously more full-bodied, richer and more ripe than the regular Gattinara 2010 with flavors of ripe cherry, sour cherry, bitter spice, some sweet oak character, a little stony minerality and a hint of chocolate. Moderately grippy, firm tannins and rather high acidity. Grippy, almost coarse and quite long finish with lingering flavors of ripe cherry, stony minerality, some tart lingonberry brightness, hints of sweet oak and a touch of peppery spice.

A softer, richer and easier-to-approach expression of the regular Travaglini Gattinara - probably thanks partially to the warm vintage, partially to the bigger portion of wine aging in barriques. The wine has more heft and depth, but also more sweetness, more oak and riper fruit. I, myself, prefer the slightly more austere and structured expression of the regular Gattinara, but only by a very small margin - both of these wines are really lovely. I can see this wine drinking nicely after some cellaring, when the (albeit very little) oak characteristics integrate fully into the wine. A good buy at ~25€
