Wow this was good - good amount of fruit on the nose - took a while to coax out - some funk - lots of energy left. Drank w/ a ribeye and was perfect. Plenty of acidity and even decent tannins - long finish. All around quite nice for a somewhat humble wine w/ 17 years of age. It reminds me that Bordeaux shouldn’t be underestimate IMO…

Bricking is apparent. The nose is cedar box, tobacco and leather. The palate adds dried figs on the attack and powerful acidity on the finish, with completely dissolved tanins. Drink now!

We bought a fair amount of 2004 as touted as a good vintage to buy at a reasonable price that would drink younger while waiting for the bigger 2000s to awaken. I note the drink starting and drink by suggestions here and from other well known critics. Until we had the Fonbel Sunday with a steak we had found that every one required hours of decanting, and patience, and few really were rewarding. The Fonbel finally justified our response to the sales pitches for the 2004 and gave us some hope in this vintage. We enjoyed the wine. It wasn't just a question of talking wine tech- the bottom line is do we look across the table and say yeah, this is one we are happy to have and look forward to drinking and sharing.

Decanted for an hour then consumed over two. Definitely needs air as the initial nose and body were quite closed. Over time it opened to show leather, dirt/cellar, some cherry and other red fruits in a lovely balance. Not sure if the fruit will stay to balance the tannins over the long haul, but felt like it had a few years to go before peaking.

Great nose of red fruits and tar, leather and smoke. Taste is dry with medium body and beautiful acidity, velvet tannins and a really appealing core of fruit, as well as secondary tones of cedar, tobacco and choccolate. Well done!

Very dark color, oak, oak and oak. Typical good St Emilion. I don't think you need to decant. I know 2004 is not a good year but given the price - very very good. Soft and creamy finish with weak aftertaste. Cinnamon taste, quite pleasant. Excellent dinner wine.
