Classic claret. Secondary notes of cigar box and forest. Might need more time to show its full potential. Only concern is the slightly greenish notes on the palate. Still, a great wine. 94?

A very nice wine, pretty developed, still primary fruit notes, but overall velvety merlot driven wine with earthy black currants, some cloves and warm spices. i have my reservation when it comes to 2005 as a vintage, in Bordeaux in particular, but this wine stands nicely and drinks well. it is just that little hint of firmness that recalls some faint memories of other 2005s in a more reductive state.

Chocolaty, ripe dark fruit and coffee notes. Very fine structure on the palate. Dark ripe fruit balanced with soft tannins and mild acidity. Peak minus, perhaps and lacking a bit of depth but overall very enjoyable.

BBQ late Jun 2023: not decanted; tasted over 3 hours; dark Rubin color; intense bouquet of sour cherries plus red and dark berry aromas; on the palate like cherry juice, well-balanced by a mild fruit acidity; graceful texture; still strongly tannic in the cheeks.
In 2012 I tasted my last bottle of Gazin 2005 (see my CT note). Then the wine was still in adolescence and kind of restrained. Now 11 years later the wine has reached early maturity, nearly fully opened up and showed an excellent, almost outstanding quality level.
not sure about this - seemingly mature but lacking substance with a particularly hollow mid-palate - not unusual in wines of this age, hopefully it will fill in time - leave for a few years

90-91 Green notes, cigar ash (ashtray), subtle black plums, not much fruit left, subtle oak, savoury notes Delivers more on the palate than the nose Grainy tannins, searing acidity, has life ahead of it but without much fruit. I think this has now entered its prime drinking window

Very left bank style pomerol, you can get a full fueled power from the wine. Well blananced red, a little black fruits, coming with leather and vanilla, elegant but not full body, long finish, very good wine.

Nice bottle, but maybe a bit more monolithic than I was hoping. It was big, ripe, and really nice. Could have had more complexity overall to give it a better rating.
Gazin is one of my favorite “value” Pomerol wines. Unfortunately, this example seemed flawed. Rubbery off nose and simple fruit, slightly off flavor. This bottle doesn’t do the wine justice. Cork pulled 2 hours before tasting.
From Mark’s 2005 Bordeaux Vintage Tasting: Attended a 36 wine ‘05 Bordeaux tasting recently. The wine above is one of those wines. Served single-blind. All wines were tasted over a 2 day period, 18 per day. The wines served on the 1st day had their corks pulled two hours prior. The second day’s wines were served “ double-decanted”, 2 hours before the first flight. The overall tasting experience was quite different, as one would expect. Day 2 wines were softer, displaying more ripe fruit, and less harsh tannins. Kudos to Mark for both a fantastic experience as well as providing an instructive opportunity on how the 2005 Bordeaux vintage is showing at this stage.

Some divergence of opinions on where this is on its trajectory. After a 3-hour decant, my thoughts here: The gobs of fruit are adopting the flavors of mature bordeaux--with coffee, tar, and earth and even some dried florals and mushroom surpassing the still brimming but now salty-sweet berry, black cherry, tobacco, and chocolate elements--but the broad-shouldered, dense-but-cut structure still clamps down slightly on the finish and has plenty of melting still to do. So my guess is, assuming you enjoy the tertiary flavors of Bordeaux at plateau, and because this is stuffed with savory mid-palate fruit and has the texture to support it, it will benefit as the structure further softens and will soon enter its grandest phase, remaining there for another 15+ years. now-2035+

Dark purple wine, pretty opaque. Floral nose, a bit of spice, lots of dark fruit, some tobacco, then some brighter fruit too. So much going on! Gobs of fruit in the mouth, fine tannins, acidity in balance. This finishes long. What a lovely wine. Ready to drink now but can probably hold for a decade or more.
Tasted from a well-cellared bottle, this deep-to-opaque garnet wine (a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc) is just beginning to strut its stuff. Flaunting a core of black currants, dark bramble fruits, fig, baking spices, truffles and bittersweet chocolate, it is a full-bodied red with fresh acidity, well-woven alcohol, nicely integrated oak and abundant silky-textured tannins. Layered on the middle palate and finishing with impressive length, this is early in its drinking window. It may merit an even higher score in the future. Comparably cellared bottles should easily reach their 30th birthday. Drink now-2035.

Large and lovely. This is a well-rounded structured wine with a great core of fruit. It's still tight, but with a decant of a few hours it's probably great. I think it's just at the start of its drinking window, probably could last another 20 years. No idea if I'll find out!

Popped and poured. Dark purple core, pink rim. Pronounced notes of graphite, tobacco, dry soil and smoky oak over a dense blackcurrant core. Currently a little tight and acidic – needs more time. While I doubt we’ll ever see the level of quality required to justify the price tag, your best shot will be to let this wine sleep for at least another five years. Lots of sediment, so decanting is recommended regardless of whether you decide to drink it now or later (92-94 points).

Full, very modern styled nose of vanilla, bourbon-like oak, plum, tobacco and a nice iron minerality. Full palate with ripe polished tannins. Balanced but quite oaky. Ink, bourbon-like oak. Ripe, succulent dark fruit. Almost sweet impression. Mighty parts but in balance. Clearly in the modern, voluptous style. However given time in glass the wine calmed down and came a bit closer to a more classic style. So still upside on this.

Deep purple in colour Expressive bouquet of tobacco and truffle on the nose, a bit leathery at the start Full-bodied, strong and smooth tannin, high acidity A rather concentrated Pomerol, perhaps typical for 2005

Decanted for 3 hours. Deep purple color. Barely lightening up towards the rim. Still reticent but beautiful notes of black cherries, black currant, plum, truffle, underwood, also some cigar box, black cherries, also some oaky spiciness, but not overpowering. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful but with very good harmony and good medium-high acidity and still pretty high tannin. The tannin is clearly present (like in most 2005) but very good quality. Very long finish. Still a total baby in evolution but an excellent mix of Pomerol opulence and classic structure and elegance. This still needs a few more years in bottle but it has great potential.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #016: Bordeaux 2005 ... How does it show now? (By VD): Expressive bouquet with creamy red berries, tobacco, coffee and toast. Still a youthful bouquet. On the palate a firm start with juicy dark and red forest fruits, some metal, firm acidity and still quite sticky tannin. A bit rustic with also some slightly green impressions. The wine is still too young, but holds a promise. It was definitely the most concentrated, youthful and promising wine of the flight, but not the most smooth in this stage. 92 - 93++

Very dark purple. Blackcurrants and clove spice on the nose. Casis, plum and vanilla on the palate. Didn't have the softness of a typical pomerol but was very good regardless - more of a left bank lover's pomerol. Opened up after decanting and a rest. Still has a long life ahead of it - will improve.

Didn't take notes as was at a dinner- Dark black/red color - looked younger than an '05. Black plums, dried cherry, blackberry, coffee grinds on nose & palate - exquisite balance with medium body, medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins and long finish. Paired better with food. Very much enjoyed this. 92-93+ Just entering drinking window. Will buy some more current vintages.

Tasted during the World Congress of the Commanderie de Bordeaux and Fete de Fleur 2016. Medium purple. The oak here dominates the blue fruit both on the palate and in the nose. This is soft and pleasant to drink but just too oaky for a higher score. Was outshined by the other 2005 Pomerols served next to it.

A nice blend of anise, cigar. licorice, black fruit, and graphite. This is full on the palate but not quite fully resolved - I'd go another 5-8 years to allow further integration/mellowing. The potential for higher attainment is there.

2005 Right Banks, with an interloper from 2000 (Auckland, New Zealand): Dense and dark purple hue. A brilliant, tight, yet lifted nose. Touch of mocha, essence of black doris plums, tobacco and dried meats. Pinpoint fruit focus and a delineated finish. Bright acids and integrated oak - this is gorgeous winemaking. Very tannic but very juicy , this is so young and will take some time to approach its plateau of perfection, but this is superb wine. Great floral quality. The possibility of a touch of brett made no difference to my enthusiasm for this great wine.

Monthly Tuesday group #001: Pomerol (By me): 90% Merlot, 7% Cab. Sauvignon and 3% Cab. Franc. 35 years old vines. 50% new oak. Even though the wine was double decanted 6 hours before drinking, the bouquet was still locked. There were dark berries, some licorice and beautiful oak. On the palate a full bodied and concentrated wine with dark forest fruits, salty licorice, a firm dose of beautiful oak, good acidity and round but firm tannin. The wine did not extremely impress this evening because it is still much too young, but it definitely holds a promise. Wait at least until 2020. Will drink nicely until at least 2030 I guess, but I hope to have tasted the wine several times before that year. 92+++ for tonight.
Beautiful balance, concentration and length. Mouth coating smooth tannin with notes of plumb, iodine, ink, tobacco and plumb sauce. Decedent and rich. Silky and sexy. Fantastic.

Purple black color. Brooding and intense upon opening. This wine looked full bodied and viscous but was more medium body on the palate. That is one of the nuances of Bordeaux that I really enjoy. Decanted for 30 minutes. Aromatic bouquet of black currant and black cherry fruit. A smokiness with bittersweet dark chocolate flavours. Tannins still need some integration but they imparted sweetness as opposed to bitterness. Nice acidity made a perfect compliment to prime steak at Mortons. Long persistent finish. In 3-5 years this wine will be 94+. Highly Recommended and great QPR.

Hosanna Vertical Tasting (Zurich): WOTN...it left all the much more expensive Hosannas behind. In its current phase this wine is a tremendous Pomerol and can be still bought for relatively little money. Deep red still showing purple. Dark berries, cherries, coffee and chocolate. Tannins still present but very nicely integrated. Mixed forest berry jelly, Krisch liquor and coffee. Very elegant, complex and long in the finish. This wine is already approachable now but should last for another 15 - 20 years. Drink now - 2030.

Quite intense wine and maybe a bit to jammy for my taste and lacking some of the finesse of in comprising maybe the 2000. Still the palet had lots of plumb, earth and almost a bit of clay showing which was nice and well-made but it was still just a bit too hot and massive without the elegance possible so not the highest score from here.

Early Mar 2011: deep black purple color; restrained aromas/flavors of plum, cherry, spices and wood; satin-like on the palate, accompanied with strong tannic impressions; full body.

This wine was only opened tonight because I was out of all other wines. But happily it was amazingly good. I waited a year after the experience last year with this of undrinkably tannic wine. A year changes a lot. Now it is excellent if still young. But it can definitely be enjoyed now. We just dumped it roughly in the decanter then poured it after maybe 5-10 minutes. It was good right away but definitely got better with more air time. If I had another I would keep it longer. The difference is that last year I cellared it out of desperation, and now I would cellar it with confident high expectations.

Late Oct 2010: dark red color; restrained nose with little plum, red fruits and vanilla; satin-like on the palate; medium body; some edgy tannins; an almost dusty texture.
Five years of age, this wine is very restrained and much too young for early consumption. Keep it in the cellar another 5-10 years.
That same night a 2006 Gazin was served as well which showed significantly better (see tasting note).

Tannic and concentrated in its young age, not ready to drink as it is still quite backward. This is an 05' Pomerol to cellar. Shows tons of potential with a very classic Bordeaux nose of campfire, graphite, black cherries and cassis. This wine is very balanced and structured in the mouth with pure, big fruit, coffee and earth notes, and a pronounced minerality. Though very tight at this point, complexity and potential for improvement over time is not even a question at this point. This wine, though not showing much grace or opulence now will come around in a few years and will be outstanding for a long time. Point score is reflective of future potential. Hold.

Probably the only undrinkably tannic wine I have ever had, even with long decanting time, continuing to the next day. I regret the $80 spent on this. The 2004 was outstanding, delicious and ready to drink, full of power and flavor, and costing about half as much. I wonder if this will ever be drinkable, and I have one more. Ah yes, notes here say the drinking window (2013-...) is nowhere near open.

One of the best wines I have ever had, this 90% merlot Pomerol was absolutely incredible. Opened about two hours before tasting with only bottle breathing, this wine jumped out of the glass with a rich, supple core of fruit. In the mouth, the quality was instantly evident with ripe fruit and silky tannins followed by an intense lingering finish. I have not had many Bordeaux and even fewer from Pomerol, but this bottle sets the bar very high. For the price, I don't think it can be beat from 2005.

Inky black to deep purple to the rim. Clinging viscosity on the side of the glass with long and slow legs. Penetrating and clean aromas of dark fruit. Slightly floral, pure in bouquet. On the palette, mid to full body with good structure, balanced acidity and dark chocolate after taste. Fine tannins with very dry (but good) finish. I think this will last easily 20-30yrs in the cellar. Will be in its elements in 10yrs. 94pts.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2005 vintage tasting and dinner (Conrad Interntational, Singapore): UGC tasting. Bramble and earth nose, dry and tannic on the palate, slightly bitter almost, but with the really nice freshness that marks so many of the 2005s. Nice flavours with cherries, spice and chocolate. Almost an underlined red here. From bottle in Dusseldorf, this wine showed lovely cherry and plum aromas, despite a somewhat closed period. Darker color than usual – owner Nicolas de Bailliencourt explained that Michael Obert, new winemaking director, who used to work at Clos l’Eglise, has selected more carefully and called for later harvesting. He did not harvest in 2005, but was responsible for the vinification. Shows 13.5% alcohol, but nicely balanced and fresh. Very fine.

Deep purple in colour
Expressive bouquet of tobacco and truffle on the nose, a bit leathery at the start
Full-bodied, strong and smooth tannin, high acidity
A rather concentrated Pomerol, perhaps typical for 2005

Hold.

I have not had many Bordeaux and even fewer from Pomerol, but this bottle sets the bar very high. For the price, I don't think it can be beat from 2005.

He did not harvest in 2005, but was responsible for the vinification. Shows 13.5% alcohol, but nicely balanced and fresh. Very fine.
